Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You know, that the movie is set in the 1990s is the one thing which bugs me.

The 1990s were awful!!! I hated the whole damn decade! Everything about it!!!!!

The 1990s were at least way better than the 1890s.

Hey, I was on the internet in the 90s. It's not a real Geo Cities website without an "under construction" animated GIF.

It's the decade that gave us Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Friends, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the good parts of Seinfeld and The Simpsons, and the Cartoon Network. How could it possibly suck? Is there some non-TV part of the decade or something?

Wasn't Clinton considered a pretty good President?

And before anyone says it, yes barring the affair.

Saturday mornings were still strong in the 90's.

Even though I'm way too old to be watching cartoons, I won't lie that I miss it.

That's the kind of cheesy 90s nostalgia I've been looking for, but until I see more of it in the film itself I'm probably going to give it a wait-and-see.

[up][up][up] That heavily depends on your politics, and I'm leaving it at that. I will say that most sane people agree that the reaction to his affair was at least a little overblown.

It's kind of funny, but the more I see them, the more my favorite thing about the Captain Marvel trailers is starting to become her friendship with Fury.

Also, Looney Tunes aired on television more frequently. Today, it's like they air on Tv once every few blue moons...

Power Rangers, Digimon, Johnny Quest, almost every thing on Cartoon Network made the 90s for me.

Also, Thick-Line Animation classics like Dexter's Laboratory. And shows like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Also, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, and Yu Yu Hakusho alongside Gargoyles and the start of the DCAU.

And of course, all the video games: Crash Bandicoot, FFVII, Metal Gear, Baldur's Gate, Thief II, to name a few.

T'was also, afaik, the last decade without some looming global threat, the Cold War having ended before it started and terrorism only being a thing after it ended.

So yeah, I'd say there's plenty to like.

Well, let's say that the 1990s were a very dark time in my life.

but it was also...the 1980s ended so hopeful and then we had war in the Balkans, the troubles in Northern Ireland escalated, Neonazis were burning refugee shelters out, there was still war in the middle east, overall, the hopes were crashed pretty fast. Meanwhile the American Media was full of those "uh, I am so unhappy because my life is so great" kind of stories, which found their conclusion in Fight Club (and yes, I HATE that movie).

And honestly, can nowadays anyone watch "Falling Down" without feeling uncomfortable about it? It is still beyond me how this movie was a success in the first place.

So...yeah, not into the 1990s AT ALL. It's the decade of wanker and whiners (no offense to anyone who was born in the 1990...I'm talking about a specific kind of young adults from that period).

Well, there's an alternate interpretation of Fight Club that might soften your opinion on that movie:

Many critics (specifically Rantasmo) have made the comparison of the Narrator's life to that of a closeted homosexual who desperately wants to be straight (Chuck Palahniuk himself is Gay). The Narrator feels a certain "emptiness" in his life which he fills by shamelessly pretending to be someone he isn't, and that catharsis is lost once someone forces him to acknowledge that he's living a lie. His resulting anger is the catalyst to the introduction/creation of Tyler Durden, who is everything the narrator wishes he could be: attractive, confident and very obviously heterosexual. Notice how all of the sex scenes with Marla are with the Tyler persona, while the Narrator finds her repulsive, and that they hold hands instead of kissing at the end. The ensuing chaos is similar to how self-destructive people who actively deny their true selves can become (maybe not on the level of national terrorism, but definitely easily angered and reactionary) and Tyler's "death" is the Narrator coming to terms with who he is.

[up] Nope, it doesn't. Because it sounds like an overinterpretation to me. And even if it weren't, that still wouldn't remove the whining over things the majority of people would be happy to have from the movie.

While I'm young enough not to remember the nineties, pick any time period and there's probably some good things about the pop culture and some awful stuff about the politics. Though of course they're not all equal.

[up][up] Yeah, every decade has its ups and downs, there has never been a completely good or bad decade. And keeping this somewhat on topic, the 80s were a great decade for comics, yeah, the dark age technically started around that time, but outside of Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, the shift hadnt yet completely taken over (plus, at least comics were sold outside of comic shops still). And even if it was to keep copyright, it was still pretty progressive to have a Black woman take the Captain Marvel moniker.

I'm pretty sure Marvel has its own opinion about which decade was the worst…

In any case, I wonder how much influence 1990s style action movies will have on Captain Marvel. I mean that was the time which due to Die Hard (yes, I know it was technically released in the 1980s) the action movies transitioned from over the top action to more gritty action.
