Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This was probably overshadowed by Trump's rally in Oklahoma, but Trump will officially accept the GOP nomination in Jacksonville, Florida on the 60th anniversary of the city's "Ax Handle Sunday" where the KKK led a mob to beat civil rights sit-ins with bats and ax handles.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."At this point, the GOP's impeccably awful timing on things just has to be intentional.
Somebody once told me the world was macaroni, I took a bite out of a treeMaybe not the GOP but Trump.
Trump's dad was part of the KKK. He is sincerely a "the kind of racist that people who don't think they're racists think racists must be." Damn Yankeeness aside.

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen. So I've read that Booker was doing better in vs. McConnell polls than McGrath was. So if Mitch wins, it probably won't be because Booker got the nomination instead of McGrath
Its stupid logic anyway.
Despite my love of Bernie, Bernie loss. It's Insane Troll Logic to believe that the loser will do better against his partys opponent.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I mean, it's not totally absurd given that the people who vote in the Democratic Primary are not necessarily the same people who vote in the general election. Basically the idea is "he is more popular outside of registered Democrats."
There's never been any actual data suggesting that. Heck, there was one study pointing out that Sanders' favorable polling against Trump heavily relied on the youth vote. And well, the youth vote is not a reliable bloc.
Sanders would have needed a spike in the youth vote even higher than the spike in the black vote when Obama was running for President.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYes, as fanatical a Bernie bro as I am, the simple fact was the people spoke.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I didn't say it was true, just that it's not totally irrational. It is not logically inconsistent for it to be true.

@Scuba Wolf: Unfortunately, it's not that simple. While Mitch is hated, he has a diehard voter base and the ability to massively disenfranchise Democratic voters in Kentucky. (Let's assume, barring evidence, that he isn't getting ghosts to vote for him too.)
He can lose, but he can win too.
The assumption of rural states being poor is mostly true but there's a bunch of rich white suburbs too who are very scared of brown people. If you reduce 3500 polling stations to 200 and 198 of those are in those subburbs....well, that's interesting.
Because then people have to go to them to vote.
I found out Ashland lost most of its polling stations particularly. Coincidentally it was instrumental for voting for Beshear along with Louisville and Lexington.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. At the risk of repeating myself, the US needs federal rules about the number of polling stations relative to registered voters (preferably with a minimum number per town or county) and their opening hours.
And even is "states' rights" get in the way, they should be able to do it for federal elections.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."M84 : Yes which is why I say the Dems should play with the deck of cards they received and not the one they fantasize about now.

Liberty, equity, autonomy ! Proud neoliberal cuckservative whore ! Now for sale !Its why I'm voting by mail.
Because Trump was right. It IS the way to counteract GOP attempts to keep me from voting.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Regarding Mississippi changing their flag, are there any similar movements to change the flags of Georgia and Arkansas?
Because they're both also Confederate references, they're just not as overt/commonly known ones.
Then again, don't be surprised if your ballot and others somehow get "lost" in the mail.
From CNN: Iran issues arrest warrant for Trump over drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani.
Xbox/PlayStation: IndiGhost77 | on semi-hiatus...wait, what does that entail, exactly?
Them making a big public stunt out of how they think Trump is a criminal.
The warrant won’t be considered valid by anyone beyond maybe a few Iranian allies, it’s just a PR move.

New theme music also a boxEven if he went to Iran, they couldn't arrest him because he has diplomatic immunity. It's a stunt. Too bad John Bolton isn't still National Security Adviser: he'd use this to push for a declaration of war.
Ha, good one.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I should note the article says: (bolded text is mine)
Iran has issued an arrest warrant for US President Donald Trump over the drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in January, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Monday.
Trump is one of 36 people Iran has issued arrest warrants for in relation to the death of Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), according to Fars, but the Tehran attorney general Ali Alqasi Mehr said Trump was at the top of the list.
Mehr claimed Trump would be prosecuted as soon as he stands down presidency after his term ends, Fars reported.
Unfortunately, Mitch did get more votes than he should.
