Currently, the trope proper is Driving Game, and Racing Game is a redirect. The problem here is that not all driving games are racing games.

Battle Tanx is on the page, and it is not a racing game. It is however, about driving, so it fits driving game. Twisted Metal, WWE Crush Hour, or Driver are also about driving and belong on the page, but are not in the same category as Gran Turismo or Mario Kart. Finally, not all racing games are about driving. Banjo Pilot, for example, is about flying planes, and other racing games featured no vehicles and just had people running on foot.(I can't recall the name right now). Charge involves riding cows, racing but not driving. I make a motion for a split in the pages.

Hmm. Interesting. I agree that Racing Games shouldn't be lumped in with Driving Games, but I'm not sure that Driving Games shouldn't be lumped in with something else, like Simulation maybe.

I think I see the merit of splitting things like Crazy Taxi from things like Mario Kart. At least a soft split on the page would work.

Cider, those count as vehicular combat. It's all the same: you drive stuff, it's just that you drive stuff differently.

In favor of a soft-split, if not keeping as-is.

The controls are usually similar enough, with such things as breaks, and the physics with such things as tires, you just are not driving with a different goal in mind. Contrasting when you race in say, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, there is a driving course but most races are done on foot Gourmet Race from Kirby, also on foot, or that track and field game on the HD twins, no driving there.

Well, I think some sort of split is appropriate, although I dunno about the specifics.

This has been here for a while, though not many people have voice an opinion. Any more arguments? Should we go ahead and put up a page action crowner?

There is now a page action crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add options as you see fit.

Personally, I think a hard split makes sense, if only because of the point Cider made about some racing games not even involving driving at all. I think it is a bit strange to have Driving Game as a redirect for Racing Game given that fact.

On a somewhat related note, would anyone be opposed to me taking Mascot Racer to YKTTW as a subtrope for Driving Game, Racing Game, or whatever happens to come out of this thread? Mascot Racer is currently a redirect for Mascot Fighter, but the latter's description seems to indicate that it is just about fighting. If this is outside the bounds of this thread, feel free to say so though.

Well, I wouldn't mind a soft split the way Animal Mecha has one, but then it might be better off renamed Driving-And-Racing-Games, if only because redirects are not on the top of the page anymore so someone who clicks on Track and Field and gets "driving" wouldn't be confused.

As for mascot racer? I don't know any, except for Sonic and Sega Allstar racing and Star Wars Super Bombad Racing, the latter really stretches "mascot" but it does have Darth Vader and the Death Star amongst Episode One characters(including Akankin). It might be too rare to trope, so I'd stick the examples on Crossover unless there was a disproportionally large amount of racing game crossovers.

Cider,

The soft split with a rename to Driving-And-Racing-Games is now an option on the crowner.

As for the other point, you may be right. I think it might be worth taking Mascot Racer to YKTTW just in case there are some more examples though. Kart Racer is also a trope that I think might be worth making, but I suppose that is outside the bounds of the current discussion.

Mascot Racer might be a good trope for things like Jak X and well most Kart Racing type games like Mario Kart.

Are there any examples of Driving Games that aren't Racing Games? A straight rename might be in order, rather than a split.

Thinking about it more, a soft split and rename would be less work, not a whole lot would have to be changed on the page and not many wicks would need correcting. I think that's what should be done more now.

Personally, I'd go with separate Vehicular Combat and Racing pages. The former can include either sub pages or folders by type of vehicle (airplane, boat, car, etc) and the second can be split up by the type of race. In addition, there could be a separate "Mascot" page, including examples of any game that features mascots (i.e. Mario Kart, Brawl, etc).

The crowner seems to be favouring a hard split so far...

I'd prefer a soft split and rename unless someone can name a large number of racing games that don't involve driving. True, they do exist, but I can't name many. I can name a large number of driving games that are not racing games. Still, a split or rename should be done either way because the title isn't accurate right now.

Indirect Active Transport,

I think the issue is more that there are Driving Games that are not Racing Games than vice-versa. However, I feel like pretty much any racing game that uses planes (e.g., Banjo Pilot or Freaky Flyers) or anything that does not use cars or karts (e.g., Running Wild) would not seem to fit the name Driving Games very well. I am not sure how common those types of games really are, but given that making another index for racing games would not be too difficult, I think it is a reasonable thing to do.

That being said, I am not sure that this is really that important, so I would probably be fine with whatever decision is reached here.

On a somewhat related note, I made a YKTTW similar to the one I discussed earlier in this thread here. I hope it is alright to link to it here.

Personally I prefer soft split-rename to hard split-two new pages. But the voters would seem to disagree with me, lets call this crowner and close the thread.

Calling the crowner after 18 days, with a final tally of 8 (yeas:10 nays:2) 5.00 : 1 in favor of making a Hard Split between Racing Game from Driving Game. Next nearest option was at 0, 5-5.

Why would that lock and delete it? I just want Racing Game removed as a redirect. Until that's done we can't make a separate page.
