Funny thing. As of this post, while the servers are officially shut down, I can see that some players are still online even 45 minutes after shut down by just not jumping out. From what I hear, this is what happened when Halo 2's multiplayer servers shut down.

But I'm guessing the map rotation schedule is what's going to shut it down for real.

AFTER THE FACT EDIT: Well, turns out I was wrong. Map rotation is still going, even if everyone who wasn't online when the server shut down can never play again.

I finally beat side order although I had to do a hacks run of it leaving me with just 6 chip slots, but hey its done

Does the first game have a list of stats you can look up based on each online match?

What kind of statistics? (Not that it matters much anymore since the servers are dead)

Like Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, it had a version of SplatNet that kept track of that information, but it was shut down back in September 2017.

Coming back to Splatoon 1 at the end of an era reminded me why I found playing Chargers tough and Blasters being fun but hard to use.

I never played the first one. In fact, when I got the second one, I was confused cause I never heard of 1.

The Wii U was really a dark period for Nintendo, wasn't it. So many bad decisions that could have gone into its design and marketing, and they made most of them. It would have been a lot worse if they hadn't had the 3DS to fall back on

I do like how Splatoon 1 implemented the GamePad. It's basically the only Wii U game aside from the Zeldas to use it for something that isn't just off-screen play, and to do it well. But even then, Splatoon 2 and 3 showed it could work without

But to keep this thread on topic, there's a homebrew application called Pretendo that replicates Nintendo Network functionality, including MiiVerse. I won't link to anything here because the mods consider any homebrew to be piracy, regardless of whether it not any unauthorised distribution of copyrighted material is going on (and in the case of Pretendo, there isn't). But, you know, it's possible to keep playing S1 if you don't mind starting from scratch.

If I recall, there was a thing where you no longer need to mod your console. Wont link to it for similar reasons, but I saw an article about the devs having had that work around in their back pocket for just such an occasion.

Yup, you just need to use the Wii U's browser to navigate to a website and switch the DNS, all done in browser. That approach is a bit limited compared to homebrew, but is easier and doesn't require hacking your console.

In other news, I just realised the Controller VM is a Virtual Boy.

I'm doing surprisingly well right now. I got 5 consecutive wins in Salmon Run (as Eggsecutive VP), and I also tried my hand at Splat Zones Series, and after one disconnect that counted as a loss, I got 4 wins in a row!

I've said before and I'll say it again until it's actually done, but the Stamp needed a nerf the moment it was added to the game.

what issues do you have with the stamp?

Ultra Stamp? It's daunting sometimes, but it's a melee attack you stay vulnerable while using and it's complete ass at doing almost anything that isn't moving directly forward, so I feel like it falls off at higher levels. It's kind of a skill gate special

hey, what's the best thing to prioritize for 8's palette? Hacks (and low slots) or slots (and no hacks)

Hacks cause low slots? I never knew there was a downside to them?

I'd say that enough hacks will more than offset the limited slots in terms of difficulty, but more slots was more fun. Though I refused to not have at least one extra life hack for that one.

There's a badge if you manage to complete a run with four or less hacks on Eight's palette.

My problem is having low "armor broken jump". I got so used to being catapulted away from damage that I keep just standing there while these stupid fish beat me to death

I've consistently seen one extra life as a necessity (it can genuinely make or break the run if you get a spot of bad luck) and the other three slots are preference, but I've seen Defense Up, Pearl Drone features, and access to rerolls as common picks as well.
