AKIRA was the first anime film that I watched, and I absolutely love it. I have both the film and manga versions and the soundtrack.
The movie had to compress the whole thing down a bit too much, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. What particularly interested me was one of the technical aspects of its creation: apparently, instead of having voice actors match lip movements, they first did the voice acting and then animated the facial expressions to match it.

When it came time to watch the anime, I decided to avoid controversy and just watch the Japanese with English subtitles.
Anyway, is Akira a common name in Japan? I see a lot of people, both fictional and real, with that given name. It makes me wonder if an American equivalent of the story would be named "John".
I caught it on Toonami relatively recently.
It got really gross near the end.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."It's sad, many anime fans don't even seem to know what AKIRA is these days.
This shall be my true, Start of DarknessAgreed 100%. This is the film that showed that animated films aren't just for kids, not to mention the slick animation by TMS Entertainment and its superb writing.

"You can run, but you can't hide from the Buzzinator!"I first heard about this while playing Scott Pilgrim Vs The World with some friends, apparently, a boss character named Todd Ingram references AKIRA with his super attack.
Why doesn't this have a thread yet?
This is the first work of fiction that has incited an emotional reaction from me.
On that note, discuss AKIRA here.
