Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Spider-Man: Far From Home made $1.1 billion. If Broken Home matches it under the 50/50 deal, then Sony makes $550m off of it.

...the new film wasn't actually called Broken Home right?

Look I thought everyone was joking when they said the sequel to "Homecoming" would have "home" in the title. And then we got Far From Home.

The next film would inevitably deal with the news breaking about Peter's secret identity, and inevitably would have focused on how much this affects his home life.

Also, what Disney is interested in is franchises. Other than Spider-Man, Sony doesn't have many top-tier franchises that Disney would want to go after.

Sony actually has quite a bit of stuff that Disney might want other than Spider-Man: The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Jumanji, Stuart Little, Men in Black, Underworld, the Robert Langdon books, The Smurfs (via Peyo), Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Charlie's Angels, Bad Boys, 21 Jump Street, Resident Evil, and more.

Well, some of those haven't had a successful entry in years (The Smurfs, The Karate Kid, Underworld, Stuart Little), and others are redundant with franchises Disney already owns (Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs)

Fox was different. Fox had a large number of franchises that were not like anything Disney already owned, and many of those franchises were very successful. Aside from their Marvel character roster, they also had Avatar, Alien, Predator, Planet of the Apes, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Kingsmen, and many, many more. That fits in much more with Disney's strategy of buying up already-successful franchises.

[up][up][up]Based on the period from Slott’s run where he lost his Spider-Sense for a while and had to learn martial arts from Shang-Chi, ah, yes.

Honestly this news doesn’t upset me thaaaaat much. While I liked having Spidey in the MCU, I think he was best in Civil War. The solo Spidey movies were fun for me but kinda shallow. I am a little bummed because I think Feige was working toward gradually assembling the Sinister Six by the fourth movie.

On the bright side, there’s always the possibility of Josh Keaton’s Spectacular Spidey showing up in an ITSV sequel! Ok, probably not, but I can dream.

The colon was not misplaced, since a colon is most often used before writing an explanation or Long List.

Any chance this is going to end with Disney doing what they did to get the rights to the X-man back? Namely, buying Sony Pictures outright? I know I said that was unlikely before, but still, it's worth thinking about.

Little to none. While a massive company, Disney still spent a lot on Fox, and had to take on a significant amount of debt to do it.

Let's face it, this is less to do with Sony and more to do with the Disney monopoly wars. The hysteria, given likely the only real difference is Holland’s Spider-Man won’t interact with the Avengers, is ridiculous. Come back to me when Sony fires everyone associated with the franchise and hang on to the rights for spite.

Potentially allot can change with Sony only Spiderman, its not 100% clear that Holland would be able to complete the film with Sony, if his contract is with Disney/Marvel (they auditioned him and awarded him the role after all) they would have to offer him a separate contract, if he is with Sony- Holland could find a clause in his contract that allows him to exit if he doesn't want to do the following films w/out Marvel/Disney. Disney/Marvel could say, Spidey is yours but you can't use any of our elements, which means ANYTHING that ties to Tony can't be used....that would include Vulture and Mysterio, the Iron Spider and most of the related suits as they were all made with Tony's tech.

Also the original deal was for three solo Spider Films and three Marvel/Team Ups, presumably they wanted to add on to the deal but the contract wasn't expanded to include the 4th film. So Sony could force everybody to do the third film then Holland and Co could walk....forcing Sony into yet another reboot.

This is also assuming that Sony even WANTS to continue with Holland, they might want to do a straight re-boot. Bone Headed...but possible

They established clearly that Sony wants to keep going with Tom Holland.

But Holland might not be as reciprocal according to how his Instagram doesn't have Sony Pictures in his "following" list anymore.

EDIT: And it looks like Jon Watts is joining him too.

Exactly why more than likely a deal will be made over getting another actor while rebuilding faith in Sony only Spider Man films that aren't Spider Verse.

[up](x6)I thought Sony wanted Marvel Studios to go with Tom Holland as the webhead.

I'm still hoping for an eventual renewal that's beneficial to all parties. Until that happens, I'll wait.

Regarding the departure of Jon Watts (since the link goes to Deadline's article):

Sony is planning two more installments, though it is an open question whether those will include Jon Watts, director of the first two films guided creatively by Feige. Watts isn’t signed on for the next film and isn’t a certainty to be back as he is being heavily courted for other jobs. Could Sony find itself vying against Marvel for Watts’ future services as director?

I want to think this puts Sony in a worse spot in terms of buttering up good faith, but does it?
