Well, actually, it was. Remember that YYH also aired on Toonami, the show meant for kids coming home from school. They had to cut out the mild curse words and I believe they censored Yusuke's line about Genbu's "balls" when he put his head on wrong.

Naturally these censorships weren't in the Adult Swim version. (or was it Toonami Midnight Run? I forgot about that)

But the real changes to the BR dub were some iffy translations that Funi apparently regretted. I never looked up a complete list but IIRC, our versy own TV Tropes Character Sheet was what first clued me into this fact b y talking about how Suzuka's real name is Suzuki and they fix this. Some people on another forum told me there are many other changes as well. So it's less censorship and more them trying to fix dub errors.

Didn't they also change a bunch of jokes? Probably worth watching to see that.

Yeah, I'm really not aware of the specifics of the changes for the most part, I just know they exist and I owe it to my lifetime of being a YYH fanboy to experience these changes. I remember I was so mad after I bought Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 on DVD and then learned about the changes only included in the BR release....

Oh well.

Huh. I looked at the wiki and yeah, there's a translation change article.

What I thought was that the English dub changed Yusuke's lines to be more aggressive. The dub had some great one-liners as well.

I think it fits for Delinquent Yusuke honestly.

I'm not sure what the overall opinion on it was, but I always loved him telling Suzaku to hold his breath (after previously saying he'd rip out only one of his lungs).evil grin

My favorites were when he fought Jin and tried to counter his wind-move. "Let's see which one of us can take a bigger ass kicking! (boom) Seriously? At least one of us should'a died!"

Also when he fights Hiei the second time. Hiei's like, "You ready!?" and Yusuke's like, "Bring it on, b'tch!" It's just so in-character.

There was actually a bit of accidental censorship/use of the old Toonami-edited lines at random on the season 1 BR release and possibly others.

I've been wanting to watch this show since I've heard good things about it and I dig the old-school anime art style. Is there any place where it's legally (I actually mean legally, not "legally") being streamed that I can go to?

@karx: my only real complaint with the series is that it gets pretty underwhelming near the end. The penultimate arc's end is a bit weird and then the last arc introduces a great concept and interesting characters but it kinda just rushes it and doesnt show anything.

The last episode is a wonderful finale though.

Besides that it is one of the best battle shounen out there.

I've gotten through the first four episodes.

This show is great. Everybody in the cast is likable, I'm invested in them and want to see them succeed, and overall I'm really enjoying myself.

Oh, dude, the first like 20 episodes are the weakest part of the show. After that it's going to get even better.

Mmmmmmn... if something takes 20 episodes to get interesting I'm usually evasive advertising it to people.

The first 20 episodes are not bad. Yusuke's funeral, his determination to help Kurama, the initial Always a Bigger Fish that takes place when Yusuke gets curbstomped by Gouki, Yusuke's jubilation when he resurrects were all good moments.

I rather enjoyed Genkai's tournament, also.

It's just the series turned into pure battle shounen around the Suzaku arc and finally settled on that with the Dark Tournament arc. That's where it found it's soul, but the earlier arcs weren't that weak. The Saint Beast arc is where I'd say the series was at it's weakest.

Yeah I would say the Spirit Detective stuff is really good on its own merits. Hunter X Hunter is what I think for "Great show with weak opening arc".

I never meant to imply the earlier episodes weren't good or entertaining, just that the Dark Tournament arc is where the show starts to get a lot better and it along with Chapter Black are the most highly regarded parts of the series.

Also, I've been thinking about this for a bit, and after doing some comparisons I honestly think Yusuke might be the best battle shounen protagonist or at least top 3. It's a bit rare for a protagonist in a battle shounen (or well, actually a lot of manga and anime) to carry his series and be the character you're most invested in but I think a lot of people really cared about Yusuke. Even Hx H doesn't have it beat in that regard, although who the "main character" is in that series honestly depends on what arc you're talking about.

I kind of think the opposite. The early episodes are good, Chapter Black nosedived hard toward the end and even the Dark Tournament had its arc fatigue.

I think the early episodes are pretty consistent in quality, the later arcs have higher highs and lower lows.

I just enjoy the series for the creativity in it's fighters techniques at times.

Or the simplicity. Yusuke's bread and butter strongest technique is making a finger gun. Simple, but effective.

SILENCE YOU!

So, something I forgot to bring up from my random viewing of the old Poltergeist Report movie...

I watched the sub, and despite know Kazuma's actual last name, I could swear they were pronouncing it Kuwahara the entire time.

Again, this is the sub, so in addition to spelling it that way in the subtitles, it actually sounded like everyone was saying Kuwahara instead of Kuwabara. That's so weird. I wonder it that's where the mistake in his name came from back then?

I kind of think the opposite. The early episodes are good, Chapter Black nosedived hard toward the end and even the Dark Tournament had its arc fatigue.

From my recollection, I would probably agree with you that the ending to Chapter Black was a bit..."what?", but people generally like what preceded it.

I'm pretty certain that the ending was at least partly due to Togashi's documented Creator Breakdown which also explains why the next arc had a good setup/interesting characters but the ended up being super underwhelming. From what I read Jump didn't like his ideas as for where to take the characters, so on top of the mental and physical exhaustion he kind of just quit.

It's really a shame but even with those problems I'd still rank YYH above many other battle shounen.

[up][up][up] I wouldn't put any stock into rumours about editor meddling because they are the number one scapegoat.

Given how much Togashi gets away with while writing Hunter x Hunter, it's more likely that his health issues started around the final arc of YYH. He has to take frequent, long hiatuses from h x h due to his health.
