Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They’ve sold all the Daredevil props today but the Luke Cage and Iron First stuff is still available until tomorrow. With the exception of the supersuits, most of the items generally sold for one third of their projected value, so it’s possible to snag a smaller prop if you’re willing to part with a few hundred.

So, looking at Iron Man 2, how far do you think other countries got in copying the Iron Man suit? Tony gave it 5-10 years, but what do you think?
See, this kind of thinking is why I think we need an Armor Wars movie. Plus, it could introduce Ironheart, too. Like, say Rhodey realizes that a bunch of Tony's plans for his Iron Man armors have been stolen and he goes on a mission to stop all of the people building Iron Man armors, but the first one he finds is a young girl who basically just reverse-engineered it all herself, so they team up alongside Toni Ho, the daughter of Ho Yinsen, who herself helps Pepper run the "RESCUE" division of Stark Enterprises. Ooh, and in the course of stopping the Iron Man armors, they figure out that it was AIM and their new leader, Ezekiel Stane, who stole the plans.

Swear Jar would have been neat, but it's already run its value up pretty high. Same with Shades' shades, but that was expected.

I thought of a way for Ironheart to make people even madder than at the comics version, which is just a dumb troll idea.

If she integrated slivers of Mjolnir into her armor.

It’s funny what sold well at the bid and what didn’t. Vanessa’s wedding dress didn’t get a lot of bids but the ones worn by her stunt doubles did. Karen Page’s ID cards went unexpectedly in the thousands while a thousand valued coffin sold for barely a hundred. Someone paid $200 for empty matchboxes and lighter fluid jugs. And Fisk’s white wedding suit with blood stains didn’t get any bids at all, but his painting covered in blood sold even better than the unblemished version.

Interesting interview with Jeph Loeb about Marvel TV and their upcoming shows.

Of interest:

DEADLINE: On the flip-side, under the same corporate umbrella, there’s going to be all these Disney+ shows, Scarlet Witch and Vision, Winter Soldier and Falcon, there’s a number of them, do you feel that there is a potential of too much Marvel?

LOEB: Well, first of all, I have to make something very clear, which is those are shows that are created and run and the responsibility of the motion picture studio. Secondly, Marvel Television will be doing shows with Disney+, we just haven’t announced what we’re going to do there.

DEADLINE: And when do you think we’re going to hear what Marvel TV’s Disney+ offerings are?

LOEB: When we’re ready.

And this:

We were talking to them, and they started scratching because when you look at the success that they’ve had with Castle Rock and the world of terror. Something that really interested us and interested them, and we always knew that we were going to do something with Ghost Rider, we were just waiting for the right place to put it.

Then we started having the same conversation, which was there is in the comic book world the Spirit of Vengeance, and they are this sort of unusual group of characters, which involve Ghost Rider, which involve Helstrom, which involve Helstrom’s sister, Anna. We suddenly saw that there were three or four shows that we could put together that we now refer to as Adventure into Fear.

Loeb refers to "three or four" shows they refer to as Adventure into Fear. We know of two shows: Ghost Rider and Helstrom. Adventure into Fear was a Marvel horror anthology that also included Man-Thing, so perhaps that's going to be a show, too? I wonder if they looked at DC Universe's Swamp Thing show to see how people would respond?

Other than that, the only other terror/horror show I can see them doing is Moon Knight and they might be waiting to see if they can get a great writer/showrunner, as opposed to rushing in like they did with, say, Iron Fist. Or they could possibly do a Werewolf by Night show.

The only ones I can't see them doing are a Morbius the Living Vampire show (owned and already being made into a movie by Sony) or a Blade show (Marvel Studios is the one that announced it, so they are probably going to make a movie).

EDIT: Marvel Spotlight is the one that first had stories for Ghost Rider, Son of Satan, Werewolf by Night, and the solo Moon Knight (who had already been introduced in the pages of WBN). So I totally guessing that Werewolf by Night and Moon Knight are the two other shows of Adventure into Fear.

You know, unless they genderflip someone, pretty much all these shows have male protagonists. So I kind of wish they would make an Elsa Bloodstone show. That would be awesome.

About the armours in IM 2, the deal is that the armour itself isn't the greatest puzzle, the Arc reactor is.

No one can really replicate that aside from Vanko because the physics behind it is basically centuries beyond most scientist.

Remember, the damn thing is powered by a freaking new element, who the hell can replicate that?

It's palm-sized nuclear reactor, and while other people can recreate something close to the Iron Man armour, no one can figure out how to power the damn thing.

I'll never get over how stupid the name "Werewolf By Night" is for a comic title.

I was going to suggest the idea of having the Zodiac as potential future villains for Ironheart, until I looked it up and learned that the comic Zodiac are basically nothing like what they are in the Iron Man anime, which was the version I was thinking of.

Zodiac in the comics has been a whole bunch of different things because they’re kinda goofy as originally established

So they could be reimagined to take inspiration from the anime

Since when does the MCU only takes elements from the original comics?

The new Spider-Man movies, for instance, take just as many cues from the 90's cartoon as it does from the comics, such as him never throwing a punch in Homecoming and him running out of webfluid in Far From Home, which happened so often in the cartoon you could make a drinking game out if it.

Not one that ever seems to connect, in any case.

Actually, let's call a spade a spade: Homecoming is just one long Humiliation Conga for the Webhead, I don't think there's a single action sequence that in some way he doesn't make a fool of himself.

Not that I'm complaining, that's why the movie is so damn good.

A bullet that doesn't even work.

They seemed to work in Luke Cage. I mean, until Luke's skin leveled up for no reason and they stopped working. But there was a time when they were the only convenient way to kill Luke Cage.

Judas Bullets are so stupid. It's a bullet with a power-drill attached so it can drill into the target, and then it explodes. That's the most 90's thing any MCU work has ever featured. [lol]

And then later in the season they had knock-off Judas Bullets that either drilled or exploded on impact, but never both. Lazy-ass bullets.
