The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So Bachmann seems to be in the lead in Iowa, and whilst I know she's crazy, I was just trying to remember why. Apart from the ban on porn and gay marriage things, which are kind of nuts, but can be dismissed as Pandering to the Base. Was she the one who wanted to do weird things to the Constitution, or was that someone else?

What's precedent ever done for us?

[up] She also has said she wants to lower corporate taxes and would think about abolishing the minimum wage as well.

Ron Paul is...like a lot of madmen. Somewhat accurate view of the problem, totally distorted view of the solution.

Unfortunately, a genuine libertarian cannot expect support from either party. Neo-Confederates like Ron Paul are about as close as they come.

Bachmann is a another christian reconstructivist who thinks The Lion King is subliminal gay propaganda.

Alas, these wingnuts who used to be kept in the periphery are now in vogue. I suppose we're all fatalistic about democracy and want to restore traditional protestant values - none of which interests Bachmann obviously.

Why "alas?" To be a devil's advocate, what's wrong with the Republican Party committing political seppuku?

Bachmann will take the lead in the Republican party (assuming the Romneycans don't prove to be a powerful Silent Majority), and Obama will curb stomp her so hard that John Calvin will feel it in his grave. The Republicans will become ineffective, the Tea Party will disintegrate, and the Republicans will come up with a new game plan for 2016.

If Romney wins the primary, by contrast, the Tea Party will break down for a different reason. Romney's a lot like Obama; he's a technocrat without a lot of hardline ideological principles, and in fact nobody really knows where he stands half the time. If the Tea Party can't stop that, then it becomes plain as day that the Republican majority doesn't really care for the TP, and it'll be relegated to an interest bloc in Congress.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

not that that will happen, but fuck if I'm not gonna vote for the gay Jewish Republican cowboy political campaigner and shirt-ironing actor.

[up][up] Unfortunately, there is small possibility that Republican could win and America will have Bachmann as President.

the unemployment number is not good, and a lot of people will blame the president. a lot of people have very vague understanding of what president can or cannot do, its one of the weakness of presidential system.

Actually, it's more of a problem with the education system since a president is someone that can be pointed to as being "in charge" for a certain number of years and are present in small enough numbers that they can be memorized. It's worthless trivia, but it's on the education system.

Fight smart, not fair.

I wanted to strangle someone after I heard Bachmann's husband call gay people "barbarians"

He may as well just go out and say "Niggers aren't humans"

Its the same hateful bile shit that you expect to hear from the god damn KKK, not the fucking spouse of a politician.

Last I checked, her husband isn't running for president; we'd all be screwed if our efforts to run were based on how our relatives acted.

A relative is different from spouse. If you are not in substantial agreement with your spouse on such issues, then you should probably consider a divorce.

ESPECIALLY if you are a politician.

You think Obama's numbers would go up if Michelle starting going around calling hispanic people wetbacks?

I think we've well established that a Republican's image is irrelevant. Only liberals have to worry about that stuff.

A Republican's image is very relevant, just in different ways.

For example, if it gets out that you care out uninsured poor people, that's practically a death sentence.

Religion and hard work for the rural areas, low taxes and deregulation for urban, religion and cutting funding and schools for the suburbans.

That seems to be the general plan they have.

Protestant...? Weren't they more liberal than the Catholics?

Midgetsnowman Since: Jan, 2010

The protestants have backed a few "liberal" causes in the past, but considering even the original movement came out of getting rid of catholic regulations in favor of more literal readings of the Bible..they've always kinda been firmly planted in conservatisvism.

I mean, they even invented the Revival in the 1700s-1800's out of a reactionary fear that people were moving away from jesus and needed to be fire and brimstoned back into fear of god.
