Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes, I read her policies and was unimpressed. Mind you, the whole thing about Senator Clinton is that it doesn't matter if her policies were lukewarm compared to what I think America needs as they were...
Getting a coupon at Applebees vs. getting kicked in the nuts repeatedly then set on fire.
I don't like Applebees but it's not really a choice.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Applebees is nice actually.
I got no problem with Applebee’s either, though I prefer TGIF.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI have never had Applebees but I've always liked the name.

Kobach has won the Republican primary for Kansas governor.
Ethan Sonneborn: 14-year-old boy uses legal quirk to run for Vermont governor
"I think Vermonters should take me seriously because I have practical progressive ideas, and I happen to be 14, not the other way around," Sonneborn said in a recent televised gubernatorial forum. "I think that my message and my platform transcend age."
The Vermont Constitution doesn't have an age requirement for people seeking the state's highest office beyond having lived in the state for four years before the election. Sonneborn qualifies.
That apparent oversight by the state's founders more than 225 years ago was enough to encourage the politically precocious teen to collect the signatures needed to place him on the primary ballot.
He said he's always been fascinated with the concept of building coalitions. Robert F. Kennedy was the politician who most embodies that for him.
"It's on us to build our own future," Sonneborn told The Washington Post last week. "You've got to get involved, you've got to vote, you've got to knock on doors. It's how we're going to make the changes we want to see in the state, in this country, in this world. When we get involved, we make our democracy stronger."
Sonneborn said his decision to run grew out of his frustration with state and national politics. The teen learned he could, and then decided to do so as a gut reaction to clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, one year ago.
"I think if I can get one person who wasn't involved in the political process before involved now, then my campaign will have been a success," he said.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Huh, I've never heard of that but there are four near me and they're all highly rated.
I'll try it sometime
Hmm, I don't know anything about him but he's a Republican so I'm sure he's some kind of awful.
And after spending a few seconds researching him it seems that Slate despises him.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnI wish Sonneborn luck in this endeavor, but I can't help but feel like Vermont is going to wind up with an Obvious Rule Patch should he fail (or even should he succeed)

I don't, the idea of a fourteen year old holding office is horrifying and farcical.
Even Idiocracy didn't imagine that future.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnThe Republican incumbent is already looking into it.
Another article elsewhere (I can't find it right now) said that Sonneborn's primary aim is to get young people who are of voting age politically active. That's why he's measuring his success by whether or not he can get people active who were previously disengaged.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Good for him, still shouldn't run for office. He's obviously principled and unusually engaged for his age but that just means that he should volunteer with the local party instead of running.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIs he the only possible democrat?
No, there are others in the primary. So far, the Democratic front-runner is Christine Hallquist, who, if elected, would be the first transgender governor.
@Fourthspartan 56 Kobach was the head of Trump's voter suppression fraud panel which has since been disbanded.

I would imagine he'd be more of a figurehead and let his running mate do the actual governing. Not sure if that's better or worse.

There is one right across the river.... but.... that's New Jersey.
I personally think he's done the right thing to get his message out the door.
It's easy to ignore the message if the kid says he's campaigning ob behalf of a typical Democratic representative. Kids have done that plenty of times and the press doesn't pay any attention. However, this act has made the press broadcast his message.
He doesn't expect to win, but he thinks he can do just well enough to inspire people to get out and active. If that's your message, you need to do something dramatic to get the attention so that message can be heard.
I don't think anyone realistically wants a fourteen year old to win, and I don't think he realistically expects to win. But, by taking the process seriously, putting together actual policy options and getting people talking about it, he's already doing more than most people can do by knocking doors on behalf of a different person.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I suppose the potential silver lining to Kobach being the Republican nominee for governor is that he is such a godawful trashfire that it just might motivate the turnout to beat him.
The downside, of course, is that if he wins Kansas is guaranteed to absolutely fucked even more than it is already.
This is extremely compelling but... I just don't know. Running for office in my view is an almost sacred thing, I just can't condone someone grossly unfit running even if it's just a message.
Yeah I call it the "Donald Trump Effect" a godawful candidate is nice in that it makes it easier to beat them but the fact that they have a chance at winning makes it rather wretched.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnApplebees used to be a favorite of mine til they grossly lowered the quality of their steaks to save money.
And then suddenly people hated their steaks.
Shock.
Then they tried to fix it.
To mixed results.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. The defense in the Manafort trial rest their case without even offering any witnesses or evidence. This is alarming. It's a show of extreme confidence on their part that the prosecution has failed to provide condemning proof of Manafort's crimes, and therefore that nothing more needs to be said.
If the jury comes back with a Not Guilty verdict for Manafort, he'll still have another trial in September for money laundering and lobbying as a foreign agent without registering as one. But it's not going to be a good look for the Mueller investigation if one of our star arrests is exonerated in his first trial.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Or Mueller's team may have provided such a damning case that the defense feels actually mounting a defense would be futile. They may even be trying to make a plea deal.

They could be banking on a pardon from Trump
Oh really when? This means they proceed directly to closing arguments, with no additional evidence.
Since some of you asked, this is not an unusual move. Typically in a white collar case, the defense calls no witnesses or just a few.
No it doesn't, I don't like Sanders but Our Revolution is not inherently objectionable and can (should) endorse good candidates.
