Bread and Circuses has a problematic Real Life section. It's yet another of the hot button political topics that's going to bring everyone out of the woodwork to complain about stuff. Not to mention the natter it attracts — I sent a natter PM about an entry this morning and got an angry response that we should just delete the section, and looking at it, I agree.

I would like to eliminate the section entirely and put a No Real Life Examples notification on the page. I just don't see how we can keep it neutral when we're accusing countries of being repressive dictatorships.

Support. The only example I think might be worth keeping is the "Ancient Rome" one. You might make it workable if you implement a "thousand years or older" rule.

Fight smart, not fair.

Hmm, I'm also going to take a grammar comb to the description. It's got an Uncanny Valley feel to it - not quite right.

Sheeit. Ax the Real Life section, Put "Ancient Rome" up at the top in a "Trope Namer" folder and flag it as "No Real Life Examples on pain of banning."

Rome is mentioned in the description, so I'm not sure it also needs a section all to itself (though if there's going to be a Real Life section it might as well mention it).

On the other hand, if that Stalin quote is real, that's probably worth mentioning.

On the gripping hand, googling for it turns up that page and a few random blogs, so it probably isn't real unless there's some better translation of it out there.

Definitely supporting an axing of the Real Life section. So much of it seems to be Complaining About Governments You Don't Like.

Or in the case of Singapore, gushing about governments you like.

Removed the Real Life section, created Trope Name folder, and just spruced the rest of the page up. I do feel my Brave New World example is fairly poor, so feel free to take a shot at it.

I did that writing pass on the description, fixing some of the awkward wording. Think we can lock this.
