Some people I know are calling this development a setback for LGBT representation... I don't think it's possible for me to keep calm anymore.

Considering the way he treats women in comparison to men I’d say that it’s clearly more of a problem on that front than the other.

Weirdly he would kinda qualify as offensive on that front if he also harassed men.

Since a stereotype for bisexuals is them being total absolute horndogs for both genders to the point of every sexual encounter always being at minimum a threesome.

Someone described how this could be good for Mineta's character if it was allowed to develop and show that Mineta's horrible interactions with his female classmates were a product of his internalized homophobia and trying to overcompensate to his attraction to Izuku.

On the one hand, yes, that would be good, and cool, and it would be really interesting to see in a manga in 2021.

On the other hand... the Eri thing. Still bad.

Uhm, isn't the "fell for you" a mistranslation?

I haven't really been there for this development, since I read fansubs earlier. Those didn't have Mineta word himself in such an overtly romantic fashion. Now, whether this is a genuine romantic feeling or not is one thing. I think it's just Mineta being dramatic (but I can absolutely see him worshipping Deku in such a fashion).

What this Twitter hooplah revealed to me is that apparently the only LGBT characters accepted by the fandom are conventionally attractive ones without big flaws (villains aside). Like... bad people can be LGBT too, can't they? Toga's blatantly bisexual, and nobody gives her raised eyebrows over it. Mineta's a creeper and a coward - but if he's bi, then he's bi, and that's the rub.

Guys, come on. Friends tell each other "now I fell in love with you", or even more explicit things, in a semi-ironic way all the time. Mineta, in particular, is a walking double-entendre. It's just a cute way for Mineta to say his "why I like Deku" part in a slightly unique voice, just like Tokoyami being funny-edgy in his choice of words.

Sometimes the Internet is like a lawyer looking through all the possible meaning of words in a dictionary so he can twist them to support his thesis.

>Uhm, isn't the "fell for you" a mistranslation?

Nope, the japanese uses similar wording. It *can* be platonic, but it's not common.

EDIT:

One explanation from twitter user Aitaikimochi, a reliable jp/en translator

another from twitter user redandblonde who does the weekly leak summary

[up]I mean, it's intentionally awkward wording on Horikoshi's part. So it could be intended that Mineta does actually have romantic interest, or not. But asking whether he really does have feelings is very much intended with that kind of phrasing. It's not weird to make such comments when that's very clearly the intended reaction of "wait what?"

Regardless this blowing up as it is is ridiculous.

For Gods sake its apparently trending #1 on Twitter.

These fans are such drama queens.

In any case, I loved this chapter, and Iida's reference to past instances where Deku did the very same thing the others are now doing to him.

I hope Bakugo and Uraraka get a moment now, though. Especially Uraraka.

Also, Bakugo's reference to "things he has to tell Deku" makes me think we might actually get the apology we're all waiting for.

Geez, though I myself said 'horeta' often is used romantically I'm pretty damn sure this time it was used platonically. And even if he did mean it romantically, so what?

In Japanese Twitter Iida trended in response to the chapter and here Mineta trends? And not even about the surprisingly wholesome things he says to Deku, I kinda feel sorry for the guy and that's a first.

Yeah, I like how Mineta, a person who has reasons to envy both Deku's power and his attitude, says "Screw the power, what I really admire about you is your attitude!".

To speak seriously, I think people are taking Mineta's "I've fallen for you" line too literally, even if he was using an actually affectionate tense in the Japanese version. Given the context, it pretty clearly wasn't an Anguished Declaration of Love and given that most of Mineta's characterization up to this point has literally been him being a sex pest, I think he admitting that was to show how serious the situation is.

I could swear I've seen the 'fallen for you' used in translations before, but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head. But yeah, this has been blown way out of proportion for a line that is basically just Mineta saying 'I love you, man.'

The thing is, 惚れる is, as far as I can remember, the least straight option Horikoshi could have gone with. There's 尊敬, 見上げる, 感じ入る, すごいと思う right there and Horikoshi didn't go for that. Even 憧れる, which also has undertones of attraction but is more the "I want to be like you" brand of admiration, was an option, but no, Horikoshi picked the gayest word available to him.

Wow, what an unusual circumstance. People ignoring context and interpreting something far too literally. First time I've encountered this, I must say.

Can't think of one.

[up]x3 Basically/tl;dr: The fandom overreacting to the idea of Mineta being LGBTQ+ rep thanks to a single line that isn't confirmed to be but is heavily leaning towards being romantic.
