And suddenly, Rebel Without a Cause becomes a message to the future.

I actually kinda want Pete to meet them again. Not sure what I'd want to happen, but still want it to happen.

Hopefully he'd be presented more favorably.

He was presented pretty favorably back then too. He had a friendly chat with Gert and Victor over a meal and was trying to reach out to them.

Then Nico came and blasted him with magic since she figured he was just playing mind games with them.

That's trauma for you. Their trust in adults and authority figures was more or less shattered when they found out their parents were an evil child sacrificing supervillain cult.

It's only in the latest run that they've been taking steps to deal with this. Mostly because the oldest members are adults. And then the whole Doc Justice thing brought that trauma roaring back.

They're traumatized teenage runaways who up to that point have had nothing but negative experiences with adults and authority figures. It's assholish behavior, but understandable.

It doesn't help that in that story Peter was the only member of the New Avengers who wasn't written with a Jerkass Ball. Though tbf, it's not surprising Spider-Woman was a jerkass since she was actually an evil Skrull queen plotting to take over Earth. And ol' Jimmy Howlett's always been kind of an asshole.

That's the one where Gert dismissed Spidey's motto?

I feel like she's misinterpreting it like its the incomplete version "with great power comes great responsibility"

She outright says the people with the greatest responsibility are “kids with no power because we’re the ones who have to keep everyone in check”.

Yeah it’s literal nonsense, just her being a contrarian and sucking herself off.

The we're sys everything.

She doesn't realize that the whole point of that motto is that bad shit happens if people with great power aren't responsible with it. It's not claiming that powerful people are automatically responsible with it or anything.

Gert and Victor of course are missing crucial context for that motto — Peter first said it after him being irresponsible and self-serving with his powers led to his uncle being killed by a robber Peter had allowed to escape earlier.

Runaways' "we're too cool for the genre" attitude is embarrassing honestly

[up] Its also a saying with historical use so its not like not knowing intimate details of Peter Parker's life stops you from figuring out what it means.

It’s like she deliberately chose the most cynical interpretation of that phrase to get a rise out of Peter.

The intended meaning should be incredibly obvious, it’s not rocket science.

[up] I’m 22 and I’m pretty sure if I was 5 years younger I’d still find what she says incredibly cringy. [lol]

Yeah, Gert's whole thing seems to be using Deadpan Snarker speech and cynicism to mask her own insecurities about...everything.

[up]Be honest. Think about what you were actually like at age 15 (Gert's 15, not 17 at the time).

Granted, Gert might also be less keen on the idea of powerful people thinking they should be responsible with it considering her parents' rationale for being supervillains out to sell out the rest of humanity to giants was (eventually) to be "responsible" parents providing their daughter with a better life.

The Pride were, in a warped way, being responsible with their great power. The real issue with them is that they lacked any empathy for people outside of their immediate families, so their sense of responsibility did not extend to anyone else. Then of course there were the Deans and the Hayes who lacked empathy even for the rest of the Pride.

I think its actually a pretty good development, really. Its an aversion of Status Quo Is God to have the Runaways having to deal with actual changes in their lives. Gert was once their leader-ish sort of person but now she's the least mature and it's showing.

Its not a LIKABLE story really but its a fascinating one. It also is a funny hint that Gert's future with the Avengers is, "Yes, at some point I get over being a high school nihilist."

Then of course there were the Deans and the Hayes who lacked empathy even for the rest of the Pride.

I gained much respect for the families who decided, "Okay, how about JUST our kids and us survive." :)

Proper supervillain logic.

It makes sense that the Deans and the Hayes would be the ones to decide to kill the others. The Hayes always felt like outcasts due to being Mutants (or believing they were) and developed a mutant supremacist mindset to compensate. The Deans meanwhile always hated humanity — their initial response to finding out the Gibborim planned to destroy all humanity was amusement.

The Deans were pretty much the most outright evil members of the Pride.

Honestly, all of them plan to wipe out humanity.

So the degrees of what level they're all pure evil are irrelevant.

In other news, Jordan Peterson has discovered that Tahani Coates has parodied him with the Red Skull.

He's basically the Pre-Ben Shapiro.

He's a douchebag "intellectual" who helped found the alt-Right.

If you want the cliff notes version, he's the guy who argues that "masculinity" is an inherent good that is under attack by political correctness and blah bleah blah blah. Science says women should be subservient. Racism is actually good. He's also an atheist who believes religion should be used to control the masses.

He's a real asshole.

No, I'd say most of the New Avengers were perfectly in character there — if only because most of them really don't interact with the kids, like Luke and Spider-Woman.

Also, I never found Gert's speech "cringy" — if anything, I agree with a lot of it.

The Speech

Really?

Because it's like, "Most people don't have great power and those with it aren't responsible with it."

So, what is the argument, that people should be irresponsible with it?

And the people with no power wouldn't be able to hold them in check unless they had power.
