I remember one episode where in the future ned has just become a widower again after his latest wife Marge dies. Then it pans to reveal a whole wall of dead wives (most minor female characters like cookie Kwan.) Humorously the animators made a mistake, one of the portraits is of Aunt Patty whose a lesbian, when they almost definitely meant Aunt Selma who has a history of marrying different men.

I'm surprised anyone noticed considering they're identical twins

They have slightly different hairstyles. Patty's hair is rounder, while Selma's has a part in the middle. That's how I noticed.

Doesnt Patty have triangle earrings and Selma has round ones? That's how I tell them apart.

I believe this is from the episode where Bart takes focusyn for his ADHD and becomes a conspiracy theorist so he steals a tank. It's from a time when Simpsons plots were outlandish and weird but at least they were funny. Nowadays I mainly watch out of force of habit.

I think it was from that Season 9-10 era. Where the plots were becoming more wacky and there were blatant cracks appearing but some of that magic and earnesty from the classic run was still often there.

Season 11, actually. "Brother's Little Helper", to be specific.

Ah right, Season 11 is where I think they finally capsized, there were the odd good ones, but I think by the quintuplets episode I noticed it wasn't actually that good anymore.

I didn't realize Nelson's dad was an actual character. I thought he was just a joke.

he's supposed to be unseen because he's not come home from the store!

Interestingly, before they started that, he was seen now and then. Like in that part of "Bart Star."

Nelson's Dad: I'm proud of you, son. Come on, let's go to Hooters to celebrate.
Nelson: Aw, I don't wanna bother Mom at work.

OK but I have like zero memory of him ever appearing and it definately sounds like something from later seasons.

I'm pretty sure he debuted in Season 9, or around then.

The video goes over it. He actually appears twice in the classic era, once as a soccer coach and once rounding up Nelson for church. It's not until the 15th season that he started being mentioned as having left his family and abandoning them became his shtick.

At least they tried to give an explanation for him, unlike with Rev. Lovejoy's daughter who appeared once and then disappeared like she never even existed. As far as I know they didn't even give her a cameo or nod.

Well, she did get arrested and was in a boarding school as punishment before that, anyway.

She actually did make one cameo appearance. She was either on Lisa’s soccer team or the opposing one in “Marge Gamer.”

She's also in yellow badge of cowardice (the school race episode) with lots of other one shots such as Kent Brockman's kid and Rainier Wolf castle's daughter.

And I think she had a cameo last year when Marge took Lisa clothes shopping.

The weird thing with Nelson's Dad is how they have two designs for him, and it's not even Early Instalment Weirdness where they changed it later, no, they keep interchanging between them.

It reminds me how they kept doing loads of different voices and that odd philosophical persona with Ralph in early seasons, despite nailing his final dopey persona and even his voice perfectly as early as "Lisa's Substitute".
