What makes the "false" screenshot better is that it clearly shows the trope. This is one of the better photoshopped image suggestions, since it is unobtrusive and hardly misleading about the work. So a few white pixels don't actually show up in the work. It's not a huge alteration of the source material. The image is very convincing and I honestly couldn't tell, after playing the game, whether or not the image is fake. For once the added pixels actually, well, add something of worth to the image.

I'd much rather we use post 37 than a cliché Before And After image.

And the Notice This aspect makes the before and after part clear in one frame.

I still say multi-frame pictures are not bad, but avoiding image clutter is also good.

Supporting the "fake" screen capture.

Yes, a legitimate one might be more fitting, but there isn't one that can show the trope just as good. Also, the kind of forgery we did doesn't give people misleading ideas about the actual game.

The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.

The problem with before-and-after images for this trope is that it cannot be represented visually, and before-and-after images will always suffer from attempting to show this trope and failing. It's not like Took a Level in Badass that can easily be seen at a glance from an image, because everyone knows what a badass looks like, and what a nonbadass looks like.

Two lines of hearts, one with three and one with four; can that be meaningful to anyone who doesn't already understand this trope? Someone who has played a Zelda game and knows what those hearts represent would know, but that's only because they already know the trope. Someone who doesn't know the trope would have no idea with that means, and no image that I can imagine would show it to that person.

I think it's nice to show a heart container from some Zelda game. It is fitting that the Trope Namer should be honored in that way, but let's not pretend that it would actually illustrate the trope. It would just make the page more visually appealing.

The red hearts have the word LIFE right above them. I don't think that's a problem.

[up]That's a rather broad assumption, since it assumes people know nothing about a video game is what the image is for, and game tropes don't work quite that way.

But I would vote for the single image with Link picking up the heart anyway.

Do we have enough for a crowner?

But the crowner neglected to state that the Lo Z picture is a photoshop rather than an actual screenshot, so people voting for that may be unaware of that.

Well considering the guy flashes and fades away as soon as the heart container is grabbed, you could grab a shot of him not there... It would just be really hard to do. So a "shop" is not a ding against it at all.

[up] It matters somewhat. Ideally our images shouldn't be misleading.

That said, I think that in this particular case, simply acknowledging in the caption that it's photoshopped should do.

If the crowner keeps changing like it is, it won't matter...the second option's been steadily climbing in votes and now the ratio's higher than the first.

In any case, I've created a new thread for discussion about misleading images in general.

No. It does not matter at all. Maybe that's from a beta where there was a bling effect. Or from a dev kit. Or not from Legend of Zelda at all. Who cares? It does not look edited.

If you are going to claim it matters, you need to explain why. Not just "it does so".

Odd, you never explained why not.

Drawing attention to what is in the game (a larger Life Meter) cannot be misleading. Being misleading would be making a non-example look like one. Page pictures are not marketing. Helping show the trope better is to make the information better understood.

I don't have to explain why not (although, I and others have, repeatedly). The burden of proof is on the party making a claim, not the party who denies it.

I am not making a claim, "not A" isn't at all the same as "yes B". No consensus means no change; innocent until proven guilty; all that. So far there is only an utterly unconvincing case made for a dramatic change to Image Pickin' attitude and practice.

Bump for votes...as of right now:

  • First Zelda game, screencap tweaked from source to make extended life meter stand out.◊: 6 (yeas:11 nays:5) 2.20 : 1
  • Heart container◊ from Ocarina Of Time (first panel only): 3 (yeas:7 nays:4) 1.75 : 1
  • Zelda heart container award: 2 (yeas:7 nays:5) 1.40 : 1

The current is in the red.

The tweaked NES screenshot is faithful in spirit (though I'd prefer a dungeon background since you got most of them from slaying bosses), a bit more important than being faithful in letter. The N64 screenshot is carried by text alone.

I am surprised that the heart piece picture is getting so many votes. Am I the only one who notices that it is a picture of a heart piece, not a heart container? The text indicates that a heart container is being gained, but why would anyone think we should use that picture when all the other choices at least include heart containers.

Because the heart gain is the important part, the item itself less so.

[up][up]You're absolutely right! I didn't even notice. Maybe the assumption should be that if that gets picked, we'll find a high quality picture of an actual heart container from Ocarina of Time to use.

I also found this, which is a lot like the other NES Zelda picture, but it doesn't have to be edited nearly as much.

And has no one suggested this yet? It's a little bit too literal, but that last panel does a perfect job of showing that he's gaining a heart. I guess I'll add it to the crowner.
