The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump flip flops on his own (dead) budget; wants to put more money into Healthcare. This is despite his Budget's massive cuts into Welfare Programs and Trumpcare also making massive cuts into Welfare Programs.

It just makes me think his Budget wasn't written by him, and was instead written by some Neo-Con. And considering this is Trump, that is most likely the case anyways.

The budget isn't written by Trump. There was an article a while ago saying exactly that, but I don't remember what its name was. It is written by Mick Mulvaney if memory serves, a Tea Partier.

I think the Tea Party has figured out by now that Trump has no idea what actually happens in government. For all we know, we could send him a carbon tax bill like only the progressive caucus would approve and he'd sign it with no comments. They probably think the same way, just with different political slant.

I generally find "small government" politics to be deeply immoral, and if a party that espoused that trash never emerged, America would be better for it.

[up] So-called "small government" advocates tend to be amazingly hypocritical too when it comes to appeasing the USA's religious fundie nutjobs.

They ought to just own up to being advocates for corporatism. Particularly Big Oil and the MIC.

No they are not.

First, hardcore fundies and hardcore small government people are not usually the same people. Second, there is a difference between a political compromise and hypocrisy. Third, the idea that upholding morals is the principal reason to have government does exist.

Sorry folks, but hypocrisy is often a matter of opinion and of how much weight one gives to which consideration. Exceedingly bad bludgeon argument, as it were.

[up] If it weren't for our backwards political system, they'd be in separate parties for sure, and perhaps not even in a coalition with each other if the center-right, centrist, and center-left had enough seats to form a government.

A few notes from today's https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2017/05/29/Day-130/ that I'm not certain have come up yet:

Trump is considering big changes at the White House in an effort to contain the escalating Russia investigation that threatens to consume his presidency. “Everything is in play,” an advisor said. Trump may bring back a trio of former campaign officials (Corey Lewandowski, David Bossie and David Urban) to handle communications and political duties related to the Russia investigation, and – shockingly – he’s even considering having lawyers vet his tweets.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-considers-major-changes-amid-escalating-russia-crisis/2017/05/27/44d1a016-4230-11e7-9869-bac8b446820a_story.html
https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-eyeing-white-house-shakeup-1495831679

NSA chief: “I would not be concerned” by backchannel communications with Russia. H.R. McMaster didn’t specifically comment on the controversy surrounding Kushner.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/27/politics/jared-kushner-russia-gary-cohn-hr-mcmaster/

The Senate Intelligence Committee wants all of Trump’s Russia-related documents, emails and phone records going back to his campaign’s launch in June 2015. It’s the first time that Trump’s official campaign structure has been drawn into the Senate committee’s ongoing bipartisan investigation.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/05/26/senate-intelligence-committee-requests-trump-campaign-documents/

The Trump campaign likely didn’t preserve digital documents. “You’d be giving us too much credit,” a former aide said. “The idea of document retention did not come up. The idea of some formal structure did not come up.” Failure to keep track of emails, messages and other records could expose Trump’s current and former aides to criminal charges down the line.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with that. I wouldn't want anyone to visit America as it is now anyway. Maybe in 4-8 years or so...

I feel like having some backchannel diplomacy with other countries is probably acceptable and in some cases preferable (like was discussed a few pages ago, sometimes you can't fly your jet directly to whoever you want to talk to). Of course, there's a huge difference between intelligence agencies talking to each other and the President of the United States (and apparently everyone else in the White House) being owned by Russia, so the NSA director can stuff it.

It's been fun.

[up] I don't think that it really qualifies as a backchannel when it basically means to do deals behind the back of everyone, the white house, the secret service, the foreign minister, on the turf of a foreign power. That sounds more like espionage to me.
