I guess it must be a supertrope? Huh.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Going from the trope descriptions, it looks like Instant Expert originally dealt with skills and powers, while Possession Implies Mastery originally dealt with technology. If I recall correctly, the earliest examples of Possession Implies Mastery usually dealt with mecha and like.
Over time, they both probably decayed to include things like mundane weaponry, so it's not surprising that the examples now overlap. Then we have examples like Shirou from Fate/stayNight (who is contrasted with Gilgamesh, no less), and suddenly it's not so clear where one ends and the other begins.
Worse yet, Possession Implies Mastery describes a fan fallacy in its description, but all its examples are in-universe! Is it supposed to be about how fans think characters always completely understand the technology they use, or is it about how well characters in-universe understand their technology?
That's probably the first step. Personally, I would use Possession Implies Mastery as a trope pertaining to how well characters can manipulate technology beyond basic usage (the repair, maintenance, and replication thereof) and a description rewrite so it isn't implied to be a trope about fan reactions. Then the examples that don't fit with that can be cleaned and merged with Instant Expert.

- Mega Manning is specifically "Learning an attack or fighting style by watching it a few times, or in some cases, just once."
- Possession Implies Mastery is specifically "Owning a piece of technology indicates that the person completely understands the workings of it, and can, if necessary, build one themselves."
- Instant Expert is "If you acquire a power or ability you didn't previously have you will be able to use it properly and effectively without any sort of training."
They're all related, but they aren't the same.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Mega Manning required defeating your opponent last time I heard it defined.
Fight smart, not fair.Instant Expert was originally about learned skills. IE - a person who after a Training Montage goes from never having practiced martial arts to becoming the Greatest Martial Artist of All Time (TM).
Doesn't look like there's any reason to leave this open.

Other links:I've been reading that article, Instant Expert, and I noticed is pretty much Possession Implies Mastery. All the examples are least, could be swaped from one to the other without making any kind of harm.
The main difference seem to be that most examples on Instant Expert include the idea of learning an skill by looking at it, but that's what the trope Mega Manning is for.
Any ideas regarding this?
