When it comes to this show, suddenly everyone is an expert in everything, be it writing, worldbuilding, PTSD, romance, military, criminal activities, alcoholism...

I'm not sure if it is just me, but I feel like RWBY draws such a ridiculous amount of nonsensical criticism, it's insane. Just...why?

There are worse shows than this. Way, way worse.

People also appear to forget how this show even started. The barely-there budget. The 2-5 minute chapters. The V As, who consisted of RT's own staff.

This show has its flaws. It has to have them. It's natural. It's not any worse than any other show. It's not more or less flawed.

Honestly, I think Miles and Kerry deserve a lot more credit for the work they've done, especially considering what they had to work with, in the beginning.

This show deserves so much more positivity.

  • Note:**Just so ya'll are aware, it wasn't a post in this sub that triggered me writing this.

(...)

I'm not saying criticism isn't allowed. But what breeds the negativity surrounding this show – especially on Youtube and Twitter – isn't constructive criticism conveyed with basic human decency. It's criticism like this (behold my favourite quote of one of Youtube's professional RWBY critics):

"Two women, that's hot! Swapping crotch snot and taking a sip from that furry cup!"

I'm not gonna post names or channels. You either know or don't know who said that.

What I want to say is, now that I've cooled off some: feel free to criticise things you don't like. Feel free to make a 5-hour video about it, if you feel inclined to do so. However, for the love of God, 1. don't be a dick about it and 2. if you have to be a dick about it, then don't insult actual, genuine critics by calling yourself a critic.

Criticism should be meaningful and helpful. It shouldn't insult the creators of the work being criticised. It shouldn't tear someone down. That's not and willnever be criticism.

[up] Careful, you might be considered a flagrant RWBY apologist quoting such a radical post like that.

I've got nothing on that phenomenon. At some point it became hip to talk smack about the show (I would wager somewhere between Volumes 4 and 5), and the algorithms ensured that the topic would persist in public consciousness for way longer than it should have ever been. It's like some memes randomly become a flavor of the month and then disappear into the void, stretched over a course of a few (several?) years.

That reddit post is pure, unfiltered gold. Some people seem to exist solely to complain about things, to throw around hate and you just want to go, "If you hate it so much, why do you keep watching it?" because at a certain point you have to wonder.

Though we know the reason: Because being super-negative gets them clicks and views, and makes them feel important.

RWBY isn't a perfect show, but holy shit it has certainly grown so much over the years. I'm someone that literally started out with hearing "the dude from Dead Fantasy is making a show!" and waiting with excitement for each Trailer to drop. Watching everyone involved in the series grow and develop has been incredible, seeing these inexperienced folks that have been pouring all their passion into something and becoming consistently better each volume has been a wild ride.

It isn't some show that keeps airing, season after season, just to make the money for as long as possible. You can tell it's a passion project, that people have put a lot into and really care about. And for all its flaws, there's something special about a project where you can feel how much the people working on it actually care about it.

I've got nothing on that phenomenon. At some point it became hip to talk smack about the show (I would wager somewhere between Volumes 4 and 5), and the algorithms ensured that the topic would persist in public consciousness for way longer than it should have ever been.

It was earlier than that. Let me tell you about my introduction to both RWBY and Rooster Teeth.

I had never heard of Monty, RWBY or Rooster Teeth until I was told by someone I was debating Bleach: Fade to Black with to watch the Red Trailer. Why? We were debating small girls wielding big scythes in anime. I dislike it, hence the challenge to watch the Red Trailer.

Anyway, the pilot episode was already out, so I watched all four trailers and the first episode together and decided to nose around the fandom to see what people were saying.

From the trailers alone some of the hate that was flowing included anti-Monty, anti-RT, hating the Black and Yellow voice acting, etc.

In those first few weeks (the first four or so episodes), I was exposed to people capslocking and exclamation pointing the creators with vitriol — it certainly wasn't criticism — accusing them of all sorts of things from betraying the fans (advertising a fighting show and not delivering), having a second team (JNPR) when the show was called RWBY, accusing Miles of ruining the show with his self-insert (Jaune). They went after the animation, the voice acting, the scripts, the episode lengths, the slice-of-life, lack of fights, etc. By the time the show hit the Jaune mini-arc, this self-insert vitriol had reached fever pitch, and Miles was constantly being attacked.

It left scars. Miles didn't like writing Jaune scenes for years and left it to Kerry because of the backlash. Planned character growth arcs for the other characters were shelved because of the backlash over Jaune's. Kerry has said several times that if Miles had been given a self-insert in the show, the character would have been more like Roman because the closest to a self-insert character for Miles was Felix from Red vs Blue.

That was my introduction to this fandom. It took me a while to realise that this wasn't the whole fandom, but that it was a hatedom magnet from the outset, a show where people start following it solely to rant about it and insult people just for enjoying it. And, like most hatedoms, it was so loud and visible that it eclipsed the rest of the fandom.

It is entirely possible to discuss legitimate criticism of this show, people do that all the time and there are legitimate critics for this show. But critics and haters are not the same thing. There's not a lot you can do once a show has attracted a hatedom, beyond ignoring it and avoiding the flash zones. That is, however, easy for me to say because I'm not a RT employee, and therefore I am not the target of that hate.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

So...Im remembering that theory that there were actually 4 gods?

And that theory the original dragon God was the Mesoamerican dragon?

Well....

https://youtu.be/dfupAlon_8k

In Aztec beliefs apparently there was originally one God who popped out 4 gods

And there were multiple Humanities, with each apocalypse happening because the Dark god was a petty Dick

The 2 'Animal' gods from fairy tales were both real. With them being the other 2 Gods. Faunas being there Counterpart to humanity.

I became familiar with RWBY after I stumbled upon the TV Tropes page for that series.

Also, for The Reveal entries on the work page, not every single entry has to have spoiler material and I think they may need to be rewritten to expose more outside of the spoiler tags.

...why? We've gone from sixteen weeks to 21... that's not a huge difference. By now the non-subscribers would have just seen the finale, and even a month from now, when we have seen the finale, we wouldn't have been chomping at the bit for V9 just yet.

I imagine they mean the wait in addition to how the plot is progressing. In other Volumes we've typically seen multiple locations or moved a significant amount away from where the volume started.

At least that's how I feel. It's different, and we know it was going to be different because they spelled it out for us that this Volume would take place over 2 days.

But this Volume feels different externally too because we've never had a midseason break before, and that wasn't because of the snowstorm.

Yeah with the break and that Mini-Break we took. It just feels like we've been in this volume for awhile. So it'll feel odd when it's finally all over.

I do wonder how the Volume will look looking back on it all.

Honestly? I think we're at RWBY's storytelling peak.

We're in the 2nd to 3rd season of Lost, the first seasons of Twin Peaks and Heroes, the 2nd to 3rd season of The 100, and the third and fourth seasons of Battlestar Galactica and Farscape. The second seasons of Arrow and Flash.

We're at the point where most of the exposition/setup pays off (Salem, Hazel, Emerald), where our strongest characters develop into their ultimate form (Ironwood) allegiances and the lines between protagonist and antagonist are shaky (Ironwood, Hazel, Winter), internal and external conflict are totally balanced (Ruby v Yang), and the main villain has shown off their ability to menace the heroes.

Which is why I hope Theodore ends up being the Kamina or the Superman of RWBY because if we have to leave Atlas in better shape than they found it, it's going to be a bit of a let down when the stakes have gotten so high.

Oh oh, I got more exanples.

Vol 8 is RWBY's Return of the King phase.

We're in Season 2 of Once Upon A Time!

You know I would Kill for RWBY to referance once upon a time in space atleast once

If you don't know it's a concept album, and the Other Science Fantasy setting who's charachters are meant to allude to fairy tales

They aren't too simmular in terms of actual plot and especially tone(Think of it as the Warhammer to RWB Ys star wars) but there's enough that bringing up the comparison is fun

The fact they had there Cinderella allusion('Cinders') be someone madly in love with the charachter Rose Red was so hilarious to me listening as a RWBY fan too.

I still claim pointing out that that shipping chart is volumes out of date :p

We're at... the third and fourth seasons of Battlestar Galactica

Not saying that I necessarily disagree, but goddamn do I know some people who would swear a plague upon your house for this statement. Although most everyone agrees the New Caprica arc is basically the greatest thing ever filmed, at least. I could watch Exodus on loop for a week without food, sleep, or a bathroom break and still hit an ever higher state of euphoria every time the Adama Maneuver happens.

[up]Unpopular opinion but volume 3 is bloody overrated. Everyone loves it for it's second half but never mention that the first half was pretty mediocre. Even if I was judging volume 3 by it's second half only, I still don't think it is RWBY at it's best.
