Another thing I've come to notice: people do not always indent supertrope-subtrope, they simply indent tropes they think are related, but are not in fact part of the same hierarchy. Like this:

These two tropes are not related and do not fit in the same hierarchy. It makes no logical sense other than somebody wanting to squeeze in another bullet, instead of just, you know, using a pothole.

I'd really like an exception to be made for aggregate tropes like Five-Man Band (which you specifically use as an example of what not to do). That's the kind of thing I was thinking of this entire time, actually. That's not so much supertrope/subtrope as it is one big trope that happens to have bluelinks under it. If that makes sense.

Five-Man Band is a team dynamic, not just 5 tropes mashed together. That makes me reticent at approving such subbulletage there.

About the administrivia edit: Are we sure that we need specific examples? I'd say that something akin to "Subtropes don't go into subbullets. In fact, if the example fits the subtrope, the supertrope isn't necessary." is conciser.

Illustrations make the point completely clear in a way that mere exposition does not.

[up][up] Five-Man Band is a single example of a trope, not five (or six) subtropes. The tropes that make up the 5MB exist independently of the composite trope.

I still think it's way too long can easily be summarized as Tropes in a list are not subbullets.

Double-post: I have updated Example Indentation In Trope Lists. Is that sufficiently clear?

It seems pretty clear, although I think it might undermine the "This is a widely accepted standard" notice at the bottom.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

I thought of that. It's an Eddie-ism, so it's hard to place anywhere else in the page and still have the proper effect. Suggestions welcome.

Would it work as a separate page? That would keep Example Indentation focused on indentation for multiple examples of the same trope.

I would rather keep all information on * usage on that page, and find a short way of saying "Subbullets are not for subtropes"

Why would that supertrope/subtrope notice undermine the note? A note in the middle of the article just looks weird.

Well, the "accepted style standard" note doesn't apply to the subtrope-supertrope thing. However, to address the other question raised above, the article is Example Indentation, and this is explicitly a case of example indentation. There's nowhere else for it to go.

The widely accepted standard for indented lists is that there should not be a single subpoint on a level. If there's only one subpoint, it should be incorporated into the main point.

Remember learning to do outlines in grade school? Same thing.
