Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And this is stupider - Jared Kushner is under investigation for using unsecured means of communication for official business, including a personal email address and fucking WhatsApp!
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"That's unsurprising since Wats App is genuinely considered 'secure' forgetting of course that they're owned by Facebook

New theme music also a boxYeah no, the "Israel lobby" does not have intrinsic power, it relies on a large part of the American public supporting Israel. Once unconditional support for Israel becomes more and more partisan it's going to become more viable for the Democratic Party to criticize or censure Israel.
Furthermore the "Israel Lobby" didn't pass anything, it was pro-Israel politicians who answered to pro-Israel constituencies that did that. Lobbying plays a role but this common view of reducing everything around Israel to lobbying makes me rather uncomfortable.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -Hylarnyeah I can see why,i apologise
New theme music also a boxIt's fine, I just wanted to point that out
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnA judge has ruled against Scott Walker and the Republican legislature of Wisconsin that had stripped much of the power of the new Democratic governor.
Said governor is using his restored powers to pull out of the anti health care lawsuit and cancel all the last minute appointees Walker made.
Meanwhile the American ambassador is really p... off the German Government
They are incorrect, though, technically they could expel them. But why bother? The replacement won't be any better. In any case, this guy is basically having a "good" time in Germany on the US taxpayers dime acting like an a-hole without getting any actual work done.
I wish Walker all the best with his delousing.
The fruit baskets are going to have to be so big, they'll need delivering by train haulage. :/
Pew: Republicans and Democrats Grow Even Further Apart in Views of Israel, Palestinians
...
Democrats are divided in views of the Middle East conflict: Currently, 27% of Democrats say they sympathize more with Israel, while 25% say they sympathize more with the Palestinians; another 23% say they sympathize with neither or both sides and one-quarter (25%) say they don’t know.

So actual good news from Wisconsin for a change. Are the Republicans fighting it, or is there nothing they can do?
They can still appeal.
They have promised to appeal, but that's about all they can do for now.
Man, forget fruit baskets. Remember how France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the US way back in the day? We're basically gonna have to ship out a Statue of "We Promise We Won't Fuck Up This Badly Again" to all our allies.
So according to the article linked to by Soban here, support for Israel has become a partisan issue already.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Kinda, but non-support for Israel is not the same thing as supporting the other actors in the area. Flawed as it is, Israel is leagues beyond it's neighbors or likely successor governments if it disappeared.
Literally no one here has said Israel should disappear. I’m pretty sure prevailing opinion is that Netanyahu is awful and the Israeli government/military needs to stop screwing over/killing Palestinians and minorities, possibly a two state solution.

I'm in favor of the two-state solution and that's as much as I'll say on the subject.
Regarding Kushner and Ivanka's use of f*cking WhatsApp for official government business, this is my favorite part of the story. Not from the link above but the New York Times article on the topic:
Like. At what point while you're filling up an email folder with screenshots of your WhatsApp messages do you stop and go, "Maybe this isn't how I'm supposed to internet."
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Apparently not after weeks if doing it.
I feel like the two state solution is the only sensible one and we were on our way there until reactionary politicians fucked it up.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters."On our way there" is the arguable part.
Not to drag the subject but Israel had been illegally occupying half of Jerusalem for decades by the time Trump got into office.
"On the way" seems like a very rose-tinted view of the situation back then.
That is stupid.
