Awful name: New Crowner 10/24/11: Dropped A Bridget On Him

Worst name ever. Contains no clue at all as to what the trope is about, or any connection to it once the mystery is revealed.

It is about being attracted to someone of bent gender when that is not the character's natural inclination. Something like Gender Dissonance could work.

Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty

The name is indeed bad. I once suggested Bridget Is A Guy (as a spear counterpart to Samus Is a Girl), but turns out this trope is about feeling attracted to trans* (of any kind) characters, not just finding out that the person you thought was female is physically male, so I guess it won't work.

Not sure about Gender Dissonance. That name would have to include the distaff counterpart too.

Also, should Gender Bender even be mentioned as an example? I thought that at least a physically male body was required. (Unless it's a genderswapped woman who still dresses as a woman... I guess...)

By and by, the article is really short. When the "compare" section is nearly as long as the description, it's not a good sign. And it doesn't even mention anywhere that the current title is a reference to Guilty Gear.

This trope is one of the most popular ones we have here...

The name itself is witty (a clone of Dropped a Bridge on Him and named after one of the most infamous examples of this) As well as its decently clear (Bridget being a girls name and "Him".)

I am on the fence, leaning Against because just renaming for the sake of renaming isnt a good idea.

A "force" that can be easily overlooked, in light of its objective problems. So Yeah had brought in almost just as many people as this page, and look what happened to that. The number of referrals doesn't automatically make a page immune.

Regardless, the point is still the same. Wicks and referrals don't prevent names or pages from being changed or outright deleted if they have clear problems.

Except they usually do prevent it. I've always agreed that this was a terrible name, but assumed it would have perpetual Grandfather Clause immunity because it has "a long tradition of existence to the TV Tropes community" and a gazillion wicks.

It is a pre-existing term and used outside the wiki as well as on it. It doesn't seem to have misuse and it's got a ton of inbounds. Those are the objective facts.

We don't lose the inbounds by renaming. There are enough problems here that there is a good chance a better name will even inprove the already good off site usage.

I don't really see any pressing reason to rename this, it's well established and whenever I've seen it used it is used correctly. Also the rename suggestion starts with "Dude" which (IMNSHO) was a hanging offence even back in the eighties and nineties when it was a popular word.

I don't see a problem with the name either, but we can at least come up with some decent redirects. All we've got right now is Dropped A Bridget On Her and Sexual Disorientation.

Well, that's just one hypothetical rename. I'm sure we can do better.

I don't think it's a pre-existing term. When you take us out of the picture, Google only gives 11,000 hits and most on the first page still reference TV Tropes.

It starts with dude to snowclone off of Dude Looks Like a Lady. Since the tropes are related, and all, snowcloning would be acceptable.

True, but redirect don't log inbounds and the Related page doesn't count inbounds from renamed pages. They may as well have disappeared.

Proof? We've already covered the unintuitive (but wildly popular) name, potentially Bad Snowclone, and Word of Mod angles. Anything else?

Just to let you all know there is another trope that is snowcloned off of this trope: Dropped A Widget On Him. That's right, a Chekhov's Pun of a Chekhov's Pun, making it a Chekhov's Pun^2. If we rename this trope we will probably have to rename that trope, because the title would make even less sense without this title as a reference.

Dropped A Widget On Him Has more issues than just its name....
