I honestly never paid attention to how many episodes there were, I just watched them as they came out...

Well, atleast not all the episodes are going to have songs in them. Felt like Season 4 had one nearly every episode.

Season 4 did have quite a few songs. Wonder if this is going to be a one-song-an-episode deal like s1 and s2, or if we'll get another Musical Episode.

[up][up][up] The issue with that, is it utterly destroys the story. It ruins it being it's own things. it's own creation. Utterly breaks the immersion and the whole.. feeling of it.

once you resort to "It's the way it was written." That writer has utterly failed at storytelling to me. If there is no other plausible, in universe reason for it. Then you have totally failed.

then again, I do prefer everything to be 100% Watsonian.

[up] Well, we do know at least one ep has a tony award winning Broadway actress/singer doing voice work. So looking forward to those songs.

@JT: What the writers have done is completely irrelevant. The writers are capable of believing they made a mistake and that they've created an inconsistency without it being an inconsistency. An inconsistency does not mean that the writers made a mistake or that they have no explanation for it. An inconsistency doesn't mean that there is no explanation. It means that an explanation is literally impossible.

EDIT: [up]This.

I wouldn't go THAT far, as in utterly and totally impossible. I'd stop at highly implausible.

Such as a character's whole behavior and characterization randomly altering. Or the entire town turning into utter assholes out of nowhere. Stuff like that. it's not impossible but it is incredibly implausible.

No. In my case, utterly and completely impossible, no matter what you try. Otherwise it's not an inconsistency.

Writers make mistakes, but the setting doesn't. If that is what is written, it finds a way to work.

See, here's the problem:

No. In my case, utterly and completely impossible, no matter what you try. Otherwise it's not an inconsistency.

Writers make mistakes, but the setting doesn't. If that is what is written, it finds a way to work.

Not everybody accepts this premise.

Yeah on the whole.. I'm with Sereg, but dude, that's a tad to extreme even for me.

Now you're getting into Tautological Templar territory.

No, I'm not. That would be if I claimed that the setting is consistent because I said it is. Instead, I'm saying that the setting is consistent because there are no points that are incapable of existing together. If you proved otherwise, I'd clearly be wrong. You are the one who is saying that the setting is inconsistent entirely because you say so.

EDIT:[up]I can be a very extreme person.

I have actually understated my viewpoints on this. I believe in a kind of ... "will of the setting". (Though that is just a poetic description. Obviously I don't believe that settings are sapient or sentient or alive) If the writer makes a mistake, it was the will of the setting to be different from what they originally planned.

@Seraphim and others: Points taken. I see the logic in what they did now.

This premise actually really hooked me in to the show again. Through most of season 4, I actually felt kind of disenthused, but I'm feeling the hype for future episodes in this season.

See there ARE points that are so... off.. that the only explanation for them is a Doyalist one.

okay, one non-writer based one. unicorns magic changing color between seasons one and two. All of them sans Twi having the same aura. To each one having a unique aura that generally matches their eyes and/or cutie mark. Sure, it's possible that the very laws of the universe altered and caused this to happen. But it's highly, highly improbable. To the point, there really isn't any other realistic explanation.

Or a more to the point one. Spike turning into an utter moron, who can't even wash a single plate without ripping out part of a sinks plumbing. Are there possible reasons. maybe brain damage that got fixed at some point. Somepony cumpped stupid pills in the water? Sure. But none of them are plausible.

@Sereg: Yeah, I think the thing is that different people have different threshholds as to what, exactly, constitutes an "inconsistency". Yours is just a particularly extreme one.

Mine is more along the line that Seraphem used at the top of the page, i.e. is there a plausible in-universe explanation. That is, if the amount of Fan Wank required for the explanation is too high, I'm not going to buy it. The other thing is that I don't think that pure logical consistency is all there is to it. The explanation, even if it's logical in the technical sense, still needs to match up with the established tone of the work and the established characterizations of those involved.

Seraphem's "unicorn magic changing color" is a good example. Sure, I'm sure if you thought about it long enough, you could come up with an explanation of Celestia or Twilight mucking around with magic, but there's zero plausible reason for why they would be doing that.

You mean an official move that isn't humans? I'm surprised and cautiously optimistic.

Hey, why don't we talk about something completely not the current subject?

Like how Spike really shouldn't be announcing his plans to sweet talk something of Big Mac's into his hot little claws.

Okay. For that, I'm saying that's not a change in the verse, but an improvement in our ability to "see" it. Cameras got upgraded, basically. Something like an art upgrade is just a change in our ablity to view the universe rather than a change in the universe itself. Just like the universe doesn't change between stories in the show vs. stories in the comics.

I didn't like that, but I can't call it inconsistent. (Best explanation I've heard is that he was poisoned by timberwolves) I have to just say that Spike was acting very unusually for some reason.

And yes, I'm strict with my definitions. As far as I'm concerned, it preserves meaning.

I like to imagine that AJ told Mac about it before they left, and he ended up putting Spike through the ringer over it.
