The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Tobias: So she campaigned for a democratic candidate in the primaries in Kansas... Again, is the rest of the site seeing something I'm not? If it's because of her being native american, then I should remind you what matters are the issues.

Oh come ON, Theresa. At this point you should not be remotely surprised when Trump completely ignores anything you say to take potshots at things he connects with you during the random word association going on inside his head, let alone "shaken".

That was written as a response to the British left having almost as many communist parties as communists, all of which hated each other more than the Tories. The Democrats look extremely cohesive compared to Labour right now, count your blessings.

The UK government, please. Very few of the British people are delusional enough to assume Trump has our best interests anywhere close to mind, it's just that our government is currently being ran by Randroids.

Okay, the question here was not, "Is she a bad person?" The question here was, "Is she a Sanders-style Democrat?"

Campaigning for Sanders, being endorsed by Sanders in turn, and then going on a campaign trail with Sanders to push more Sanders-style Democrats in the primaries do not in and of themselves make her evil or whatever. But they do pretty firmly stand out as instances of her being Sanders-esque. Y'know. Because she and Sanders have been peas in a pod for literally her entire political career.

And it's through that lens that we view things like her protesting Nancy Pelosi, of all people, a week after being elected. It's a total Sanders move. What we know about Sanders and what we've seen of her embracing his ideology with open arms informs on our reading of his protege.

If nothing else, let's hope she's more productive on the legislative front than Sanders is.

Well, she's picking needless fights with her colleagues over things they already agree with just to look cool for her base, and she hasn't even been sworn in yet. So that's probably a fool's hope.

She's poised to be another populist, for all that entails.

To shift the subject; Melania Trump appeared to be the decisive factor in getting one of Bolton's aides and allies fired. Said deputy, Mira Ricardel, has a history of lying about her political enemies (Mathis and Kelly to start with), blocking hirings of (non-political, defense) prospective staff because they've worked with Democratic or even other Republican admins, and getting into shouting matches with superiors and bullying subordinates. The tipping point seemed to be when she turned her ire towards Melania's staff and then lied about it, and since Trump might actually listen to his wife...she's history.

Sad that Melania, who is depraved indifference personified, can still legitimately come out looking better than the nutbar ideologues that stalk the Orange House.

There's already several laws passed that would face challenges, so next year would be a good bet.

Someone has to challenge it and the challenge has to not be shot down at a lower court first.

It'll take years and years even if it gets challenged tomorrow.

Besides, even if it gets overturned that won't be the equivalent to a countrywide abortion ban. In places where it is legal (most blue states?) it stays legal, only these which have laws against it on the books would criminalize it.

An interesting discussion about the midterm election

For now the SC are trying to stay out of the limelight after the dumpster fire that was the Kavaugnh hearings, having a docket of mostly low profile cases. Even when they get a new docket late next year though, someone still needs to challenge abortion before the SC can take it on. Which could take only who knows how long.

Whatever happened to that one case related to State/Federal Double Jeopardy that was going to be heard after Kavanaugh's confirmation? I remember it being a big deal about one of the reasons they were rushing Kavanaugh through as quick as they could.

Side note: a TV in my work cafeteria with Fox News on is saying Kevin McCarthy had been elected as House Monitority Leader, while McConnell has been reelected Senate Majority Leader and Chuck Schumer remains Senate Minority Leader.

They can make those votes now? I would've thought that would be the kind of the thing that would decided closer to when the new Congress takes over. Though the only interesting part is gonna be whether or not Pelosi keeps her position.

Some Dems are making noise about not supporting her but as yet, no one's announced an actual challenge.

I suppose that's a good thing, at least. A Tea Party/Freedom Caucus leader is the last thing anyone wants.

That said, the Tea Party is likely to be empowered within the rump House Republican ranks, due to moderates retiring or losing to Democrats.

That also means that the future House faction leaders will both come from the same state. It also looks like some Tea Partiers are being pushed for key committees.

Welp, Trump has officially gone full Alex Jones. He's claiming that Democrats are committing voter fraud by voting, going back to the car, changing clothes, and voting again.

He's also repeating that head-scratching claim that you need an ID to buy groceries. I don't know what grocery store you shop at...

Imca (Veteran)
#261795: Nov 14th 2018 at 1:01:05 PM

Its a stupid claim, but given that you do need an ID to buy Superglue, Spray Paint, Cold Medicine, and the like.... you know because of the war on drugs I am starting to wonder if its related to that?

Also here in New York, you can add Laser Pointers, Box Cutters, and Etching materials to that list, all things he would have had to deal with in business.

I mean, I don't think I have heard many statments more out of touch with the general public, but I am wondering if this is where it is coming from?

Being IDed for something stupid, and then extrapolating it out to mean that everything requires an ID now not just that item is the kind of stupidity I would expect from him.

Even more likey then, sent out undocumented help(hypocrtit and how would he say no to not having to pay minimum, or compensation) to go get laser pointers, they come back saying they can't because they need an ID... Trump now thinks all groceries need ID
