Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well one issue I have with US sex laws is that they are typically:
- Fairly hypocritical: Child marriage and sex within such is legal (Example from California; note the "Unlawful sexual intercourse is an act of sexual intercourse accomplished with a person who is not the spouse of the perpetrator" but outside of it isn't.
- That they consider sex between people of comparable age (when the power imbalance, a major issue with child-adult relationships, does not exist) as the same level of bad as between child and adult. See again California's sex law, I can't find any "closed in age" exemption there.
- There is also a history of such laws being enforced in racist, sexist or homophobic fashion, typically in the South. I think Florida has had a number such issues.
Forgot how active this thread was...
The conversation branch started when someone else said "that's not how a democracy works."" The redditor's arguments were:
- It's not a democracy, it's a representative federal republic.
- (When I said it elects its leaders and is therefore democratic) No, that's wrong, and you are a typical dishonest liberal.
That was the extent of what he said.
Just ignore him.
Oh really when?Yeah, that guy's a moron. Can you vote for people to represent you? Then it's a democracy. End of story.
Not Three Laws compliant. So, I'm seeing on CNN that McMaster is defending Trump's tweets in the recent London attack. Wondering "What did he say this time, I popped over to his Twitter and saw him dealing with things in his usual way...
(Included are tweets that are terrorism specific)
Loser terrorists must be dealt with in a much tougher manner. The internet is their main recruitment tool which we must cut off & use better!
The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific-but stupidly, that would not be politically correct!
We have made more progress in the last nine months against ISIS than the Obama Administration has made in 8 years.Must be proactive & nasty!
... do we even know who did it yet?
Avatar SourceAlso, pretty sure any "progress" against ISIS was mostly them imploding and action from local efforts, with minimal US involvement. All the real US involvement was done during the Obama administration, which is showing effects now.
Most of the damage to ISIS has been done by the Russians.
Oh really when?Oh, well in that case, makes sense Trump would claim credit, since he seems to consider Russia an ally.
Nope - and err Trumpykins, how do you know that Scotland Yard had someone in their sights? That wasn't another piece of confidential information that you weren't supposed to reveal was it?
EDIT - Yup, the Met are fuming with regards to Trump's unhelpful tweets. May has rebuked him, and Bo Jo will apparently ask him to be more discreet in future. Bo Jo is also going to try and see if he can secure export rights to all the flying bacon that will result should he succeed in getting Trump to be more discreet.

And Iraqis/Kurds.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.", half of us don’t even pay attention to the things he does because we know that he has a plan and I don’t think for one second he’s ever gonna lose that base unless he does something really outrageous. You know, he’s kicking out the criminals. There’s less people coming in."
....I wonder what outragous mean to this people....
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"It's weird (well, it isn't, but it probably should be) that a lot of people don't seem to get that even if "All men talk like this/do things like this" is true, that doesn't make it good. And it's also incredibly insulting to the men who don't. And women too, since this woman is claiming all women are the same as well.

X4 Why the hell are the Met still giving the US information on suspects? You guys are starting to be a serious liability.
And oh I have to laugh at Boris being sent to ask someone to be more discreet, Trump's that bad.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranEesh, even Theresa May called out Trump over his tweets.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Note that article is false, it claims that the UK has had three other terrorist attacked this year, it's had four (all with at least one death). Manchester, London Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Finsbury Park.
Anyone want to guess which terrorist attack the article pretended didn't happen?
The one carried out against a mosque.
Holy fuck NBC, talk about opening siding with terrorists.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran"Even"? I mean, she's speaking out against a widely despised asshat at a time when she's desperate to be liked in her own country.
Calling out Trump is easy political points at a time when she desperately needs it.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. She rarely speaks out against Trump, she's terrified of angering him and destroying any chance of a trade deal with the US after Brexit, the US is one of the few allies we haven't pissed off yet.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTo be fair, you're one of the few allies we haven't pissed off yet, or at least not until Trump got on his twitter account today. That didn't last long, did it?
Theresa May has kind of been creating an image of never taking a moral stand on anything ever unless she's completely forced into it.
Not Three Laws compliant. My Google-fu is failing me with this one, but I recall a case from the mid-'00s in which a 13-year old girl had sex with an 11-year-old boy and got pregnant from it - and both were charged with Statutory Rape. It happened in the west-Midwest - Nevada or Utah, if I recall right, and it resulted in the State Supreme Court tossing out one conviction (the other was acquitted) on the grounds that, in a situation like that, they couldn't both be victim and victimizer.
Incidentally, while searching for any articles about that, I stumbled across one where the Supreme Court unanimously overturned a deportation order for a 20-year-old man who slept with his 16-year-old girlfriend. Guess how most articles (including HuffPo!) framed this.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Yeah. I think it's a daft idea to do that (the sex act in question, between people that young) but I am inclined to agree with the idea exposed in Swiss age of consent law that it's not within that law's remit. If memory serves other US states, Canada and Italy have such small age difference exemptions as well.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThis is one of those situations where while I think deporting the guy (as opposed to giving him a more appropriate slap on the wrist) would be wrong, I wouldn't exactly miss him if he did get shipped off.
Uh... wow, I got super 'd with that post.
Could you elaborate on some of the issues with US sex laws? sounds interesting.
