German WW2 bomb leaves giant crater in field

“It was not immediately clear what caused a blast so powerful that it registered as a minor earthquake.

The blast, at 03:52 (01:52 GMT) on Sunday, startled residents near the central German town of Limburg, leaving a crater 10m (33ft) wide and four metres deep in a field.

A photo taken by a drone later revealed the impact of the night-time explosion. Initially police said "no definitive indication" had been found of a suspected unexploded bomb.

But, on close inspection of the corn field in Ahlbach, bomb disposal experts decided it was "with almost absolute certainty" a World War Two bomb. They believed it was a 250kg (550lb) bomb dropped by a plane.”

Old news a month ago, but Singaporean military EOD teams were called in to Geylang to determine if an uncovered explosive was safe.

A third-party company specialized in removing unsafe materials was called in to assist.

Because you people like this stuff. No news as to the size of it but homes within a 200m radius have been evacuated.

Which is fine by me because if it was say 500m or so I'd be packing a bag right now.

A white phosphourus bomb dropped from a B-24 ignited in Taiwan after being exposed to high temperatures.

- An unexploded American-made phosphorous bomb from WWII suddenly ignited on Tuesday afternoon (July 16) in a residential backyard New Taipei City.

At 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon a man discovered a rusty object had begun to burst into flames on a slope in his backyard near Huweipaotai Park (the remains of a fortress) on Zhongzheng Road in New Taipei City's Tamsui District, reported SETN. When the man realized it was an unexploded bomb, he immediately dialed 119.

When police arrived on the scene, they cordoned off an area of 90 meters around the bomb, evacuated 14 people living the area, and notified the Army bomb disposal unit. Specialists then extinguished the fire and removed the bomb from the scene by 9 p.m., before destroying it in a secure location.

Tung Yueh-lung, a military officer at the scene, as saying that the unexploded ordnance had been probably been exposed by recent heavy rains and the subsequent high temperatures may have caused the WWII weapon to ignite.

Tung said that ordnance was a white phosphorous bomb left over from WWII that was 90 centimeters in length and had a blast radius of 90 meters. The officer said that white phosphorous can spontaneously ignite when the ambient temperature reaches 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The bomb found in New Taipei was likely dropped by an American bomber during a massive raid launched on greater Taipei during WWII. The raid, known as the Taihoku Air Raid, took place on May 31, 1945 and was part of the largest allied air raid on Japanese-occupied Taipei (then known as Taihoku) during WWII.

The raid consisted of 117 Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from the U.S. Fifth Air Force and lasted from 10 a.m. until around 1 p.m. During the air raid, American bombers dropped approximately 3,800 bombs on military units and government facilities, and despite efforts to avoid civilian casualties, some civilian facilities were mistakenly struck.

Over 3,000 died as a result of the massive bombing raid, more than all the casualties from the previous raids in Taiwan combined.

In the city I live right next to, two guys were cooking a WW2 hand grenade on a gas stove yesterday. They thought it was defused and harmless because the guy they bought it from said so.

Turns out it wasn't.

Explosion knocked down a wall and damaged a gas line, but the firefighters managed to seal it in time. No fire, two light injuries, no fatalities. 108 people were evacuated from the apartment building but have since returned to their homes. Police found a very large collection of WW2 ordinance and weaponry in the apartment; the duo were making memorial items from them. Said collection is currently being examined by ordinance experts and bomb squads to make sure they really are defused.

The guy they bought the live grenade from has been arrested by a commando unit this morning, his house is being raided while the interrogation is underway.

[up] Wait, why would you put a grenade on a stove in the first place, disarmed or not?

I have no idea. All the article said is that they were heating the grenade on the stove.

A collector in the UK unearthed mustard gas canisters is going to be serving jail time after he, his wife, and a friend dumped the chem weapons into a local lake.

Martyn Tasker, 40, his wife Michaela, 32, and their friend Stuart Holmes, 51, had previously admitted possessing a chemical weapon after disposing of 16 gas canisters in Stixwould Lake, Lincolnshire, in October 2017.

Bump after over a year, since the current war in Ukraine is naturally generating a flood of unexploded ordnance over there. Photo of ordnance collected from Hostomel:

Construction in northern Hungary found quite a cache in a backyard, all of it of WW2 German origin:

  • 240 pieces of 75mm fragmentation and 30mm rifle grenades, weighing nearly 700 kilograms in total
  • 25 kilograms of bomb debris
  • 3 kilograms of gunpowder

It took EOD nearly two days to find it all with metal detectors. All of it's been shipped to the military's central storage for later disposal.

There's also the family of American tourists who just this week found an unexploded shell and decided to keep it as a souvenir. (D'oh!) And brought it with them to the airport. (D'oh!!!)

In Israel.

(Mind-boggling levels of "D'oh!!!"-ness.)

Some chickenshit idiot in Hungary found two "bomb-like" rusted objects and brought them home with intent to sell them as scrap.

His aunt alerted the authorities, who determined that the objects were WW2-era Czech high-ex artillery rounds. Both were live and could've leveled the house if they had gone off.

A WW2-era 122mm Soviet artillery shell was unearthed in southern Hungary earlier this week. It was only a smoke shell and was missing a fuse, but EOD intervention was still needed due to its 4 kg white phosphorus payload that already begun smoking merely from being exposed to the air.
