Another thought about the retro block on Adult Swim, do you think they'll show banned eps like Buffalo Gals, Gnomey, or Barbequer?

[up][up][up] They've been including "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey" on Netflix and HBO Max and the like so it's not impossible.

Unfortunately I wish I could say the same for the other two. (I saw "Barbequor" back when CN had an Internet video site. That was the last time I ever saw it legally available.)

Whenever I see fanart of Over the garden characters crossing over with characters from Gravity falls I get reminded of how Over The Garden wall could have been as popular as Gravity Falls, which is kind of is but what I really wish is for full series instead of a mini series

Thank god there's decent comics based on the show at least at least

I wonder, did Cartoon Network help end the Animation Age Ghetto? If so, how?

It didn't. Channel solely for kid-friendly cartoons being most known representative of cartoons add to assumption.

[up] Ironically early on it really did. Cartoon Network in its early years was famous for adults watching it.

JANE! STOP THIS CRAZY THING!

With all this new programming, you might think there wouldn't be a place in the market for a 35-year-old, crudely animated cartoon about stone-age suburbanites. But when a 5-year-old tunes in The Flintstones, he has no idea it's a rerun—and he's probably never seen The Honeymooners, so he doesn't know what he's missing.

Thus Turner's Cartoon Network has been able to challenge Nickelodeon, in markets where they compete, with little more than reruns of Warner Bros. cartoons and Hanna-Barbera classics like Scooby Doo and The Jetsons done up in snazzy packaging. Since its launch in 1992, the Cartoon Network has become one of the fastest-growing basic cable networks, reaching some 80 million homes in more than 80 countries. "We sell the cartoon spirit, its zaniness," says Betty Cohen, the network's president. "That way we appeal to the kid in everyone, even the adult market, which is crazy for cartoons."

She's not kidding. One of the Cartoon Network's top-rated shows, for example, is Scooby Doo, the 27-year-old series about a dog and four teenagers tooling around in their groovy RV and solving crimes. Of Scooby's viewers, 68% are kids 2 to 11; the adult component is 25%. That's right: 25%. Adults. Watching a show about a crime-solving Great Dane. Why?

"From 1969 to 1991, Scooby was never out of production," explains Fred Seibert, Hanna-Barbera's president. "You have 22 years of audiences with fresh Scooby Doo episodes in their minds. All those people are now at the age where they have enough time, enough memory, and enough money to capture the parts of their lives they enjoyed the most." Worldwide, more than 35% of the network's audience is adults, something that isn't lost on advertisers: Besides such kids' staples as Nestle and Procter & Gamble, Max Factor is buying time on the Cartoon Network.

The Cartoon Network doesn't yet have the reach of Nickelodeon—at this stage Nick is on nearly every cable system, which puts it into 70% of America's homes, as opposed to the Cartoon Network's 31%. On the other hand, the Cartoon Network occasionally has higher ratings in markets where the two compete directly, and it is the only other network devoted to children's programming full-time. Furthermore, it's picking up cable systems at a rapid clip: So far this year it has added 325. As the Cartoon Network expands its reach, Nick may be facing the most serious challenge yet to its supremacy in the kids' kingdom.

You forgot to link the article. But yeah, while CN would settle into becoming a kids channel by the mid-2000s, the channel was pitched to advertisers and the like with the idea that both adults and kids would be watching, and [adult swim] pretty much exists because at least a third of their audience at the time were adults, even as they were shifting to family-friendly original programming. And [as] expanding over the years is in direct response to how much of CN's viewership is older audiences. [as] isn't going to start at 6pm starting August just for the fun of it: 70% of the people watching CN at the time are 18+ as it is, so it's an ad sales move.

I know I've already talked about something like this on other threads but did you know Justice League had 44 minute episodes much like the average live action TV drama? (Though they were two-parters that were released a week apart)

Personally, I'd love to see Cartoon Network experiment with this format again, but with an original series and every episode being a single piece. (Of course they may have already done so with Adventure Time: Distant Lands)

anyone else here have zero clue what "Whatever Happened to... Robot Jones?" is? I say this because I kept hearing about the show for years but I can't recall a single time where I saw it advatised or watched an episode

I think it was their answer to My Life as a Teenage Robot because they seem to have a very similar premises

No. It started out as a Big Pick short in 2000, when Teenage Robot was just one short on Oh Yeah! Cartoons, and was greenlit and canceled before Teenage Robot even premiered.

(I think it was the second-most-popular short of the original Big Pick bunch, which explains why it became a series. Still, it was never as popular as the winner that year...)

...Not really? Yeah, they both have teenage robot protagonists, but that's about it. My Life as a Teenage Robot was very much a Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World superhero show, while Robot Jones is a Slice of Life school comedy. The Life and Times of Juniper Lee vs. American Dragon: Jake Long this is not.

As for why you probably never watched it back in the day, Cartoon Network pretty much buried it during its second season. I remember needing to stay up pretty damn late to watch new episodes. But it was worth it for that sweet, sweet guitar.

What about the Lavender Fudge Experience's classic "The Nudist and Mr. Pendleton" (with design work by the late, great Paul Coker)?

Robot Jones just had fantastic vibes all around. The art style and music are what caught my attention as a kid, and I still enjoy it now because of stuff like [up]. Though it feeling like some strange, time-displaced enigma from the 70s is probably a factor in why it got the axe.

People don't really compare Robot Jones to My Life As A Teenage Robot unless they are just putting them together as two works with robot protagonists.

Robotboy, a mid-late 00's CN show was the show being directly compared to Teenage Robot because they both focused on blue robots who are trying to assimilate in society while fighting bad guys ate the same time.

I remember seeing a bit of Robot Jones when it was on the air and being surprised that it was new at the time, given the retro art style.

Brian A Miller announced on his Twitter that the CNS building is being closed and the staff is being moved to the WB animation building. Make of that what you will.

We've known that CNS is effectively now an imprint of WBA and leaving the old building for months. Both of them are moving into a new building, with the current WBA location being closed as well, IIRC.

Some news on the Pibby show:

TL;DR, WB extended the trademark.

Also, they are indeed moving CN and WB into one new building.
