Not going to lie, I honestly could not stand Matsuda until like, the very last scenes of the manga/anime where he actually stopped being stupid for five seconds and did something badass. It probably didn't help that his dubbed voice was grating.

Man I like Ls scream. The original scene had intentional Narm and they Took It Up To Eleven in the english dub. [up] he was also Badass in the Mafia infiltration scene EDIT: just listen to Jet Set Radios "Bout The city" while listining to L scream for 10 minutes... I'm surprised how better it made it. Other EDIT: in fact LS japanese scream works with most of jet sets music

The mafia scene, faking his own death by 'falling' off a high building, proceeding to put his life on the line again in order to catch Higuchi, claiming he was the second L so that Soichiro and his family wouldn't be hurt, stopping L and Light from fighting twice, being on board with killing Mello after what he did to Soichiro; Matsuda has a few 'badass' scenes before the finale, they're just not as conspicuous in comparison to the super geniuses he hangs around with. He also realises his incompetence in comparison to the others and when he 'talks serious' (about Kira and in the epilogue) he actually has some interesting viewpoints.

Matsuda does tend to be passive and his intelligence score is a lot lower than L and Light's (though only a few points below the rest of the taskforce) but personally I think he had enough moments that point out that's not all there is to his character. At least in the manga, the anime could have done with including some of the scenes from above.

stopping L and Light from fighting twice
Didnt he only stop them once? The first time he tried Sochiro just told him to let them be.

Aizawa's my favorite task force member, all in all. He's gotten in way too deep for his liking, but he does his damnedest to muddle through anyway, and I love that in a character. But Matsuda's a close second.

I just realized... As Sidoh proves a Shinigami does not know instantly where your Death Note is unless you know the name and face of who owns it. So Ryuk must have chosen Light Yagami as he flew straight to his house.

Maybe he was just watching from the globe orbs in the shinigami realms. Or just flying overhead when he picked it up.

[up][up] I'm pretty sure Ryuk was watching to see who picked it up. At least, that's what I gathered because he was waiting at the entrance to the human realm and looked like he was watching.

anyone consider the one-shot canon? The makers of the anime certainly do considering the Wammys house scene and the Shinigami King Figurine. And the drawing looks a bit odd considering how its been 2 years since the chapter 108.

Yeah, Near apparently hit puberty at the age of eighteen or so. And the font for the L has reverted. And everything is just generally off. I don't believe Obata was involved. I can't vouch for Ohba, but I certainly hope not. Certainly, in the aforementioned Wammy's House scene in the second movie, they didn't go with the whole bizarrely-OOC angle where L doesn't care about justice and Mello wins an apathy contest.

OK, so I have a question.

I started watching Death Note recently, and it's pretty cool, and my little sister started watching it with me, too. She is 11, but very intelligent for her age. (It runs in the family, if I do say so myself.)

So my mom found out what it was about, and got very mad at me for letting her watch it. She is particularly uncomfortable with the idea of a Villain Protagonist.

But I also think that I know my little sister very well, and that she can handle it. Plus, it's technically for kids, isn't it? She really wants to finish watching it.

I'm torn. Do I obey my mom, or risk screwing up my sister for life? I want to let her do what she wants, but I'm afraid of getting us in trouble.

What episode are you guys on, if you don't mind my asking? If you're already rather far in, I think the best decision would be to continue. In all honestly, I've always felt the most intense thing about Death Note itself is the idea of it — it's rather disconcerting to think of a human having so much power and it plays with our sense of fairness and morality.

Death Note is technically for kids too, as it appeared in Shonen Jump. I think the biggest reason I would let her watch is that, I believe seeing the conclusion will clarify a lot of things. And banning her from it would only add to the show's mystique. At least, that's my opinion. I think, though, that if you let her watch it, you should make sure to watch it with her and perhaps discuss any points that might trouble her.

Kids can handle a lot of stuff if they have the right direction. I watched my first R-rated movie at 11, and I don't think I'm all that much the worse for wear because of it.

Ultimately, though, you know her best and will have to judge. If your mother has expressly forbidden her from watching it, however, I would try to get your mom on board before continuing.

I totally agree that kids can handle more than they're given credit for. I saw R rated movies when I was younger than her — my Dad would let me watch 'em with him when my mom wasn't around.

We are on episode 21, I think, so we're almost done, and I've seen ahead to 26. There's nothing that's too bad so far. Is there anything else that comes up later, though?

But... I think you're right that I should watch them with her, though. I could answer her questions for her. That is probably what I'll do.

I did kinda feel bad about planning on disobeying my mom, but I think I'm over that now.

Also, I admit that I'm relatively new to anime. TV Tropes and the forums got me interested in it. I don't know much about Japan, and I'm wondering, they must have different ideas about what is appropriate for children. It could just be my relatively small sampling, though.

I talked to my mom about it again. She said she's gonna think about it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Is there anything else I could say to her, you think?

I'd love to have her watch it with me, but my mom is not into this sort of thing. I think it would probably just offend her.

She's the sort who would rather watch the Kardashians and shows about "Real Housewives."

tell her it's more a crime drama with supernatural elements.

it's tamer than csi and criminal minds.

though grissom is far cooler than L ;)

She already knows what it's about.

I made the mistake of trying to tell her the story, and that's when she got mad at me and said that is way too fucked up for an 11 year old. Kinda my fault there. I felt really stupid about that... I didn't realize she would react that way.

Besides, I don't think comparing it to other shows for adults will make her change her mind.

[up] Well, I think that this is a decision for you and your family. But I watched every episode with my 12 year old cousin and she enjoyed it.

I think that when it comes to these types of shows (ones that deal with mature subject matters and lots of grey morality) it's important to discuss things with the younger viewer. While watching with my cousin, I asked her questions about the plot and the characters to see how she was reacting to things.

In her opinion, L holding Misa captive was wrong because "L didn't have enough evidence and was just guessing that she did it. He's technically right but he doesn't know for sure and he doesn't really have proof and she could've been innocent. You can't torture people because 'I totally know they did it, even though I can't really prove it.'" This surprised me, because she thought L was generally "adorable" and he was her favorite character. The fact that she was able to think about the implications of his actions and see things from other points of view, rather than just agree with L, showed me that she could handle the rest of the series and was mature enough to watch it.

Pre-teens are generally smarter than we give them credit for, and I think this series is a great way to start a conversation with them about law, morality, right & wrong, and society in general. My advice is that, if you do decide to continue watching, you should ask questions and discuss the issues that the show brings up.

We really did have some interesting discussions about the morality issues of the show. She's admitted to me that she's not really sure what the right thing for them to do is anymore.

Plus, our favorite character is L, too. Oh, she was devastated by episode 25...

I like Light. I sympathize with Light.

But WTF was up with the corruption story? He grabs a sled to slide down the slippery slope.

He's rationalized killing those criminals. I get that. But he kills fake! L without a second thought. No conflict whatsoever.

Light: He hurt my ego.T___T DIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!!!!

I might be remembering wrong. I dunno.

My favorite character is Light by the way.

I gotta admit, he is pretty cool. He's the kind of guy you Love to Hate.

I think there has to be something wrong with him. He's pretty messed up.
