X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I actually think that's what he said. He was told what was going to happen before his run.

Read HOX#5 and, uh, well. I get why they did it, but who thought letting their entire Rogues Gallery on the island was a good idea?

Also this whole thing is really starting to come off as a cult. And not in a good way.

[up][up] I think that's kind of the point. It's not a good idea, but it's the only idea left that will save them all. That's also why they are telling all of them that they need to "abide by the rules" of Krakoa, which probably means "no killing." And, to be fair, we've already seen the X-Men team up with their villains before, like Mister Sinister.

I love the ending of this issue. Almost a complete reversal of the ending for Ho X #4.

Man. Orchis lady is gonna be pissed when she finds out her husband sacrificed herself for nothing. Unfortunately, that's just gonna make her want to kill mutants even more. And we all know how dangerous those types are.

I do think something is off with Jean Grey. Her response to Storm's question makes me wonder if she's the "real" Jean:

Storm: And how do I know it's you, Jean?
Marvel Girl: Oh...I'm the only "me" that ever was, Ororo.

Don't know. Guess we'll see soon enough.

Checked it out. That part where Storm was vetting everyone while preaching to the crowd has me worried. Hell, this whole thing, while I very much get why it's going down, has me worried.

But it's still cooking, so lets see how things develop.

[up]At this point I'm interested what the other writers in the ongoings might have to say about it.

[up][up][up][up][up] Oh, I hope so. My guess is that Dr. Gregor's plans for mutants will become public, she'll become enraged at the concept of mutants gaining independence, she'll try to attack Krakoa, the mutants will stop her, and it'll in turn give them good PR. I also think that Franklin Richards and the Fantastic Four are going to come back into play.

Some random speculation:

  • Marvel Girl isn't actually Jean Grey — it's Madelyn Pryor, who was recruited by Xavier to pretend to be Jean. She isn't evil, though, she is a decoy — the real Jean is their ace in the hole.
  • Xavier has been subtly manipulating everybody in order so that they work together without problems. He's going to reveal this in the end and they are going to exile him from Krakoa — meaning he can never go to the nation he helped found.
  • Dr. Gregor is going to activate Nimrod as a way to get revenge on the X-Men, but it turns out that the year 1000 timeline comes into play and somehow they get the Phalanx to absorb Nimrod.

If "Jean" really is Madelyne (and let's face it, Madelyne was a pod Jean in the 1980s), then the scene of her in HOX #1 fits with what we see in this issue: giving Madelyne another chance, and her tears well up. It's kinda touching.

Recruiting villains isn't unprecedented, since a large fraction of X-Men were villains. And some people may be willing to work with a particular leader (say, Magneto instead of Xavier). There was a line in the issue that Proteus was only a villain because no one had solved his body-burnout issues.

[up] Yes, which makes the fact that they did solve his body burnout issue relevant — he has backup "husks" of his body that he can inhabit anytime his current body burns out.

Curiously, Proteus was the only one of the Five Mutants that was dead and needed to be brought back to life in order for the Five to bring mutants back to life. I assuming that Eva Bell brought forward a past version of him to resurrect him first and then put him back.

New solicits for X-Men #3 & #4. It looks like Cyclops and Emma Frost will be going to the Savage Land for #3 and Storm and Armor are going to fight an "old nemesis" for #4.

This does seem quite culty.

I must again reiterate my concern that I hope this run doesn't come down on the side of Status Quo Is God. Portraying the most massive attempt at mutant progress yet as Jumping Off the Slippery Slope would be... not good.

[up] I mean, Hickman is in charge of Dawn of X, too, so I doubt it will revert back to the old Status Quo. The solicits have even referenced Krakoa.

Can I say I loved the statement that the Five have already rezzed thousands of mutants? Now if you wanna bring an unjustly killed mutant back (come on, Wallflower!) that's the only explanation you need.

On the page explaining resurrections; whoever writes those documents ponders recruiting him and Mimic to the resurrection team.

[up] I took that to mean that hypothetically if Synch or Mimic were around...not that they were definitely resurrected. Plus you have to wonder where on the "resurrection schedule" Skin and Synch are. I would love to see them again though! I know Hickman was a fan of Generation X so I wouldn't put it past him.

Okay, so I made a list of all the mutants that I think were definitely resurrected by the Five. Here it is. Spoilers, obviously. But this basically means that writers can use any mutant they want, even if they are dead, without giving much of an explanation.
