I've got this pet theory that the Mad Max movies aren't actually sequels to each other. Rather, they're the same story re-told many times, the legend changing as it's passed down from generation to generation in this post-apocalyptic society.

IIRC that's pretty much George Miller's actual Word of God explanation for the inconsistencies between the various movies. Though his version is that each film is a different legend rather than a new version of the same legend.

Though I'd qualify that what was said sounds more like an interpretation rather than a theory. The distinction being important here.

If you assume that thing that all four movies are variations on the same wasteland myth of Mad Max, you could also scramble that Corpus Colossus and Rictus Erectus (the stunted dwarf and huge but dimwitted sons of Immortan, respectively) are variations on Master-Blaster from Beyond the Thunderdome, with Immortan himself being a variation on Toecutter (hence them sharing an actor) or vice-versa. The War Boys also echo the Feral Kids from the same movie.

While I'm here, may as well mention that I cleaned up our page for the series as a whole: Film.Mad Max

It always bothered me how the page was more of a list of each film with a fuckhuge paragraph summarizing its plot than an overview of the franchise
