I just realized that Yozakura is just two chapters away from outliving Samurai 8. That's cool. surprised

Also, is it me or there's an awful lot of comedies among the latest series?

Might help with the current situation? If the year sucks, release comedies.

They're probably trying hard to get some gag manga to stick around since there isn't any established one right now.

Still, they shouldn't push too hard in one direction… I mean, when was the last time the Jump launched a bonafide feelgood fantasy adventure series with a cool universe to explore?

…Oh right. That was Samurai 8. Hum. Unless Undead Unluck counts as one?

I’ve actually thought that as well.

All the current series are just kinda urban fantasies, more or less taking place in the modern day with city settings. No crazy worlds or anything like that.

Actually the only fantasy series we have that doesn’t take place in an urban setting is Black Clover & where that show takes place is just a bog standard Medieval Europe.

I imagine the isekai craze might have killed most traditional fantasy?

Agravity Boys has an interplanetary sci-fi setting where the protagonist are human, but Earth and the rest of humanity have been destroyed.

@alekos: The fact editors are equating "fantasy" with the heavily watered down shit the Isekais pump out on a rate that could be measured in nanoseconds is already a bad thing in itself.

Guardian of the Witch was trying to do the big, exciting fantasy world thing. It just, you know, wasn't very good at it.

Ah yeah, there was that too. Also, Golem Hearts a couple years ago, which was terrible. Uhm, yeah, it's apparently not that easy to do right. tongue

In other news, Tokyo Shinobi Squad is getting a French release in September. For some reason.

As far as I can tell, Jump currently has a decent amount of female co-protagonists or outright leads, but it seems there's more of a deficit with action-oriented series. Even female leads that face perilous situations, like Emma from The Promised Neverland, tend more toward Action Survivor (which isn't a bad thing, writing-wise, on an individual level).

Does or has Jump had an action-oriented female character (even one outside of an action series) that is unambiguously the lead character?

So a direct action series/battle manga that actually stars a female protagonist willing to get down and dirty in dragged out bloody brawls like the rest of her male contemporary's?

........ I havn't read it but Medaka Box is the only thing that comes to mind.

I actually noticed Medaka in that previously linked cover compilation. Her and Lala were practically the only girls appearing multiple times before the last montage (i.e. pre-2013), though Chitoge wasn't far behind.

[up][up][up]Claymore, yo. Main character and nigh all the fighters of consequence were women.

[up][up][up][up]Wouldn't be such an issue if they didn't keep using up good names. Guardian of the Witch? Golem Hearts? Shit sounds dope.

Claymore was only in WSJ temporarily between its monthly magazines.

And if we're gonna count all 'jump' magazines, that would probably expand it a lot.

Claymore was only in WSJ temporarily between its monthly magazines.
Specifically for about half a year.

Still, I didn’t know it was from any Jump imprint, much less spent some time in Weekly.

Honestly, most Japanese takes at "traditional" i.e. "Western" fantasy are deeply coloured by the fact that they were chiefly introduced to Japan by Record of Lodoss War, so a certain gamey element snuck in there. I get the impression that the vast majority of Western style fantasy works Japanese people consume are either video games such as Dragon Quest, or incredibly influenced by those video games. And I feel that fantasy works like Claymore or Berserk or hell even Seven Deadly Sins that break away from that mostly are in a MASSIVE minority since then.

I feel like including Part 6 of JoJo again as an example of Action Girls as protagonists in WSJ. It remains the only example in the 8 parts of the manga, though - and it shall stay like this, since the manga is in Young Jump now.

Now that I think of it, Stone Ocean was actually the last Part to be fully serialized in Shonen Jump...

[up] Ultra Jump not Young Jump. Young Jump is a weekly manga, home of Kingdom and Kaguya sama. Ultra Jump is a monthly manga home to Jojo pt 8 and No Gun no Life.

I knew of Jolyne, but I'd assumed Jojo had already left Jump by Stone Ocean. I guess it makes sense as a leaving point: new magazine, new continuity.

Man there’s a lot of Jumps.
And they're not even all around anymore!
I was bored, so I decided to guess what the four-character abbreviations for most current series are/would be without looking them up:
  • Aguboi
  • Ayatollah
  • Burakuro
  • Bonkore
  • Cheman
  • Shakunika
  • Hakaimagu
  • Yozadaisa
  • Mitasekyu
  • Shinmori
  • Taipagosu
  • Anan

(I left out some because they were too short, and already knew Hiroaka and Bokuben)
