(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

I think Bercow also made a comment about how the government doesn't decide what's orderly.

That's interesting, are they citing a source?

EDIT: Ah, appears Boris called Tusk to say he'd be sending along a letter asking for an extension.

Boris, Boris, stick to one course of action for an evening.

Let's wait and see what actually happens, what the actual content is of any letters, and how many letters end up being sent.

Now I’m seeing reports of it being three letters, the extension request (Without Boris’ signature), a cover letter and a third letter from Bros that argues that no extension is needed.

Also according to Spiegel (not linking it cause its in German) the EU Parliament seems to have reached a bipartisan mood of 'No more negotation'. Which giveb that the EP also needs to agree to the final deal probably means it.

Though at this point nobody's trying to negotiate anything more we've entered the stage of trying to resolve this legal quagmire without the Brexiteers getting a no deal.

Also, arguing this complies with the law after everyone said it wouldn't... seems like we're having that court hearing after all.

Its probably because the EP has a distinct vision of Terror of sitting there in November with PM Torieface Mc Stupid who wants to 'negotiate' a 'better deal'

Hm. Looks like the extension request is an unsigned letter — Boris has refused to send it. And it's accompanied by a signed second letter saying that accepting an extension would be a mistake.

The second letter is definitely contempt of court because it classifies as frustrating the Benn Act. However, the issue is the unsigned letter. They're obviously hoping that lack of signature means the EU cannot accept it as a legal request for extension, but that they've done enough to meet the requirements of the Benn Act without actually asking for an extension.

I think the lawyers on Monday are going to be on the war path.

Apparently it wasn’t even a letter, it was a photocopy of the Benn Act that got sent. Regardless it’s enough, Tusk has tweeted “ The extension request has just arrived. I will now start consulting EU leaders on how to react.”, so they’re taking it as valid.

Tusk's not stupid. He's not having Boris' attempt to be Diet Trump. That said, the EU is still running out of sympathy for the UK.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

[up][up]

Yes, the three 'letters' he sent were:

  • An unsigned copy of the Benn Act's letter write-up.
  • A second letter stating the first letter is from parliament, not the government.
  • A third letter telling the EU not to grant an extension because he doesn't support it.

Note: for those that don't know, the Benn Act included a draft of the letter that should be sent — the Opposition trusted Boris Johnson so little that they felt they had to write the actual letter that needs to be sent and enshrine it in law.

We're well aware.

At this point I'd expect the EU leaders to carefully consider their options and ask for reassurances that there are either reelections or a second referendum that solve this issue one way or another. Simply extending this farce would be the worst thing they could do.

[up][up] Well, the point of the Letwin Amendment is highly specific: no approving a withdrawal bill until the relevant legislation is studied and passed. It's possible that at that point the rebels may fall in line and agree with it. Of course, a second set of rebellions—up to and including the DUP now—may demand a second referendum as a rider pitting the deal against Remain.

But either needs more than a week and a half, which I suppose is the main point.

Arguably at this stage the extensions are for more concrete reasons than they've ever been—not "more negotiation". Deadline pressures. That and the Brexiteers have gotten in line behind this latest idiocy.

The problem with the letter is that I think the extension built into it is for the 31st January, which isn't enough time for a referendum and is barely enough time for a GE. So, if either of those two options end up becoming the way forward, a further extension will be needed.

That essentially means that the EU, if they're going to grant any extension at all, should probably take the position that this will be the last extension they grant and the only way they will grant one after January will be for the sole purpose of a referendum and nothing else.

That, or they insist it has to be a longer extension instead of only to January to cover that, which we know Johnson will not agree to.

If Johnson refuses to agree, Parliament can force him to agree (again).

Also he's insisting he has the numbers to get the deal through this week.

If that's true then why all the wailing and gnashing of teeth last night?

I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to bribe Hungary in one way or another so that Orban puts a veto against further extension.
