PLEASE! I so want a continuity where they actually get somewhere!

Anyway, saw it yesterday, and had a blast!

Sonic is quite balanced character wise, with the charisma and ego expected of the character, but a realistic amount of hurt and bravado masking it due to his circumstances.

You really do want to hug the poor fella at several points.

Eggman is excellent. Not only Jim completely owns the scene, but he makes the character extremely fun to watch while undeniably showcasing why he is Sonic long standing nemesis. The dude is such a misanthropic scumbag, he cares about no one and relishes in it.

Tom and Maddie are really likeable, both as people and as a couple. It warms the heart to see how good natured Tom is, how much he is willing to do for Sonic and their bond really does develop nicely over the movie. And Maddie is understanding and supportive.

Also, their niece Jojo is adorable. They should have her interact with Tails in the sequel.

Also, I'm surprised at how much I liked Agent Stone. Wonder if we can get him back.

Stingers were both full of promise, and that intro makes me excited for Sonic's World.

Why are the Echidna after him? And for the love of god, bring back Longclaw in the sequel!

[up][up][up]Where'd you get that info? If true, then I fear a scenario that they'll introduce too many characters in one movie without giving them time to flesh out, something that befelled the pre-MCU Spider-Man film franchises.

I have an uncle who works for Nintendo see

Call it hunch or a gut feeling that they're saving romance for later movies now that they've established the characters

It's not actual information. He is just wmg/speculating.

It makes sense that Amy will be introduced at some point. And if the movies actually do want a romantic subplot, she is the most likely candidate.

I think the sequel will just focus on Sonic and Tails, and possibly the Echidna. Eggman could be what makes the two factions team off, or he could be saved for his great comeback down the line.

Sonic is very clearly a child in this movie. Pairing him up in this seems wrong.

Yeah, like I said when I first saw it, this movie does so many things right that other movies of its genre fail at. Sonic doesn't constantly annoy people, doesn't cause trouble, the main character is actually not a loser for once, and it doesn't rely on stupid jokes at the expense of story, and that's one of the big reasons for its success.

Thats why Amy would be the same age as Sonic, childhood crushes and all that.

This movie feels like a spiritual sequel to Sonic X.

Sonic gets trapped in the human world & forms a close bond with the first human he meets but instead of in X where he forms a brotherly relationship with a kid & helps him grow up, here Sonic forms a father/son relationship with a guy as he is the one who discovers growth this time.

Imagine a stinger for the next Sonic movie. A portal opens up in New York City. A coin drops out. Cut to black as a familiar jumping sound and a Yahoo! play out. “Mario will return in Sonic and Mario at the 2028 Olympic Games.”

Honestly the lack of romantic subplot is refreshing. They tend to be in a lot of things, even (and sometimes especially) stories that would be better off without one, so I'm really glad this movie kept the relationship drama minimal and made it more about Sonic and Tom's growing bond. And the characters were written in a way that you could care about them, and understand them.

I guess I'm trying to say I really liked that they kept the movie fun instead of making it too angsty, and they did a damn good job of making it fun.

They gave Sonic the usual live action adaptation cliches, but managed to do them that the main character is likable and so are the human characters.

[up] Agreed, the Human-Focused Adaptation was done better in Sonic X IMHO, but that was only because it had the other characters too.

All in all, it was a decent movie. Damn, was Jim Carrey good!

People are talking about a romantic subplot, but do you think that will actually happen? Amy's crush is infamously unrequited and I doubt Sega would just let Paramount get away with any real romance.

Alongside Tails, I reckon Amy, Knuckles, Metal Sonic, and possibly Longclaw will be introduced in the sequels.

And I think that'll be all of the new characters (besides maybe another Echidna to contrast Knuckles), to avoid bloating the cast too much. Even then, Metal Sonic doesn't need much introduction, considering its (presumed) lack of dialogue and it being an explicit creation of Dr. Eggman.

I actually liked the fact that Sonic was the main character and not Tom. I was actually worried that Tom was going to be the main character since this tends to happen a lot with movies that have a CGI character interacting with a human character.

For those of you who have already seen and enjoyed the movie, here's an interesting little essay on why it works as well as it does.

I was kinda annoyed at the obligatory fart joke, especially since the screening with the first design said there wasn't one. (What has the Lion King wrought? XD)

I heard that Knuckles is going to be in the sequel, which would make sense since this movie had the Echidna tribe featured at the beginning.

Given how well it's doing I wouldn't be surprised if there is a sequel. Plus they clearly set one up.
