I've got such a huge media backlog to consume, but eventually I'll start reading this manga. I loved the anime. It's such a legitimately sweet world, with a sweet main cast. Still hoping for a second season.

And sure, there's fetish fuel for everyone, but that's not even the point for me. I can think Rachnera and Centorea are best girls, without being attracted to driders or centaurs, or grasping the mechanics of it all. Also, that scene of Manako wanting to be seen. I know that feeling, girl.

I'm not familiar with the fandom though, beyond the friend who referred the show to me, this thread, and a quick scan to see if there was any news about a season 2.

I'm not really sure there is a fandom, honestly. There's... not really a ton of substance to the series aside from the designs, so the "fandom" just tends to be the general monster girl fandom.

It's been fun.

Ah. Huh.

Well, I'd be happy to hear about everyone's favorite character! No judgment, of course!

I don't mean to say it's a bad series, of course! I think you're right to call it sweet, in some respects. I think my favorite characters design-wise are the satyr girls from the dairy farm, but from the main cast... I like Lala and wish she was used more!

It's been fun.

I didn't take it as you calling it bad. From what I gathered over last page's posts, it's just slowly paced/not moving towards a resolution. The characters don't develop a ton, but they were mostly well likeable to begin with. I think Lala's cool too, and I did read and like the approach where she knows she can be patient, because when he does eventually die, they are meant to be together.

But during life (and if possible in the afterlife), I'd still love a Marry Them All ending.

Yeah, I do think that's probably going to be the end. It's either that or Miia, after all.

It's unfortunate that I think you can really feel Okayado burning out on the series, though. He ended up dropping his other monster girl series entirely, and progress on MonMusu has been very slow for... well over a year now.

It's been fun.

I am also rooting for Miia, but there seems to be little reason to be invested into the series.

That's kind of sad.

Maybe if the anime keeps going, it might condense and distill the story to its purest form.

I do feel a little bad that while I grew to really like Miia in episode 1, as the others started getting introduced, she seemed more like a Clingy Jealous Girl until she became one of my least favorites. I hope she grows out of that.

[up][up][up]Which one do you mean, 12 Beast or Deadline Summoner? I'm not in the fandom anymore. Feel kinda sorry for the man though, the mangaka's life is a hard and ungrateful one.

By the way I loved the anime at the time and I even bought the first OAV in the misguided belief that it would have helped funding a season 2. I think chapter 43 would've made for a great slice-of-life anime episode with Miia's shenanigans, the appearance of pretty much every girl up to that point, some nice outfits (Teacher Mero, Shrine Maiden Miia...) and even a cameo from some girls from the then-active Monmusu gacha game!

Speaking of that, even if I dislike those kinds of games, I was bummed that it didn't last even a full year. Some girls' designs and personalities were pretty clever and/or interesting, I remember fondly the all-American jackalope, the metalhead baphomet, the autistic jorogumo (Japanese spider-lady), the manticore who loves sentai, the half-dressed ghost... they even had a hasshaku-sama several years before Lady Dimitrescu!

Yeah, the gacha game was pretty charming, actually. I think it probably ended up folding because, well, it wasn't really offering anything much for the money. The story sections weren't long enough at all to be worth the gacha investment - and as much as the joke of paying money for jpegs gets used a lot, it's a problem for your game if that's the actual truth. It's a shame, because the character designs are nice.

It's been fun.

I wish someone could reuse those designs but I guess there would be problems with the rights' owners, and I have no idea what's Okayado's part in all of this. To add insult to injury, the game ended right when the best fanartists started to leave the fandom to catch up with the next waifus du jour, so the potential for new stories and designs went wasted.

I confess that I was so much into the series at the time that I went on imageboards and followed the development of fanarts and such, and most of the promised ones never came out. I was there when users invented the tale of the policeman and his harem of dangerous girls, it was really funny and sweet, too bad that it petered out after a while, so most plans turned out into nothing at the end. At least I can be "proud" that one of my suggestions was accepted: the chapter opener image with Kimihito surrounded by Wanted posters modified in order to depict the policeman and the posters of his haremettes :)

Well, Okayado does claim that Cerea is his favourite, so it's not surprising that we're now on the 7th(?) straight Centaur chapter. 72 was the v-tuber Unicorn Niko, and 73 features a bird-brained Pegasus named Pegasania.

I dropped out of this series because it felt like after the "Giant Suu vs. other Giant Slime" chapters that the manga got too focused on the fetish stuff and less on the fun characters and humor {to me, the chapters before then had a good balance}. More specefically, I quit in the middle of the lamia arc. Has that gotten better over time, or is that still an issue with the manga?

Boy was I surprised to see a new comment in this thread.

I still haven't started reading the manga, kind of because I'm waiting for it to have an end in sight.

I don't think I said my favorite of the main girls. Definitely Centorea and Rachnera.

@Marston: No, not really. It's gotten rather more directionless since then; there was a short series introducing new centaurs, mostly based around fetishes like lactation, and now we're going into a school AU that happened because Smith found a magic grimoire authored by a witch and opened it in Protag-kun's house.

It's been fun.

It's online officially for free if you can read Japanese, though only the most recent chapter, I think.

Just an FYI, the show is leaving American Hulu at the end of the month. I don't know if it'll be going to other streaming services.

Even I think the series ran its course a long time ago. Even slice of life stuff needs some sort of direction to build towards or it isn't any fun to read. I didn't mind the Farm arc like some people did but I had zero interest in reading the Lamia arc and only NOW do I find out there was both a Centaur Arc and School AU arc.

Where is this all going? Why should I care anymore?

At this point it just feels like putting them in new situations and/or introducing new characters is the only way to get anything fresh out of the series now, which I understand, but which really isn't a good situation for a manga to be in unless you're aiming to become some kind of semi-procedural mummy franchise like Conan or Lupin. Which isn't going to work with sexy monster girls.

It's been fun.

Gives me a bad feeling given that Okayado has stopped working on 12 Beast (which I didn't know until a few months ago that it stopped a few years ago).

From what I heard he was starting to burn out physically working on two series at once, so I don't blame him (which series he dropped was probably mandated by the publisher).

It's been fun.
