Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I’d rather stick to reality and not go into speculation that’s seems to be backed up by something as rather lacking in concrete probability such as “they’re evil and bold”, if you don’t mind my rudeness.
What could make this slightly enticing? What is the actual benefit to go forward with the threat, even by their mindset? Have they even made any real moves to look like they’d go ahead with it?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. The Republicans are getting fanatical enough that they might be willing to destroy the economy if they could blame the Democrats for it for the next fifty years.
Are the republicans explicitly needed to prevent this?
Democrats can pass a debt ceiling increase without Republicans, but it requires unanimity. I can't see any of the so-called moderates defecting on this one.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I've said it before but this year has made me hate the "moderates" almost as much as the republicans. Even with this they will probably stick to their guns and make life difficult for everyone for no good reason.
Manchin's still out there whining about the debt and inflation, things he and almost every other politician only care about when it's spending money on poor people.

I've heard others say that Manchin will fold if all the other democrats vote on somethw as he apparently hates being the "deciding vote", let's hope that's true.

It's been fun.Thoughts and prayers
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyYou may also wonder that a debt ceiling that you can raise every time you reach it, without any apparent consequences, seems rather pointless.
And you'd be right. What's more, plenty of other countries seem to be doing fine without one, and would be appalled at the idea of the government shutting down over something so trivial.
Optimism is a duty. The fact she hoped she would get COVID-19 makes me even less sympathetic.
Especially since even now she is still spreading anti-vaxxer bullshit.
And to add insult to injury, the one effective treatment she is actually taking is a really expensive one that is funded by taxpayers.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting Agency
Remember we can post images now, like so:
Optimism is a duty.
And now they officially admit that the drone strike that supposedly was aimed at ISIS only killed a bunch of civilians

Can we get like any accountability for this? Please?

Watch SymphogearThe accountability is that we are hearing about it and the mistake was acknowledged. It's a start. Not to pick at an obvious point, but we wouldn't have gotten even this small amount of transparency under Bush or Trump. More is needed, of course.
I doubt we are ever going to get to the point where such "mistakes" carry criminal consequences, but we can at least push for more of that transparency.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yet more proof that America is only competent when it is hurting people, and even that is a crapshoot.
When America comes home to find his house robbed, he declares in a righteous voice, "Someone will pay for this." He then punches the person standing next to him in the face. Satisfied that justice has been served, he goes inside the empty house and replaces nothing.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.The least they could do is give that family 50 million dollars or something. They just wiped out like an entire family there.
Optimism is a duty.Considering it took six years and two pushes by Jon Stewart to get Congress to pass the Zadroga Act, I'm not holding my breath.
So anything of note happening at the DC rally? I sure hope not- hopefully it ends up being a big old flop.
Of course, their playbook for a long time has been "stupid and evil", so saying anything is unthinkable for them at this point sounds pretty naive.
Wake me up at your own risk.
