It really didn't matter, though. Chrysalis's subterfuge fell off, yes, but it was long after she'd reached a point in love draining that she was more powerful than Celestia. I repeat, more powerful than Celestia. Couple that with the fact that her army couldn't be matched at all Canterlot's population and the Changelings were completely untouchable. Stealth was completely unnecessary because they win entirely through sheer force. The only reason they lost at the end is because Chrysalis dumbly watched Cadance undo her—an action that could have been completely stuffed by a single kick.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshix4 she has no reason to do it right from the start. It is only later does the original become a liability and when you have an angry unicorn at your disposal why not see if she can be made angry enough to flat out murder someone. She won't have to get her hands dirty and it keeps the one person that nearly discovered her plans out of her hair.
"When I offered to make Norea my third back-up girlfriend she just glared at me and started throwing things at me.." Renee CostaIf I call to mind unerringly, Chrysalis was not conscious of being puissant enough to vanquish Celestia until she absolutely had to fight Celestia. She was, after all, quite surprised that she could defeat Celestia, as evidenced by both her face when she did and her dialogue.
Exhibit A: This picture.◊
Exhibit B: This dialogue.
Chrysalis: "Ah! Shining Armor's love for you is even stronger than I thought! Consuming it has made me even more powerful than Celestia!"
But what part of her plan does keeping Cadence alive in the first place serve? Cadence was a liability from the moment Chrysalis abducted her.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. While it was silly for Chrysalis to allow Cadance to power up Shining Armor, she never would have been in that situation in the first place if she hadn't pointlessly allowed Twilight to rescue her.
The only way for Twilight to piece together what was happening and expose her was by finding Cadance, who was currently in a hole in the ground that Twilight would never have any reason to discover on her own. By delivering Twilight to her, Chrysalis made defeating herself possible.
EDIT: Besides, just standing there gawking is something all the villains do. Nightmare Moon, Discord, Tirek, etc. You name a villain and they've stood there gawking while the heroes power up whatever their finishing move is.
Deliberately undermining their own plan for no reason is unique and special to Chrysalis.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.She's surprised, yes, but it still doesn't matter. She was too powerful to be overcome except by stupidity. Yes, she lucked into it in a way because she did make what would have been a tactical error if it wasn't already completely too late.
You mean the completely hopeless situation that happened because she was so invincible that no amount of what would normally be a mistake could touch her? Yeah. The only reason she lost was because she threw harder than a salty MOBA player. She was entirely safe on that first play. There was room for malicious gloating. The second was the equivalent of simply laying down and dying.
And just because other villains gawk like idiots, it doesn't invalidate my point.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiPersonally I see it as largely a characterization thing. Chrysalis is sufficiently petty that she'd want to screw with Twilight just for the sake of it.
It also ties in with another bit of headcanon regarding why Twilight is the only one to notice the switch: Chrysalis replaced Cadance quite a bit before the episodes actually happened. When she first made the switch, she did a good job of imitating Cadance so that no one noticed. Problem is, she's evil and extremely petty and selfish, and Cadance is practically her opposite personality-wise. She can only keep up the charade for so long. So as it wears on and the wedding gets closer and closer, her imitation of Cadance starts to slip, but nobody notices because they attribute it to wedding stress. By the time the episode actually happens, Chrysalis is probably seething with the effort of trying to maintain the pretense and barely holding herself together. When Twilight comes dangerously close to wrecking her whole plan, Chrysalis is so pissy about the whole thing that she abducts Twilight even though there's no real need to (or alternately because she's afraid that Twilight might not let the issue go; she doesn't know Twilight well enough to say otherwise); her pettiness overcomes her better judgment.
Reaction Image RepositoryChrysalis wouldn't exactly have many options for killing her available since I assume she probably captured her by catching her by surprise. Which depending on when she replaced Cadence which I assume was probably during wedding planning she has to act immediately in her new role which probably only leaves time to sump Cadence in a spot where people won't be looking for a while considering there is a wedding and a threat against the kingdom she probably had made to ensure everyone was to distracted to notice anything out of the ordinary.
So again she takes the first available opportunity to try and have her killed with Twilight. Considering it probably took a while for Cadence to be in such a condition and probably took a while for Chrysalis to be as powerful as she was feeding off of the love of the couple. Once the wedding was over and my assumption is she was not going to reveal herself under normal circumstances. Having the real Cadence around when the entire city is not wrapped up in a royal wedding or under complete lockdown is a liability. Having her around before then because your busy with the other steps of the plan and busy keeping a city's focus diverted is less of a problem when you probably don't have the resources to deal with at that time.
Since I doubt a regular grunt of her species can kill Cadence. Easier to bet on an enraged unicorn apprentice of the powerful princess to be able to potentially pull it off then waste grunts trying to do it.
I get the feeling Chrysalis was not looking to fight Celestia in open combat at that point. Being more powerful than she expected is probably the only part that was not her plan since the army being near the elements and weakening the shield enough for the swarm to invade was well executed. I think she was caught up in her victory she didn't think anything could go wrong and miscalculated how dangerous cadence can be if not dealt with. A mistake she corrects in her second invasion.

"When I offered to make Norea my third back-up girlfriend she just glared at me and started throwing things at me.." Renee Costa...you're suggesting that Chrysalis successfully managed to capture, transport, and imprison Cadance without ever overpowering her?
Like, even if she knocked out Cadance by surprise, that would still result in Cadance being rendered vulnerable. The idea that she somehow got Cadance into that cave and kept her there without Cadance ever becoming susceptible to harm at any point is...it'd take a lot of explaining.
Chrysalis didn't kill Cadance because that's now how characters do things in this series. Killing being verboten is an unspoken absolute. It doesn't really need explaining because it's just a given that nobody is a killer. Even Tirek, the Generic Doomsday Villain who just wants to kill everyone and burn everything, never explicitly harms anybody beyond taking their magic.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.It wouldn't be that difficult.
- Chrysalis as Shining: "Hi, honey. Come check out this thing with me!"
- Cadance: "Okay!"
- Chrysalis: *Takes her to the mines.* Surprise, I'm a monster and now you're trapped here forever, sucker! Bye!"
- Cadance: "Oh, no!"
The only thing keeping Twilight and Cadance from escaping were three inept guards. I feel like Cadance at full alicorn power could have dealt with that.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Now to be fair they really wanted to be bridesmaids.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeThat's what vampiring on her love for Shining is for.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiNobody was feeding on her love for Shining Armor. Chrysalis was feeding on Shining Armor's love for her.
There's a much simpler explanation here. The simple explanation is that they beat her up, dumped her in a cave, and posted guards to keep watch.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Not really sure of the exact details because there are a lot of details left unknown that would be important factors.
Which came first the threat or the swap? When exactly the swap occurred? Did Chrysalis immediately get into the role of Cadence when Cadence was captured? Where was Cadence when she was captured?
Don't believe the show went into details in any of these things. Of course that is the out if show reason. People are discussing the in universe reasons for actions which is a different thing entirely.
I am at most saying she probably didn't have a straight up fight with Cadence and probably had an ambush ready depending on where it happened.
"When I offered to make Norea my third back-up girlfriend she just glared at me and started throwing things at me.." Renee CostaShe could have fed on Cadance while misleading her. Then, after stealing Cadance's identity, swapped to feeding on Shining. When there's a buffet, might as well indulge.
Beating her up and leaving her to die in despair does sound in character for Chrysalis, though.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiAnother reason to keep Cadance alive is in case she needs to be interrogated for details to maintain Chrysie's cover.

"When I offered to make Norea my third back-up girlfriend she just glared at me and started throwing things at me.." Renee CostaNah, we'd know if he was a Skrull or Changeling if he didn't post weird shit all the time.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeIt's a reference to Clue, which is a great movie, but has absolutely nothing to do with anything anyone was talking about.

I've seen Clue, but I missed the reference. And yes, the constant nonsense is and always has been annoying.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayCool. I won't post on here for the next two seasons.
Bye.
Well, she was obviously mtovated by spite and frustration that Twilight had almost unmasked her, but there's also the fact that Chrysalis has to consider that even if she accepted Twilight's apology, Twilight might find the final piece of evidence to uncover the truth and prove the story to Celestia.
By duping her underground, she thinks that either:
1. Twilight will be stuck there until the invasion is complete.
2. Twilight will kill the real Cadance and believe that she has saved her brother, meaning that she will be taken by surprise by the invasion
3. Twilight will kill Cadance and be so horrified by what she has done that she cannot muster the ability to warn the others.
