Or she could be an amorphous ball of light, or a bunch of wings shielding something that will blind you if you see it, or just a random old traveller delivering a message, or...

Angels are divine emissaries. The rest is variable. [lol]

One word: lap-dance.

[up][up] My objection is still 'has no arms or listed manner of hiding the fact they are wings'. And no other method for fine manipulation.

I would consider Raineh's criticism a million times more valid.

Oh, but I guess everything is invalid because Anno used the secret magic spell word that wins all arguments.

I'm sorry, it doesn't matter who you are, but when "seduction via mind control" is part of a character's powerset it is creepy and it is wrong. There is a lot of difference between "impressing someone" and "basically singing to drug them". Mind control is creepy and awful at best and this is even worse.

Even without that, what about characters without strong wills? There are some who are submissive or shy or any number of other things like that. As the character's powers are laid out, there is no way for such characters to resist her.

And I'm honestly very offended about the accusation you've made. Just because I find objectionable elements in your characters does not mean I'm part of some conspiracy against you. It's the same for everyone else who has voiced their concerns. People can dislike something and protest against it without being part of some "clan" made to attack it.

... Saturn, if you've had the same people object to your character on the exact same grounds in the same RP, might it be, perhaps, because both characters have a similar theme linked to them, and that really squicks those people? It's not even as if there's any great search for reasons. Last one was mysteriously pregnant after demons; this one has seductive mind control. :/

I'm again officially recommending (with the official standing that I possess, which is little to none) that we leave off on this discussion and let daltar see what she thinks.

Yeah, I'm calling a ceasefire.

Disclaimer: Naturally, Daltar is the GM and therefore has final say, and considering that I haven't yet posted in the RP, I don't feel entirely reasonable commenting on this, but I'd just like to add a couple things.

Personally, I'm completely fine with the character. In fact, I'm in favor, since it will potentially make conflicts more interesting than hinging on brute force. It's pretty obvious that P Cs will be immune if they feel like it and NP Cs of any importance will just happen to be "strong-willed" or have "magical interference " or whatever whenever the circumstances require it. Having experience with reasonable people playing characters with mind-control powers previously, I can attest that it's a thing that can work perfectly well without causing problems.

Besides which, seduction does not always need to end in sex. Seduction itself is merely the act of manipulation based upon physical attraction. There are many, many more applications of seduction and manipulation than sex.

As for wings, well... maybe she's got talons at the end? Who knows. It can be resolved or worked around, in any case. With regard to hiding the appearance of being a Harpy, however, that's something everyone can do, remember? It's a function of normal humans not processing supernatural things properly, which is sometimes enhanced by glamours and the like.

...And I see I was ninja'd many times over. Oops.

I would agree with you Raineh, accepted that the fact remains that majority of people didn't actually have a problem with either character, and didn't link them to rape.

I will also post my support for the harpy idea, on darksidevoid's points - we are all reasonable people here, and presumably we can trust each other to exercise good taste and restraint in our storylines and character interactions. No one's character is going to be forced into anything; that's godmodding before anything else.

Going by the number of people involved in the discussion, it's actually roughly 50%.

Either way, mind control + seduction = Unfortunate Implications.

Trust in good taste is what allows Vlad to not use his powers of stealth and transformation to commit rape, and you guys didn't call out Arr'kree's potential to make roofies—not even potential, that's probably something that changes hands regularly among his coworkers.

  • Name: Avery Jacqueline Pierce (Ghosts are named Jacques Gusto and Al D'Alessio)
  • Age: Avery is 21. Jacques would be hitting his 70s now and Al over 100.
  • Gender: Avery is female. Al and Jacques are both male.
  • Religion: Ignorant and Apathetic.
  • Race: Human. Sorta. I mean, both the ghosts were humans so I guess human works.
  • Appearance: A tall tanned woman who carries herself with an air of class and intelligence. Well, prior to the Possession. Now she tends to carry herself with a more intimidating stance. Her formerly green eyes and blond hair are now red and white, respectively. Tends to wear clothing that allows for ease of movement.
  • Personality: Avery's personality is one of a tired, worn out person far too young to be worn out. She tends to be very exasberrated and easily annoyed, but wouldn't respond in any way except passive aggressive snipes. That or the complete crushing of her annoyance. Al is basically a worm of a person; talking big but usually the first to flee a fight if it isn't going his way. Jacques is quiet and calm but has a thing about giving your all in a fight and gets a bit too hammy in those kinds of situations. All in all, a very disfunctional person.
  • Bio: Oh boy this'll be fun.
    • Avery: Avery Jacqueline Pierce is the daughter of an Irish immigrant and Southern belle. Both her parents spent a lot of time working in low-level labour jobs so their small family of three did not enjoy an affluent lifestyle. Avery ended up befriending some pretty rich and powerful folk. Her being somewhat striking probably helped but she had a razor wit and quick thinking that made her popular amongst them. Of course, rich people are evil because reasons and turns out her friends ended up getting into cults during college. Getting pressured into joining by PEER PRESSURE, poor Avery ends up getting tricked into becoming a "sacrifice" to summon ghosts. Turns out the translator of the Cults for Dummies guide they were using didn't dot his i's and cross his t's and instead of sacrificing her, they bound the spirits to her. Now neither she nor the spirits were particularly happy about this and those kids are now vegetation at their families houses without any clues because cults ain't something you do a whole load of talking about.
    • Jacques: Jacques "L'Ouragan" Gusto was born into an entirely French family of middling economic standing. It was a rather large family so Jacques grew up surrounded by brothers and sisters both older and younger than him. However, he was far taller and better built than the rest of his family. He later learned that this was because his mother actually had an affair with a younger man when her husband was away. In any case, Jacques found that he wasn't particularly talented at many things aside from causing greivous harm to others and acting. As a result, he ended up in amateur wrestling. Unfortunately, due to some minor miscommunication and potential insults about someone's father, Jacques tried to get a little too real and got the shit kicked out of him for the trouble. After almost being written off for dead due to spending almost a week unconcious, he woke up with an angry man yelling at him to do some pretty bad shit. However, the trauma he sustained in the injury was really bad and he would later die proper a few days later.
    • Al: Al D'Alessio was born to a recently immigrated family of Italians after coming to the United States of 'Murica. Being recent immigrants in early 1900s America is... not great, so they had a hard time sustaining their family. As a result, the family got mixed up with some rather suspicious characters aka the Mafiya. Due to being brought up around these kinds of folks, Al took a shine to the criminal life. He was no head honcho but he was a part of a rather brutal squad that collected protection money. However, in a particularly nasty stand-off with an almost inhumanly strong bartender, Al ended up fleeing the scene screaming like a little girl when one of his squadmates was torn limb from limb. Not that he saw that; when the bartender picked up Jimmy, that was Al's signal that sticking around probably wouldn't be worth it. Of course, the mob don't take kindly to deserters so Al ended up on the run. Even with threats towards his family arising, Al didn't want to take any chances and actually became scarily competent at living on the lamb. However, after his family was wiped out and the mob finally cornered him, they sent him to sleep with the fishes. But Al wouldn't be done that easily. Through sheer passive aggressive pissiness, Al stopped his soul from departing the Earth. Wandering aimlessly without anything to connect with, he eventually stumbled upon Jacques and accidentally forged a soul bond with him due to sharing a similar anger for the (unknown to them at the time of their screw-ups) unnatural.
  • Skills:
    • You Don't Fool Me!: Avery, due to having a spirit bond with the ghosts sharing her body, is capable of seeing through Glamours despite being human. She is also able to get slight alternate viewpoints by getting one of the ghosts to leave her body temporarily. The view can only last for 10 seconds at a time and the vantage point can't be more than 10 feet from her.
    • Shut Up!: By channelling the ghosts' anger, Avery can shout incredibly loudly and threateningly. It won't deafen anyone or anything but the voice is filled with pure anger and hatred, so not a lot of people or things will want to keep talking when she gives them the command to shuddup a their face.
    • L'Ouragan Commence!: Avery taps into Jacques's strength and experience to go ham on poor suckers. Allows her to utilize fighting techniques, specifically wrestling-based ones, with a high level of skill and more force than she appears to have.
    • Ya Gonna Sleep with da Fishies, Capiche?: Avery taps into Al's experience to wield a Tommy Gun and a baseball bat like a force of nature. Also passes on brass knuckle and revolver use but far less than the other two as they were Al's specialty.
  • Possessions and Assets: Avery lives by herself in a rather low-rent apartment and owns little to her name but her clothes, a baseball bat, a Tommy Gun, and an almost completely broken down 1965 Ford Thunderbird.

On Saturn's character, if properly plated I see her more as a seductress, certainly not as a rapist. As for the wings, maybe have them in addition to the arms rather than instead? That way they can be easily concealed through a combination of glamour and appropriate clothing, loose robes, binding if necessary. As long as the mind control is resistable, i have no problem. It becomes a matter of roleplaying and individual player choice as to whether and how much to give in.
