Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So all liberals are French?
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Car: the world, old guy: Trump supporters, lamp post: Trump and GOP.◊
Something also related to fine cheese and wine being associated with self absorbed liberal elites for some reason.

Inter arma enim silent legesthat was fantastic. He was so busy flipping the person off, he walked straight into that lamppost. Really this seems like a a metaphor for this whole situation though. So busy patting themselves on the back and flipping off the rest of us. They don't see the huge cliff, and they will drag the rest of us over too.
And the whole wine and cheese thing still sounds like a negative French Stereotype.

"it's all about the bigoted xenophobic nationalism."
and dont forget filling the quota of void stament like "he love america" because....he said so, aparently obama have the fault of not saying all the time "You are the best and cant do not wrong"
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"The people that form Trump's base aren't really the results-oriented, intensely technocratic types who would be concerned with the quality of legislation and the success in bringing it to fruition. Those people are generally Democrats, or at the very least independents. They like seeing the President validate, enable, and normalize their corrosive views because it affirms the self-worth of these generally brainless people. They like seeing Trump roll back protections for vulnerable people, the ill, the poor, racial minorities, and the sexually non-normative, out of hatred and pure spite at them and the politicians who represent them. They like seeing Trump alienate our allies and fellate our enemies because their eyes down extend past their own front yards and they're uncultured barbarians who, in general, would never be able to appreciate an international society unless it appealed to their lowest-common-denominator-driven worldview. Plus, whether they admit it or not, they share more in common with totalitarian politics than with Europe. They're not the people of the metropolitan hotbeds of multiculturalism, they're not the people of science, the people of art, the people of the universities, or even the people of the Church. They're the people of the village, the gated community, the gulag, the for-profit school, the grubbing evangelical ministry, the Klan rally, the meth lab. They were never going to hate Trump — he's the only guy in government right now who is as proudly degenerate as they are.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Some of them hate Trump. For not going far enough.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I know this is one blog who views the Accord as "just because you sign it doesn't mean you actually are going to really go through with following it". They did a comparison CEDAW act which the United States hasn't signed, but places like Saudi Arabia and North Korea have which one could say the complete opposite in the pillars of human rights.
In other words, these accords seem to not really be as strong as people say they are. And it really seems all about keeping up appearances. It seems with these accords it's not really about how you do your goals, but how to look outwardly moral on the political scene.
I think the question is that are there any strings tied in these treaties, and it's not always going to boil down to Obama hates it.
The full text of the agreement is right here if you want to read it. See for yourself if there are any strings attached.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonGoing off the topic of the Paris Accords to bring something up that I don't think anyone else here is talking about:
We still have nobody in charge of FEMA.
And an above-average hurricane season is on the horizon. (Link, scroll down to "'Above average' hurricane season starts without anyone running FEMA").
Trump's probably got at least one person who seriously believed the "FEMA death camps" thing "advising" him to ignore FEMA and starve it.
Not Three Laws compliant. How hard can it be to find another person who judged horse shows?
This is interesting: 13 Victories conservatives want by christmas Almost halfway there and guess how many he has accomplished. Go ahead, guess.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."At first glance Gorusch / the Supreme Court seems the only one, but I haven't followed some of those so I couldn't say for sure beyond the fact you're even asking means the number is probably low.

The "Defense of the First Amendment" thing is impressively missing the point. There's quite a large difference between true Free Speech and "I get to say whatever I want, but everyone else has to shut up and can't say anything that I don't completely agree with."
Insanely hypocritical to say the least.
Not Three Laws compliant.Pro-life advocates also seem to miss that no one likes abortions, it's just a matter of whether a woman should be forced to carry an unwanted baby to term or not.

Just when you think you get numb to Trump, he always, ALWAYS finds a way to surprise you.
New Survey coming this weekend! The only way Trump would surprise me would be if he actually became a decent POTUS and human being. Which would require supernatural intervention at this point.
Disgusted, but not surprisedIt makes sense if you think about it. Trump's biggest and only concern has always been his ratings, so asking a TV personality for their opinion on what his audience would like to hear is perfectly natural.

If a hurricane hits I guarantee trump and the GOP will spin it to be because of those evil libruls. No way will his base wake up.
So far, nothing what Trump did has truly surprised me. But what always surprised me and what will continue to surprise me is that he is actually getting away with it, and that even serious people who should see him for the conman and man-child he is keep expecting more of him.
@Link To The Future: hence why such people can and should be referred to as 'anti-choice', since however you feel about the issue, the people pushing that point have proven beyond any doubt they do not care about the life of the child or the mother-only that they can impose restrictions so the rest of the world does not offend their sensibilities.
In other news, Trump is considering invoking "Executive Privilege" in regards to Comey's forthcoming testimony, though pretty much everyone agrees that doing so would probably damage him worse than just letting Comey testify. But then, there's a Trope for that.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"It's at least partly wishful thinking. Nobody really wants to believe that the POTUS actually is just that awful.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI think at this point Trump knows he's in trouble. Either way, he'll basically be screwed, so he might as well screw himself even worse...
@Trump and Conservative Wishlist: So far, that's 2 (The Conservative Justice and the removal of the Clean River EO). Everything else has either failed to happen or he's personally disregarded (Him keeping the Dreamer Act basically negates all the other EO's he's been removing). Conservatives certainly don't seem to be happy with only 2 things, as their Approval of Trump has been going down...

We have a trope for that. Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys
All NASA accounts are agressively tweeting about climate change. See NASA climate.
Well, remember how Trump said that he was voted by Pittsburgh not Paris? Well the city of Pittsburgh proper did not actually vote for him. But i guess we can get some amusement out of it. (Not actually true as much as I want it to be though.)
