Without awareness that she's trans, the "room to herself" thing is also easily explained by Carla coming from money. If Joyce learned that, she'd likely assume that's why.

that's such a good run down of Carla, really reminded me why she's one of my favourite characters in this.
I kind of appreciate how being trans really informs Carla's viewpoint and character, even if it's not something explicitly brought up very often. Her not having to be a role model is a big deal both in universe and out.

What I know is that my mother's family - Irish Catholic - used to live in a largely Polish Catholic community - due to Lebensraum, the Poles saw the second-greatest massacre of civilians in that horrible era, to the tune of about two million, and they wouldn't let her forget it, and she won't let me, either. (While I mostly like Stephen Fry, for that reason I rather loathe his comment that "we know which side of the border Auschwitz was on.")

Well, the father to someone around Joyce's age probably didn't emigrate for that reason. Unless Carol considers the US-born son of a Polish migrant as Polish. Not unlikely.

On a lighter note, all this talk about Polish Jews has me thinking of a series of dumb jokes regarding a certain town about 200 kilometers northwest of Lviv. (EDIT: To be clear, Lviv is pretty close to the Polish border - in fact, it was Polish, called Lwow, before the Big One. ...I'm talking about Chelm, obviously.)

Hmm... this is a bit of a potato, but even though Joyce met Tristan in church, I have to think, if he's Polish, he's probably either Catholic or Orthodox, which is probably no better than Jewish in Carol's eyes.

I was thinking this would be a long sequence of Joyce trying to stay close to her mother but eventually failing, but looks like that ship already sunk before it even sailed.
She is just so fanatic in so many levels it's hard to even relate to her in a basic social level.
I guess I'm lost in the Wistah hills. Still think the almost pathologically proud trans woman is trans.
