Trump administration wants to end another Obama-era protection for transgender people

In this case, the Equal Access in Accordance With an Individual's Gender Identity in Community Planning and Development Programs which makes it so shelters which benefit from federal funding cannot discriminate based on transgender identity.

Record number of LGBTQ candidates running for office in US

https://apnews.com/bcce432bd9537a929b28efe579c19cbe

The number of openly LGBTQ elected officials in the United States has more than doubled in the past four years — and those ranks could soon grow, thanks to a record field of LGBTQ candidates this year, according to new data from an advocacy and research group.

The LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Out For America report, released Thursday, tallies 843 openly LGBTQ elected officials across all levels of government at present, up from 417 in June 2016. The institute says a record 850 LGBTQ people are running for office this year, including several candidates with strong chances of entering Congress.

Yet the institute’s president, former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, says that despite significant progress, LGBTQ people “continue to be severely underrepresented in every state and at every level of government.”

She said LGBTQ people make up about 4.5% of the U.S. adult population, yet hold only 0.17% of the more than 510,000 elected positions in the U.S., ranging from Congress and state legislatures to city councils and school boards. To achieve proportionate representation, Parker said, LGBTQ people would need to win more than 22,500 additional positions.

The Victory Institute data reveals a striking partisan divide. As of 2018, it counted 438 LGBTQ elected officials affiliated with the Democratic Party and only 16 Republicans. Among the LGBTQ candidates with solid chances of winning in November are several Democratic congressional contenders.

From there it goes into detail on a few specific people.

Making it illegal to murder us would be a good start. A lot of it will have to do with changing public perception and doing away with all the stereotypes and stigmas against us.

The third article does point out that one reason the rates seem to be rising is because they are actually being reported more often (as opposed to not being reported).

Dr. Rebecca Stotzer, a professor at University of Hawaii School of Social Work, told USA TODAY that although anti-transgender stigma does lead to transgender killings, the increase in homicides may be due in part to an increase in reporting by law enforcement to the federal government.

While the federal government created bias crimes as a reporting category in 1992, sexual orientation and gender identity hate crimes began to be investigated only in 2009.

Since then, reported crimes motivated by bias against transgender people have increased, and Stotzer believes "we're going to see the numbers consistently going up for the foreseeable future."

The issue seems to be that, due to a nasty combo of systemic racism and transphobia, a lot of transgender people of color don't have access to basic amenities and are (understandably) reluctant to come forward to the authorities when threatened with violence. As a result, they are extremely vulnerable in ways that most other people in society are not.

Okay, cool. Its still a violent time for Trans Wo C. Whether its going up or not, as the number is higher than "0" its still too high.

[up]The point is that it's always been that way. The main difference seems to be that more and more people are finally realizing that it shouldn't be that way.

I...I know. I know that already.

I guess...it almost is academic, whether or not the number is rising because of underreporting or increases in murders (or both). Because either way, the salient point is Jesus Christ Trans WOC are being murdered. You know?

[up]It's kind of like how the rate of sexual assaults and rapes being reported is increasing. It's not because the problem is getting worse. It's because more people are willing to acknowledge that there is a problem.

...Okay? I know that. Two people are still dead and the body count is rising. "Well actually, technically the number isn't going up because there are more murders, its just because the average is higher than recorded" isn't helpful or comforting, that just means the problem has been there and people were ignoring it. It doesn't make anything better.

I guess is what I'm trying to say. You know? Its cold comfort...

Another bit that stood out for me was this:

"Historically, transgender people have been portrayed as monstrous villains," Westbrook said. "We need to highlight the joy in transgender lives and celebrate transgender people. Too often, one only sees a transgender person in the news when they have been murdered."

I guess this highlights the need for better representation in media.

Also true. Transgender joy is great, and really doesn't get the love it should. It would also help with the consistent issue of television and media struggling to represent trans folks as people as opposed to having the personality "is trans" and nothing else to contribute to the plot.

Gay men hijacked the #ProudBoys hashtag to drown out the hate group with LGBTQ+ pride

The LGBTQ+ community, especially gay men, absolutely rekted white supremacists on Twitter when they took over the #Proud Boys hashtag.

Look up #Proud Boys on Twitter, and you’ll see a flurry of gay men celebrating love and community. The Being LGBTQ Podcast also posted an iconic group catwalk video with the caption, “#Proud Boys on route.” The viral strut video got nearly half a million views within 5 hours.

“Gay twitter has claimed the #Proud Boys hashtag from alt-righ white supremacists and filled it with images of love, positivity, and true PRIDE,” wrote user @jcrdandaly.

The hashtag is the namesake of the Proud Boys, a racist hate group that recently got a shout out from President Donald Trump during the first presidential debate.

The New York Times described the organization as a “far-right group of brawlers where punches are part of membership initiation. Its participants have espoused misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, and anti-immigrant views while making allies with white supremacists whom group leaders claim to disavow.”

Suffice to say, the Proud Boys are probably not too happy with this takeover. The reclaimed hashtag is now filled with men kissing, people reminiscing about pride celebrations, and lots of love and affection.

Even Democratic Rep. Carlos Smith, Florida’s first LGBTQ Latinx legislator, got in on the trend.

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.
