Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is irrelevant to Alabama, but...
The opening statements were drafted eloquently with care, in hopes that the conference committee would soon be there;
Hardworking Americans were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of bigger paychecks danced in their heads;
Following 41 committee hearings, member listening sessions, and legislation passed,
The time for tax reform is now, public support amassed. The nation’s capital on the breast of a new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of a fresh start to friends and exaggerated foes.
Then, to our wondering eyes should appear, A comprehensive tax overhaul by the end of the year. When, there on the 1986 tax code, there arose such a clatter, Many sprang from their desks to see what was the matter.
Away to their employers they flew like a flash, Hoping they’d soon go home with $1,182 more in cash. Now, Brady! Now, Nunes! Now, Roskam, Noem, and Black! On, Bishop! On Young! On, Upton and Shimkus—and the senators, the whole pack! To HC-5! To the conference committee meeting! To the congressional hall! Now negotiate away! Not for one American, but for all!
So tomorrow at 2 p.m., on speaker.gov/live, tune in, For the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act conference meeting, live-streamed from within;
When we’ll hear them exclaim, the representatives and senators fighting this fight: “More jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks to all, and to all a good night!”
I found this on Paul Ryan's Twitter account.

Personally I think that the lower white rural turnout is due to people not wanting to prove the ugly stereotypes of Deep Southerners correct.
...What. The. Fuck?!

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Well they're certainly trying.
Be grateful for that sense of shame. It's one of the things that separates us from the likes of Trump.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI mean, I guess I applaud him for the effort, at least.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonRe: Paul Ryan.
What.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Sad thing is, I'd still much prefer having Ryan as president over Trump or Pence, infuriatingly dense and weak willed Randroid that he is.
At the very least, he'd be a better role model when it comes to personal fitness.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThat Taxmas shit is pure Narm. I'm confused if it's supposed to be a joke or something.

What.
Seriously what the fuck is this? Is Paul Ryan also from Ted Cruz's homeworld?

That would require the GOP to have some sense of self-awareness and irony.

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.I wish it was a joke, but politicians, especially Republicans, have been incredibly cringy lately.

Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.The GOP doesn't have much of a sense of humor.
Come to think of it, how many actually talented conservative comedians are out there anyway?
Disgusted, but not surprised@Spartan What, you mean Calgary?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Cracked did a podcast on how it's impossible to be a conservative comedian these days.
I mean whatever Eldritch Hellscape that spawned Cruz.

The latest from 538:
Harry Enten HARRY ENTEN 9:46 PM It’s a waiting game now. We need returns from Jefferson, Madison, Mobile and Montgomery counties. That will slim Moore’s lead, but will it be enough to flip the margin in Moore’s favor? We’ll have to see.
Nate Silver NATE SILVER 9:44 PM A factor to watch — so far, 1.4 percent of the vote has gone to write-in candidates. Presumably that’s mostly from would-be Moore voters, as some prominent Alabama Republicans such as Sen. Richard Shelby said they wrote in a candidate instead of voting for Moore or Jones. That 1.4 percent could easily turn out to be larger than Jones’s margin of victory in the race, if Jones squeaks out a win.
And Just for Fun:
ETA: Jones is less than 2%/15K votes back on the latest update. So goddamn close...

I don't bite my nails and I don't usually drink, but this election is making me want to do both.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |And on the Paul Ryan...whatever that is, I'm pretty sure it barely fits the meter of the poem.
x5 Touche.

Jones has started closing the gap between himself and Moore. It just narrowed from 4.5% to less than 3%.
