No, I do not want the trope renamed. But none of the redirect are very descriptive. Can we get some to make the page more easy to find?

Unpopular Commander, Commander Non Grata, Hated By His Own Men... No clear idea.

Selfish Commander might also work.

I think the essential part is the bad rapport between The Neidermeyer and his/her underlings.

That's three. Redirects are free, right? Should we redirect Hated By His Own Men?

Of course, we keep looking for other redirects.

Well, maybe it just doesn't reflect very much his incompetence, but otherwise, I have no objection either.

Hmmm. I think that's not a requirement:

A commanding officer with a complete lack of respect between himself and the troops. Because of his demonstrated incompetence, cowardice, inexperience, willingness to sacrifice them for his own glory or to get promoted, or just being a psychotic level hard-ass, his authority is resented by the men in the trenches, and his orders are only obeyed because chain-of-command says so.

Emphasis mine. Incompetence is only one possible reason of the bad rapport.

Well, most examples seems to shows that he's really not fit to be in his position, being a Jerkass is just a second requirement (though the Laconic section seems to just show the fact that he's hated).

But as I've stated, I've got no problem with this.

Being unfit for the position would simply be Pointy-Haired Boss IMHO. The hatred is the key.

I was under the impression that the big deal is he is so much of a dickish glory-hog that it undermines his ability to be effective because there's low moral, he's doesn't explain anything, and he forces his men to do stupid, suicidal things in order to get recognition.

I'd suggest Colonel Fuckwit, but that'd violate our gratuitous swearing rules.

Colonel Load, Colonel Burden, Colonel Irritant all come to mind.

Should I add Colonel Irritant as a redirect then? Any other redirect in the proposed ones you feel appropriate?

I like Bastard Boss - it's not the same as Bad Boss or Pointy-Haired Boss, which are merely incompetent, but someone who actively makes his subordinates' lives a living hell.

I feel this needs renaming, the trope title is non indicative of the meaning at all, it requires familiarity with a certain film.

It only has 229 inbound, I'm sure it could do better with a better name.

It probably wasn't so useful to add "Colonel Irritant" as an alt-name. Alt-names are for searching. I doubt anyone is going to be searching for The Neidermeyer with the keyword "irritant". Or "Queeg". In the absence of a useful name, add a short clear laconic and ensure main text gives a good overview in the first paragraph.

(We've got both of those in this case.)

[up]

Just because it has a laconic and is explained doesn't mean that there should be no attempt to change a bad/non-descriptive name.

229 inbound is well above the norm. That's not a justification for renaming.

132 is the rudest number.

Wait I thought we were doing away with all the "The [name]" titles. Why don't we want this renamed now?
