Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And people will remember idiocy as well. For example, Sanders' absurd demands for a punitive wealth tax are associated by many with the Democratic Party, and will drive some of them away.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Bluntly, I find it difficult to imagine anyone who would be voting Democrat who doesn't think that the wealthy have absurdly plotted through criminal means these past few years. Just look at the Covid relief for big business.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I think Fighteer is more conflating his personal opinion on wealth taxes with the general opinion.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Nah, I've been following the fun on Twitter. Although some of those people may just be Republicans looking for an excuse.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Are we treating Twitter as indicative of public opinion now?
Yeah, I could cite twitter for literally any candidate to the Right of Mike Gravel as getting backlash. For that matter, anyone to the Left of him too.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerTrump has signed an EO extending unemployment benefits and adding a payroll tax deferment.
The unemployment benefit has been lowered to $400 and your state will now be picking up 25% of the tab.
"Two additional orders put a freeze on evictions in federal housing and pause student loan payments through the end of the year."
I'd say he's certainly broadly likable to the average voter at least.
I'm not sure Trump has the legal authority to do that.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"But will the Democrats be willing to challenge a benefits EO, even if its insufficient garbage? The optics are...dicey.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It's an interesting ploy, but Congress has the exclusive right to spend money. Where is Trump getting it from?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Nah you have states challenge the billing of it after the fact when Trump tries to make them pay.
You use this as a propaganda win, shouting about how Trump had to override Mitch via EO because Trump ant control his own party.

Basically, Trump seemes to have started a fight on the phone with one of the GOP cash whales <.< Confusion to the enemy, I hope.

"You can reply to this Message!"There are lots of ideologues who will surely be willing to sue Trump for this. Even conservative ones who think Trump is squandering money or who think that leaving such an order unchallenged will open the door for Democratic presidents to do the same.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHe doesn't have the legal right to do this.
So we let Republicans block Trump's attempt to force unemployment aid through illegally? That's several layers worth of hilarious.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"This actually may be the one time Trump has done anything remotely Presidential.
Its illegal as fuck but its better than the GOP, which is the new lowest of the low.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. That's sadly no longer true; the Supreme Court has given the Presidency the ability to take money from Departments and spend it any way they please. It's how Trump is financing the Wall along Mexico; he's literally taking Money from Departments (specifically Defense and Treasury) and putting it into that stupid Wall.
x2 The only Republicans willing to challenge Trump on anything are the ones who are already abandoning the party. They may grumble and groan about Budgets and Spending, but if their Dear God-in-Flesh Trump does it it's the most sacred thing in the world. If a Republican actually tried to stick to the "Fiscal Conservative" Bull they peddle, they're immediately ostracized and declared traitors (like Flake, McCain, Romney, and others).
I hate to say it, but as much as I hate this obvious power grab, I think we're gonna have to let Trump have it; trying to kill an Executive Order that helps all Americans will be political suicide for any side that does it, but there's no way it'll help Trump enough for him to win in November. Then the 2021-2023 Congress can reassert its authority over Financing, and make most of Trump's Executive Order (obviously excluding the Payroll Tax Deferment) the actual law of the land.
EDIT: Looking into the EO further, it appears that it's not as good as it seems: It's only a 400$ extension, and it forces all states to pay 25% of it. Yeah, this Executive Order isn't worth keeping; I say we challenge it to hell.

I'm just noting Trump's done EO's that are purely facetious or meaningless in the past.
As someone who is on SSI, can someone help me out here: does the "payroll tax cut" still equal gutting of Social Security?
I guess, after a night of pillaging and raping, a Viking wants a little something to go with his cocoa. It's technically a deferment: Where those who have to pay will pay later instead of sooner. So no, this won't hurt SSI.
I mean, if you're fine with destroying the hard-set rules of the Constitution and allowing the President to eventually become a Dictator with all the power, then there would be no reason to go against it.

I don't see any reason to challenge it. I also don't see any reason not to push the original bill through while this makes sure people aren't eating their neighbors in the meantime.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Also, how likely is this to help Trump's re-election chances?

A major achievement will often rally your base and donors regardless of the popularity of the achievement with the general public.
