Uhhhh... Hey folks? The Kickstarter currently has 7,516 backers and has also raised $883,312 as I write this...

Yeah, there's no way it's not hitting two million before the end of the week. I'm willing to wager we actually make it to the 12 episode stretch goal well before Thanksgiving.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

And I feel like saying that MST 3 K without the bits you like "isn't really MST 3 K" is...well, that hurt. I'm super-excited to have Joel back, and to see him steering the show in a new direction, and I like to think that if it were Mike at the helm I wouldn't be claiming this new version is fake somehow. The show is different things to different people and I think it's important to respect that.
Oh, I respect your opinion. You are free to like the things you like and I won't begrudge you (unless you like, I don't know, racism or something). I just feel like without the main writer (and two of the main stars), the show isn't really the show. I mean, after Amy Sherman-Palladino left Gilmore Girls, that show was never as good.

There's also the fact that, objectively, MST 3 K ended. It came to a close. And this is a new show with the same name...but with completely different people writing for it (aside from Joel). It would be like comparing the old Battlestar Galactica to the new Battlestar Galactica - they are similar, but fundamentally different shows to me. Does that make sense?

Well it could reach it's goal before Thanksgiving, or maybe before the month is over. We'll just have to wait and see. Maybe the next day of the campaign, It might be well above $1,000,000 funded.

[up][up]I doubt Joel is gonna be the only member of the old show in the writer's room. He's explicitly said that there's an open invitation for anyone who was involved to return to the writer's room and to cameo in the new program as their original characters. Trace Beaulieu and J. Elvis Weinstein are basically guaranteed to return, given that. And I feel like Riff Trax's new ability to sell MST 3 K episodes on their site is supposed to be a sign of some sort.

So less BSG, more [Beverley Hills] 90210 or Dallas or Degrassi or Boy/Girl Meets World.

[up]I think the basic point stands, though, that we are both pretty optimistic that this Kickstarter will end with at least Experiments 1101, 1102, and 1103 getting made.

If Trace returns, I'll give it a shot, but...didn't Josh Weinstein leave after two seasons? I don't know why he would return.

I bet Netflix will pick the show up. Or maybe Shout! Factory's free streaming service Shout! Factory TV.

[up][up]He came back for Cinematic Titanic and did the voice of Tom Servo during last year's Turkey Day marathon.

Honestly, he's improved a lot since he was 17.

(Similarly, Beaulieu did both Titanic and Turkey Day as well and worked with Joel on Other Space earlier this year. Plus, judging by social media, they're still really close. I feel like he's a shoe-in.)

[up]Shout! pulled all their stuff from Netflix a bit back and has since been putting MST on Hulu and You Tube. I suspect that's the route the new series will go as well.

EDIT: Trace and Frank are touring and riffing movies together now. These people basically never stopped hanging out. I suspect the only reason Hodgson is being coy about who's returning is that there's still scheduling or budgetary issues to work out, and not because anyone's actually said no or because Hodgson hasn't reached out.

Let's be honest: would you agree to be a part of this before the Kickstarter ended? You'd be carving out time in your life for a project that might not even be happening and would therefore not be paying you anything. Once we know, for a fact, episodes are being made, the Best Brain veterans will start climbing on board. I'm sure of it.

Well, it seems that Joel might be the only original cast member participating in the reboot, given that Josh, Trace, Mike, Kevin, and Bill all said they wouldn't be involved. (Apparently Frank and Mary Jo denied their involvement as well.)

Wow. I'm genuinely surprised.

Ah well. Joel has a good eye for talent, as evidenced by the fact that these guys got involved in the first place. I'm sure the new guys are gonna be great.

Also, looks like we broke a million! Woot!

Joel posted an update for KS backers. And one bit is relevant to the discussion here:

Question #2: What about everyone else? Are the other MST 3 K writers and actors coming back?

This is the hardest question to answer, because there are several moving pieces involved.

Right now, I don't know who will agree to come back and work on the next season of MST 3 K… but if the Kickstarter is successful, everyone will be invited to take part.

Until yesterday, I wasn't even sure this whole Kickstarter idea would work. I've reached out and spoken with some of the old cast and writers, but until I knew how much money we'd have to work with – and when we'd start writing and shooting – there was just no way to make the specific offers that I hope will bring many of them back.

Plus – as many of you know – so far, the old cast haven't been compensated as well as they (or I) might have liked. I wish I could go back and fix that, but if I'm going to ask them to participate in the next season, I want to be certain we can pay them what they deserve this time. As soon as we pass our initial goal of $2,000,000, I'm hoping to start making the invitations official, and I hope some of them will be able to join us before we start working in January.

But there's another thing I should say here: As much as I love the old seasons, we're not just trying to make an "MST 3 K reunion episode." Even if we do get our entire old cast and staff to come help out, I think it's important – essential– that we bring in new talent to keep the show fresh, and to help it evolve.

To do that, it's important that we bring in the next Host, the next Mad, and the next robot voices. And if everything goes well, there'll be a dozen more after them. (I'll come back to this in the next question.)

At the same time, I'd love to work with the entire old team again. Mystery Science Theater 3000 became the show you know and love because our writers and actors were – and are – some of the smartest, funniest people I've ever worked with. If they have time to come back for the next season, I'll be so excited to work with them again.

But even if everyone comes back, we'll never be able to reproduce the magic of how those old episodes feel to you. No one ever could. People usually think that the “best year in music” was they year they turned eighteen. In the same way, the “best year of MST 3 K" – for you – will probably always be the year you turned 13, or 16, or 18, and your parents finally sprung for the good cable package. To misquote Rick James, nostalgia is a helluva drug. We can't compete with your memories, and it would be kind of silly to try.

But we can try to make something that today's kids (and adults!) can discover, that will give them the same feeling you once had. And hopefully give you long-time fans something new to enjoy, too. That's the goal, anyway.

No, I mean, I knew the reason why no one had signed on yet was because whether the project is actually happening and how much the old folks could be paid was still up in the air.

Another kickstarter update. Joel answered a few questions. To summarize the new info:

  • There will be singing. In fact, one of Joel's prerequisite for the role of the new host, and the new voices of Tom Servo and Crow, is that they have to be able to sing better than he can, "which is pretty easy to do."
  • What wasn't directly stated, but implied by how he worded the previous point: it seems Joel has already cast the new host, Tom Servo, and Crow. EDIT: I see now that this was already stated outright, elsewhere.
  • Joel does intend to keep the show "family-friendly" (or at worst, a soft PG-13) like it was before.
  • As much as Joel loves Minneapolis, it just isn't practical to do any filming there. They'll be shooting the new season in Los Angeles.
  • Yes, they're going to do an online Turkey Day Marathon this year. And they're going to revive the tradition of reading fanmail on-air.

As for the new cast: supposedly, an article in Entertainment Weekly states that the new host and the bots will be played by Jonah Ray, Baron Vaughn, and Hampton Yount, while Felicia Day is in talks to play the Mad.

[up][up]Do they specify which is which? I'd totally be down for Baron Vaughn hosting.

Also, a link to the article would be great.

[up] From what I've gathered: Ray - the host, Yount - Crow, Vaughn - Servo.

As for the link: apparently the article is for now available in the print edition only.
