X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Chances are if Betsy makes it to the movies she’ll either be full Asian or British-Japanese biracial.

Logically speaking if they do keep Betsy’s relation to Captain Britain then there’s multiple ways to keep that like also making Braddock himself part Japanese or making him & Betsy step or adopted siblings.

While no one gives a fuck about Kwannon. She’ll be lucky if she gets a minor role as an antagonist in whatever movie Betsy appears on. From what I hear that Fallen Angel comic of hers is the most unpopular series of the current X-line.

[up]Where you been? Kwannon is in the Hellions book now.

And Betsy as Biracial Asian already happened in X-Men Apocalypse, and barely anyone like yourself noticed.

So I’d say going forward they’ll treat British Betsy and Asian Psylocke as two separate people across media.

[up] Yes I know but Fallen Angels was headlined as a Kwannon-lead series & it wasn't very well-receieved.

She she's in Hellions but its an ensemble book starring similar big-timers like Mr. Sinisters, Havok, & some more obscure but crazy fun Mutants.

And while Betsy was Asian in Apocalypse that means there was no problem in cutting out the middleman & just getting rid of Kwannon altogether because of the 2 Betsy is the only of importance.

Chances are the next time Betsy appears she'll be an X-Men & Kwannon will just be some unimportant ninja-mook.

[up] I think Caucasian Betsy is probably here to stay. Certainly in the comics; movies are tougher to predict because they'll sometimes racebend characters anyway. But certainly, in the comics, they're not going to make Betsy Asian again. While they still fuck up a whole lot, Marvel's slowly getting better about not being totally offensive, like inserting a white character into a POC body.

As for Kwannon, there's definitely an audience for her. A lot of people love her. Even the people who disliked Fallen Angels mostly liked how Kwannon was written. So I think Marvel's probably also inclined to keep her around. She makes a great anti-hero, a wild card on any team.

[up] Honestly I find the very idea that she apparently has a "lot of fans" to begin with shocking. She hasn't been a character for decades now, having only very recently gained any sort of actual characterization at all.

Well if anything she's lucky the Psylocke imagery is iconic, that should at least prevent her from quickly hitting the benches. She is in the famous ninja bathing suit for a reason after all.

Heh though I can't help but find it amusing the idea that a good portion of Kwannon's fans are already existing Psylocke fans who aren't even aware that the change between characters.

Has the new character Trinary shown any romantic interests yet?

[up][up] Her fans are mostly people who thought it was bullshit that Betsy took her body. Kwannon did also appear for a time in the '90s, as Revanche, and she was interesting there. Her getting her body back was something plenty of people had wanted for a while, and they see a lot of potential in a character working to regain her identity after it was stolen by a white person.

[up]So Trinary’s as old as the last generation of students? For some reason, I assumed she was older. At least as old as Cannonball, Moonstar or Magma.

[up][up] Alright so a minority of fans from the 90's who remember a time when Betsy was in her original state before pop culture solidified Kwannon's appearance as her own & who care a decent amount for a relatively minor side character.

Damn that's a niche a group, way cult.

[up]Admittedly as I kid I very vividly remember X-Men #20, and Betsy showing up declaring the woman they thought was Betsy was Kwannon. “This woman is, and always has been, AN IMPOSTOR!”

But Pop Culture Osmosis and all that.

For me at least the hook to Kwannon is that she's an established blank slate with an iconic look that you can take in any direction.

Its why they brought back the classic suit.

Betsy is now most likely near unrecognizable to her modern fanbase due to her extremely overhauled appearance so Kwannon is taking all the iconic Psylocke imagery so it doesn't feel like the character they knew is completely gone.

[up] Basically, what's happening with Kwannon right now is reclamation. It's no coincidence that the people who seem to be most interested in her are people of coolour. Psylocke was always walking cultural appropriation, and colonialism. She was a white woman who took over the body and the life of someone from another race and nation. Very problematic, to say the least.

Kwannon is a push back against that. It's reclaiming culture from a white invader. That's a pretty compelling story.

Actually now that I think about it. If Marvel decides to revert Betsy again they'll most likely do it in a situation where her body gets destroyed & when she gets reformed it will be in a body with a new appearance in line with how she is popularly portrayed as.

She's even in a perfect situation to do this, with the X-urrection pods. Hell the main X-Men comic went into some detail about this. Some Mutants are actually turning in wills stating for them not to be reborn in their original bodies & instead in bodies like Magnetos.

Strong possibility Marvel might do this one of these days.

[up]That’s what I’m hoping happens, especially since it’s Betsy who was the offended party in the original story, captured for years by the Hand and going to get revenge on the Hand assassin who took her life from her. The whole thing resolved itself well enough too, Revanche died and Psylocke felt the need to live for both of them. It was Kwannon who was the issue here, and given everything, there should be only one.

Like common sense will stop Marvel. tongue

See the thing about nobodies is attempts at pushing them are generally pretty temporary.

I recall when Deadpool formed his own team comprised of C-Lister characters like Foolkiller & Solo. They were all given series in an attempt at making them bigger only for all those series to wind up canceled before reaching issue 10 & they all quickly fell back into relative obscurity.

I do not believe Marvel will revert Betsy back to being Asian. Betsy is white, and she will stay white.

We'll have to wait and see whether Kwannon sticks around, but she's certainly got plenty of creators who like her, and that'll help.

Or they at least like her potential, as a blank slate with an iconic look. That gives a lot of early momentum. Now they have to make someone likable.

[up] That’s prolly the primary reason.

From what I hear of Kwannon she strikes me as a very niche character. Like she was only relavent during a relatively short period of time & it was the early 90’s at that meaning she hasn’t been a thing for nearly 30 years. Which all usually means a cult fanbase at best like the Whizzer or Sleepwalker.

[up] I'm really enjoying Excalibur, New Mutants is loads of fun when it focuses on the originals and heavy drama when it focuses on the younger generation, X-Force is a solid X-Force series, X-Men is relatively interesting done-in-ones setting the stage for bigger stories, and I am so psyched for X-Factor and Children of the Atom.

It's only issue 1 at the moment but Hellions looks to be pretty interesting by essentially being the X-Men's version of Suicide Squad.

Ya got Mister Sinister leading a team comprised of Havoc, Pyslocke & possibly the most batshit & obscure Mutants ever with the violently insane Scalphunter, Wild Child, Empath, Nanny, & Orphan-Maker.

And the first baddie they have to face is Madelyne Pryor of all people.
