Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just saw Trump talking with Putin. Or, well, I saw someone saying that the discussion went well apparently, as it doesn't actually show their actual discussion. Well, Trump says alot, Putin says nothing. I mean, at this point, I think everyone can agree that Trump isn't a politician nor a president as much as he's an ascended joke, a clown.
Except this "clown" is in a position of great power and authority. He's dangerous. He's already caused a lot of damage that will take years if not decades to fix. And he's going to keep causing more damage.
Disgusted, but not surprisedExactly.
Also, that thing with the thieves stealing radioactive materials, holy shit, that sounds like some movie or something.
Sounds like something from a Coen Brothers' movie.
Disgusted, but not surprisedExcept there is no more Soviet Union- now they're the same style of white supremacists and oligarchs as the US has. That's what makes it so terrifying. The old USSR were never just or decent (anymore than we were/are) but they were our ideological opponents. Now every Republican is looking at them and wondering why they're opposed to tax cuts, racism, and vote suppression.
Oh they're not opposed to those dirty measures, they will publically speak out against it while making plans on how to effectively apply them to their state. Trump is the more honest one here, proudly proclaiming he prefers Russia's faux democracy to the western ideals of it.
Life is unfair...Honestly Trump has forgone the position of president. The dictator version of blackface clearly much prefers to be Putin's bitch as he seemingly sets out to harm America's interests and enforce the new Russian Empire if Soviet is not befitting. Seriously, Putin even admitted to helping Trump win and Trump was in support of a rigged election.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursOkay, Trump sucking up to Putin is one thing, but there's that and then there's supporting the 'Russian Empire'. (Which doesn't exist by the way.) No offense, but that's just the tinyist bit hyperbole. Which you seem to do a lot of around here.

Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundOn the nuclear material thing (even the large amounts of missing material), I wish media wouldn't play up the chance of terrorist nuclear bombs. You can't just rig up a nuclear device like that.
Make a horrendously dirty NORMAL explosive, sure. But even large explosions there are difficult.
Avatar SourceYeah, the case of the stolen radioactive materials isn't really going to keep me up at night. I mean, the people that stole it were probably your garden-variety petty thieves. What are they going to do with it? Snort it?
That stuff is only dangerous to anyone other than the people holding it in their hands without protection if it ends up in some very specific wrong hands, and it is way too hot to go actually looking for such a buyer.
My guess it's on the bottom of a river or lake somewhere.

Would it also be hyperbole to point out where Putin admitted to help Trump win the election?
If this is not a sign of Russia expanding their influence what would be? Even his most ardent of supporters have claimed Trump sold out. Why do some still cling to the idea he hasn't? Do they still take Trump's word over everyone else?

Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursIf you could point out the rule saying I'm not to post videos to help elaborate on posts then certainly I'll certainly abide by that rule.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursIf you're going to post Youtube videos, at least embed them instead of just posting the url.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAnd a short description is nice.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Enough radioactive material has been misplaced over time that if it was going to happen, it probably already should have.
Avatar SourceI regret we can't post images because I want to post an image of a suspected thief of the radioactive materials and have it be Doc Brown from Back to the Future. Suggesting that his claims it's for a science experiment be discounted.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I'm actually glad we can't post images, because that would lend itself to the kind of politicking by meme you sent on social media
Wait, since when was posting links to images here against the rules?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Links are fine, but you can't directly post pictures that show up in your post.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I think if you try you get an image saying "no hotlinking images"
The only Republican of note to take Trump's side over his latest BS is Rand Paul.

Regarding Afghanistan, frankly, our policy in that area has been incoherent even under Obama. I mean, US troops guarding opium fields that produce heroin? (No, converting them to medical morphine was not the answer for several reasons.)
We have no fucking idea what we're doing in that country.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.
