Pandemic special streaming this weekend

It has a new short as well as the current cast riffing over a season one episode.

Note that "current cast" is the cast for the recently concluded touring live show, not the Netflix series.

Yeah, I did not realize until I got the newsletter about it that the touring cast isn't the Netflix cast. They were in the first tour, right?

Well, there's our female host.

I watched the archived stream on Youtube and a few times they addressed someone called G.P.C. and I was confused. But then at the end Joel addressed G.P.C. and the feed cut to her and I realized they actually did it. They heard fans saying the purple dinosaur robot's name is a slur against the Rromani ethnicity and they changed a name that's stood for 30 years. I didn't think they'd do it, even if it did come to their attention.

Oh God, you should have been there, when it was live. Fans freaked in the chats just because of the name change.

Joel will be riffing two new shorts for a fundraiser with J. Elvis Weinstein as Tom Servo, and Bill Corbett as Crow this Friday, 10/30.

I think Metlix host wasn't given enough of a shot.

Jonah? He'll probably be back if the show proper gets picked up by somebody, but he's too busy to do charity streams and live shows.

Netflix in particular has a bad habit of cancelling shows after two or three seasons because the metric they care about isn't "viewers" but "new subscriptions". And debuts drive those more than renewals. I think it was One Day At Time that recently got cancelled by Netflix and picked up by a broadcast network.

Joel sent out an email to the previous Kickstarter backers that a new MST3K Kickstarter begins tomorrow!

And it's live! It's already up to $1 million.

Edited to add: They will make up to 12 new episodes which will stream on their own new subscription site The Gizmoplex, rather than relying on a network/other streaming service. The final goal is $5.5 million, which at this rate they'll reach in a day or two.

The PR material has Jonah, Kinga, and Son of TV's Frank, so I presume they will all be returning.

Backed! I'm stoked. I feel like the new crew finally hit their stride with The Gauntlet, so they deserve the chance to keep going.

It's now at 1.5M. Looks like they'll reach the 2M starting goal pretty easily. The ultimate 5.5M goal doesn't even seem implausible at this rate.

Initial goal met in just over 24 hours. I think they'll make the $5.5 million final goal easily.

Went ahead and pledged. Can't wait for the new season.

The upper-tier rewards on entertainment crowdfund campaigns always seem like a joke (and it's possible some of them were quietly pledged for by producers and their family members anyway, at least that's been the case with the few campaigns I saw the backend of).

I wanna be able to drop $20k on a Kickstarter for a show and select the "you get a bluray and maybe an enamel pin" reward and see if anybody contacts me like "was there some mistake? Did you not want us to be your personal jesters at your beck and call, oh feudal lord?" No, I want you to make the thing and let me put it on my shelf and never talk to me, like Tchaikovsky and his patron.

Part of me was hoping one of the rewards would be a Crow replica, and potentially explain why Crow replicas have been unavailable on Etsy for over a year (since the guy who makes them has worked with Joel before).

I hope they can use the extra money to get the rights back to the Netflix episodes.

I thought the Netflix episodes were always non-exclusive. They were able to include a Joel episode in a Turkey Day or something without any problems.

Huh, so it seems like Jonah, Kinga, Max and the rest will be returning in the new season. I don't mind this, since I enjoyed these characters, but I was kinda hoping for a new MST3K host, to be honest (maybe Matt Claude Van Damme would've sufficed). I guess they didn't want fans to have a similar reaction to when Mike Nelson replaced Joel Robinson as the host of MST3K.

Anyway, I wonder what movies are gonna be covered this season? I'm guessing stuff like Night of Horror (or perhaps the remake Curse of the Cannibal Confederates; I hope Jonah and the Bots don't fall asleep from boredom in that one) and Rock: It's Your Decision (I bet it would be funny to hear the Bots' reactions to Jeff's "discoveries" about why rock music is "evil").

If Jonah were to have been replaced, I would have been okay with Emily Marsh from the recent live shows.

Am glad Felicia Day is coming back. I did not like the actress that filled in for her during 2020 live shows.

Despite being my favorite actor tied to the reboot, I'd be... pretty dang okay with losing Mac. Patton Oswalt is a treat and I appreciate how The Gauntlet cut down on how he was solely defined by lusting after Kinga but... ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Take it as praising by faint damnation but Max has easily been the worst part of the revival seasons to me, and given he's probably the biggest star attached to the show I really would be okay to drop him moving forward.

My main issue with Max is, sure he's supposed to be the son of Frank, but... Does he really need to be made up to look like Frank Conniff?

Back before the revival premiered I mention in a forum it'd be funny if in the first episode, they revealed he's wearing a wig. Was very disappointed that didn't happen.
