Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

I can think of Valkyrie becoming the Queen of New Asgard. Drawing a blank on the other.
MJ is Mary Jane Watson, simply with a different name (but same initials). All the "she's an original character" stuff was a smokescreen so that people didn't guess who she was in the first film, but by now it's pretty dang obvious.
If you are going to ask Marvel to bring in "the real MJ" then you are saying you don't accept this MJ because...reasons. And those reasons are either really petty ("She's nothing like the comic book version" "She doesn't have red hair" etc) or, you know, the other thing. You know.
Yes, MJ isn't exactly like the comic book MJ. Neither is this Peter Parker — hell, this Peter Parker is a combination of the Ultimate Peter Parker and Miles Morales, but nobody is complaining about that. So, uh, let's all get over it, shall we?
MJ is MJ. The end.
Unless she is called Mary Jane Watson, then no, she is not Mary Jane.
But she is MJ since if the initials match.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I'm not yet ready to dismiss the theory that she's MJ using a fake name to hide from her abusive dad.
The MCU changes character's names all the time. Do you think the comic book version of Ghost is named Ava Starr? In the comics, Drax's real name was Arthur Douglas. Do you think that's his name in the MCU? Nope and nope.
Once again: MJ is MJ. Get over it.
By the way, this isn't even the only character in the Spider-Man franchise the movie changes: Ned is an In Name Only version of Ned Leeds and is obviously based on Ganke Lee.

I would be fine with that. It would be really easy to pull and none of the movies have ever dealt with that aspect of the character.
And I'm not fine with that either (MCU Spidey is the worst as far as adapting characters go imo).
I love Ganke and I would've loved to see him and Miles instead (thank God got Spiderverse eventually).

With regards to Mary Jane, should we get JJ Jameson and the Daily Bugle in future films, have Mary Jane be a Composite Character where she has Betty Brandt's position in the Bugle.
Personally I view see Michelle MJ as an Expy of Mary Jane MJ. She's not literally the MJ, but an MJ substitute meant to hearken back to the one known as Mary Jane in broad strokes. I don't consider her Mary Jane but she fills her spot sufficiently that we don't need to introduce the original either.

I was about to mention that I don't quite see the problem with the MJ debacle, but then I remembered that I despised the Mandarin stuff from IM 3, so I guess I can eat my words there.
Kaze ni Nare!Ghost was never a character's actual name, though, but a codename. And superhero/villain codenames get passed around to new individuals all the time. I mean, there have been how many Hobgoblins at this point?
"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoThere has only ever been one supervillain named Ghost in the comics, though, and he was completely different from Ava Starr.

Movie Ghost may as well be an original character at that point, and I'm kinda fine with that. It's not like they try to act as if she's anything similar to her namesake beyond the basic powerset.
Though now that she's better, her gaining her comics-self more comedic quirks for a return in say Thunderbolts would be welcome.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Another thing re: MJ. Given the criticism the MCU has gotten in the past for their handling of race and Victoria Alonso's promise of a more inclusive Phase 4 Michelle being booted out seems even less likely.
Michelle being booted out is such a peculiar fantasy to have I'm surprised anyone would even entertain it and expect to be taken seriously.
Welp, finished up Luke Cage season 1. Skipping right past Defenders since I've heard it's not up to snuff and I already spoiled much of it for myself.
Decent stuff overall. I rather liked Cottonmouth and Mariah, Diamondback...ehhhh. Judas Bullets were pretty silly. Back half prolly wasn't as strong as the front but I liked what I watched. Looking forward to watching through season 2. Already went and saw the first episode and Luke no longer having to worry about the J Bs and Bushmaster fucking slicing through some guy's head and eyes is not a bad way to start.
Self-serious autistic metalhead who goes by any pronouns. (avvie template source)I will probably shock people, but frankly I couldn't care less about the whole MJ thing. I never was a fan of Mary-Jane to begin with anyway (primarily because I was introduced to her by small moments of the 90s series and the terrible version in the Raimi trilogy) and the whole Love Interest thing never was the main appeal of Spider-Man for me. I still hate One More Day, but less for the marriage thing and more for basically cancelling years of continuity that had long been accepted by then. So frankly, Michelle could be MJ or not, I don't give a damn.
Well you forgot the My Dear but that was good paraphrasing.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."x4 - At this point getting rid of Michelle for a “proper” Mary Jane would be such a complete and utter mess that you would really need to be careful to pull it off with any sort of subtlety that wouldn’t seem like a middle finger towards Zendaya, which is why the idea is just not feasible in the least.
Michelle is MJ, and like everyone who hates Iris West in The Flash (2014), the audience is going to have to deal with it because they’re not bringing in a white redhead.

I do think something is going to go wrong in Peter / MJ's relationship, but only because the trailers for Far From Home have been so free in showing that it's going well. Unless the trailers really are showing us everything, something's going to go wrong and push that plot in an unexpected direction, and given that this is Peter Parker we're talking about, it could be anything.
Like, hell, she could be a Mysterio-Bot or Osborn's grand-niece or the missing Skrull or something. Or Peter could simply screw it up. Who knows?
I don't think they're going to bring in classic Mary Jane regardless, however.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. My only hope for MJ here is that she doesn't get the Gwen Stacy treatment of getting her neck snapped by accident.
It's been 3000 years…Wait wait, dial back, everyone: when was Riri confirmed to show up in the MCU?
Downey mentioned he wants her to succeed Iron Man.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
America Chavez and Riri Williams. And if you count Star Wars, Rose Tico.
