First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.

With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.

First, a few starter questions.

  • How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
  • Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
    • Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
  • Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
  • Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?

Also, a personal question from me.

  • Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

I was amused with the "Earth is the melting pot of the universe" because, well, everything was literally melting while Hell was blending in with Earth.

I mean sure if you ignore the fact that "melting pot" is traditionally used to describe the United States and its nominally welcoming nature to immigrants. Thus I feel fairly comfortable assuming that they were making an immigrant joke first and foremost. There isn't really any good reason to assume otherwise.

I think once the game actually comes out, the alt-right are going to become far less charitable towards it. Remember, its being published (albeit not developed) by the same company who was responsible for the last two Wolfenstein games.

I doubt it, they were unhappy about Wolfenstein because it involved fighting fascists. Doom will just be fighting Demons and thus they can just imagine the Demons are Muslims if they really wanted to.

There just isn't any reason for them to be offended.

I wouldn't be so sure, Doo M Eternal isn't even yet and for the Doom Slayer to get the Argent Sword, he needs to take it from Samuel Hayden first, so the whole corporate bastards are probably going to be a part of Doo M Eternal story.

I'm willing to throw a saving guess for Bethesda and say they really didn't think through with those jokes having that much repercussion for the Alt-Reichers, so far the whole manufactured controversy tells more about the Alt-Reich than the people they are complaining about.

On the bright side it opened up for this one Remember Nazi can be an offensive term, refer to them as alt-right instead.

Yes and corporate evil was a theme in the Doom 2016 too, and that didn't offend the alt-right because they don't have any specific ideological sympathies for corporations.

Hence why I don't really see any reason for them to be offended now.

Sure, for now it's just one (ish) bad joke.

We'll see if there are more like it once the game comes out fully, hopefully there are not.

I thought the person who got the hairstyle did have a history is questionable acts.
Yes, but the argument being given seemed much more general. In tandem with her other acts, yes she's questionable - but the hairstyle alone, if done by someone else, should that still be questionable?
Brown told internal investigators that he “believed the statement was supported by statistics and was not biased,” according to the review, which was obtained by WCPO in Cincinnati.
Yeah, this makes it all A-okay, let's waive the investigation and put her back on the street.

There is also people complaining about minorities being in the game even though WW 2 actually had a lot of minorities fighting for America, particularly during D-Day.

Every one else too, the Kings African Rifles kicked our asses in Burma.... Then the russians had the night witches, Canada had a whole detachment of lady soldiers... then there is "The lady of death" Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the Tuskegee Airmen, or hell even

I mean fuck, the US Amy training video for WWII even had to explain "Treat the Negrosnote  and Women well over seas because they don't have the same hierarchy, and they may very well out rank you"

A whole 10 minute segment on treating the Black officers in Europe just like the White ones.

They claim "Historical accuracy", but the thing is there version is the inaccurate one.

Historical accuracy is something that goes along with the advances of society so I don’t have much of a problem with minorities in historical periods if the research and the epoch makes them plausible.

AFP released a piece on Osaka after she beat Serena. As such, it also highlights her family history:

TOKYO (AP) — Naomi Osaka's halting Japanese, her manners - she bowed and apologized after beating Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final - and her simple charm have swelled national pride in Japan and eclipsed many questions about her mixed-race parentage in a famously insular country.

Two days after becoming the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam tennis title, Osaka is still filling the front pages of the country's three major daily newspapers and leads the discussions on talk shows.

The perspective from Japan on Monday: Osaka is being embraced as Japanese despite her mixed background. National pride - at least for now - is overriding questions of cultural identity and what it means to be Japanese.

Williams' dramatic behavior during a chaotic final on Saturday, a hot topic in the United States and around the world, has been largely brushed aside in Japan with the focus on Osaka's poise under pressure.

Japan's largest newspaper, Yomiuri, called Osaka a new heroine that Japan is proud of and characterized her appeal as the contrast between her strength on the court and her innocent character off the court.

Yomiuri centered Osaka's photograph holding the U.S. Open trophy at the top of its Monday front page - as did the two other large dailies. In a headline inside the paper, Yomiuri called her an Overnight Queen - Powerful and Stable.

The Asahi newspaper also called her the New Queen, picking up on her mix of strength and gentleness.

None of the main-line newspapers dwelled too much on her background, which has been well reported. She was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, moved to the United States when she was 3 and now lives in Florida where she has trained for more than a decade.

In an interview Monday from New York on Japan's TBS television, she was asked what she wants to do now. She replied in Japanese: Have curried rice topped with a pork cutlet. Then she slipped into English and said: I am very honored. I don't know how to say that in Japanese.

She gave some of the same answers in a similar interview with Japan's NTV television.

She is such a lovable character, said Seiji Miyane, the NTV talk show host.

She smiled through the media pressure, which several newspapers have called a Japanese trait. Her broken Japanese works as an asset, apologizing occasionally for getting the wrong word - or not knowing the Japanese word at all.

She is not the type of person who asserts herself boldly, but she is shy and humble and that makes her look more like a Japanese, Junko Okamoto, a communications specialist, wrote in the weekly magazine Toyokeizai.

Okamoto also said Osaka could become a face of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, leading to big sponsorship deals.

Forbes magazine has reported that Williams is the highest earning female athlete with income of $18 million per year, almost all from endorsements. The Evening Fuji tabloid newspaper, citing Forbes, speculated wildly about Osaka's potential lifetime earnings. Its headline suggested she could earn $100 million.

The Mainichi, one of top three general circulation newspapers, noted that Osaka was wearing a dress at a victory celebration from a well-known Japanese designer.

Osaka's 73-year-old grandfather, Tetsuo Osaka, surfaced in several interviews from Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, where he heads a fishing cooperative. He said he plans to meet his granddaughter when she plays next week in a tournament in Japan.

Their relationship seems solid now, but the New York Times reported that for a more than a decade Naomi's mother, Tamaki, had little contact with her family in Japan.

Roland Kirishima, a photographer who is half Japanese and Scottish, criticized some internet comments questioning if Osaka is really Japanese, because of her darker skin color.

Look at the French soccer team that won the World Cup, he wrote on Twitter. Half of the players are immigrants' sons or multi-racial. I'm surprised many people in Japan are still obsessed with racial purity. It's 21st century already. Please overcome this type of insular prejudice.

It looks like Japan has taken at least a first step.

For those who are wondering why Naomi has never met her maternal relatives, it's 'cause some of her relatives in Japan questioned her mom's "wisdom" in marrying a Haitian-American.

I'm wondering why most of the developed countries in Asia haven't developed much in that regard. I get that theh basically did "jump" fron Feudalism to modern capitalism with few time, but after getting a lot of western influece, the social movements still haven't stick?

That's in part because a lot of historical Western influence was...not the best. Colonialism leaves a lot of baggage.

East Asia has kind of a weird and dysfunctional relationship with the West. The dysfunction is only matched by the relationship East Asian countries have with each other. I've described relations between the East Asian countries as "everyone hates everyone for entirely valid reasons" in these threads before. I stand by that.

Of course, this animosity is made complicated by the fact that despite the xenophobic macho nationalist posturing that just about every East Asian country engages in, we're all pretty dependent on each other economically. And we hate that.

Also, just about every country in East Asia has a culture that is big on tradition and filial piety and what not. Which means we're all pretty conservative in the "slow to adopt change" way.

Don't forget that a lot of East Asian history is rife with civil war and war between each other. And now we're all trying to play nice with barely veiled hostility, as if we weren't all trying our best to slaughter each other mere decades ago.

Latin America with money...and/or perhaps Europe before they learned their lesson and started to grudgingly get along and fight with bureaucracy instead?

Kinda strange, given that Asia was also thoroughly devastated by war, but if the political institutions aren't in place thanks to a combination of underdevelopment, colonialism, and bad luck...cooperation is trickier.
