[up] I think the reason why so many people were (and some still are) scared of him is because of how weird he looks. When you dig into Gabor's other work however (the original Simpsons shorts, for example), it makes sense.

But I had a similar experience, too. 1st I was scared of him, then he grew on me.

And technically he was gone, but that was only for Rugrats Go Wild (they used that rooster thing).

[up] No, Splaat made a more "prominent" return last July in the form of a company official web series on Facebook and Instagram, voiced by Greg Cipes.

They've been trying to use him for years - since the beginning of the last decade. Many years ago, when I happened to be in L.A., I discovered the Klasky-Csupo building on Highland Avenue, somehow still there despite the fact the company wasn't what it had once been. (Nobody was there at all.)

It was such a surreal thing to see that famous logo right on the front of the building. What exactly they were trying to do with him, I have no idea.

[up][up] yes, I am aware of the web series, the poster above me said that he was never gone, just became silent for a while. After they switched to him in 1998, they used him for the rest of show, with the exception of that movie.

Again, though, I don't think he was ever dropped at all. They still used him as a mascot in some capacity, even though I remember a time where they didn't use his iconic ident.

I'm on the first episode, and I like what I see so far; the animation style is better in motion than in stills. The adults' new voices are definitely reminiscent of the wrong-sounding Muppets, though I suppose I'll get used to them in time.

Did they butcher Grandpa Lou too much? The Rugrats wiki literally describes his new incarnation as "he's a hippie and uses dating apps", which sounds like We Are Still Relevant Dammit taken to extremes.

I stumbled across a pretty decent review of the first 5 episodes by Jordan Fringe.

  • Generally, he finds the show one of the better examples of a series revival/reboot, though to a fault when it retreads old ground. (8:56)

  • The parents' new voice actors sound "off", playing into their additional tropes. (Notably Chaz) (1:52)
    • Jordan does like the "hippie-leaning" Grandpa Lou in this incarnation, being a highlight. (2:12)
  • The transition to an All-CGI Cartoon, compared to Kamp Koral, is very effective. From the character animation, to the models themselves, Jordan finds them easy to adjust to. (3:25)
    • The series even embraces the surreal imagery of the Imagine Spots. (6:05)
  • The babies still get into Free-Range Children adventures (first episode has the gang drive in Angelica's convertible in a busy street, nearly getting hit by a truck), and Fantasy Sequences.(4:32)
  • The parents, in spite of the vocal changes, are surprising fleshed out in their B-Plots. (6:53)

So something's been on my mind for a while. It's been ages since I've watched the original show, so I've forgotten if this was actually a thing or if I just imagined it.

Was Angelica written to be more articulate when she was speaking only to the babies? And written to use simpler, choppier sentences when speaking to the parents? To represent that her adult language skills were still developing.

[up]She doesn't really change her vocabulary. She still uses "ladies and germs", "gift from a bob", and the like.

She was kind of articulate in the earlier episodes, I think it's when Paul Germain left, they dumbed down the kids' dialogue (allegedly the creators complained they were starting to sound too much like adults).

Truthfully Angelica always talked more like a six-eight year old to the adults anyway. Cartoon children always seem more precocious.

So they've aged Kimi up and made her a rival for Angelica instead of Chuckie's step sister?

Not sure what to make of that, might work, but it felt like the large point of Kimi was her being a Red Oni baby sister for Chuckie, thus there goes that bit of Character Development.

Also Boris and Minka confirmed to be returning, not sure what tweaks they'll get, but at least they're confirmed to still be Tommy's grandparents.

Charlet Chung mentioned how, when she was younger, she felt a particular attachment to Kimi when watching the original series, seeing herself in her. She was naturally ecstatic at voicing her in the new series.

Am I the only one who thinks the tables have turned regarding Rugrats, and Sponge Bob? Sponge Bob had the world at the palm of it's hands in the 2000s. It was critically acclaimed for it's clever wordplay, intelligent writing, and it's ubiquitous appeal towards kids, and adults. It would go onto be, other than Family Guy, the most successful cartoon of the decade. At the same time, Rugrats' momentum had been derailed by the mid 2000s, with many people getting tired of the show's exposure, thinking it had jumped the shark, ratings had declined, and it's reputation was in decline, as it had garnered a name for itself as being a "show for babies". While there were some complaints about the show's decline after the movie, they were mostly few and far between, and they didn't receive the backlash later Rugrats did.

But by the 2010s, people went from mildly criticising Sponge Bob, to beginning to have fatigue of it. With the show coming under fire for it's Flanderization, cliche, and mean spirited plots, and heavy exposure. By that point, many cartoon reviewers had devoted entire videos to talking about how problematic the new episodes are. To an even bigger extent than people ever did with Rugrats. Where Rugrats not only had a big renaissance in the 2010s, but the later episodes that were once maligned were now praised, and the show was appreciated on a larger scale than before, gaining a huge cult following, and it was so popular that DVD, and merchandise sales sold like hotcakes, and when a reboot was announced in 2018, it was met with mostly excitement.

However, after Hillenburg's passing, and the subsequent spinoff controversy, full blown fatigue kicked in, and there were stronger calls to end Sponge Bob than ever before. Even as the Rugrats reboot premiered, and people's opinions of it were split down the middle, it hasn't received the online vitrol that modern Sponge Bob gets, and was successful enough to have outperformed Kamp Koral, and the first episode's premiere, in conjunction with the promotional shorts got pretty high ratings when they premiered on Nick. So, is it just me, or does it seem like the tables have switched, despite Sponge Bob being an overall bigger success than Rugrats?

Season 2 is dropping on April 14th, with a new trailer teasing the arrival of Dil Pickles.

In the second season of RUGRATS, the babies are back and ready to take on the world with their pint-sized perspectives and a diapie full of snacks. New episodes follow Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, Phil, and Lil as they cross the frozen tundra, discover the treasures of ancient babies, and go on the greatest adventure of all: meeting Tommy’s new brother!

Returning to the playpen is Tommy’s beloved little brother, Dil, voiced by Tara Strong (Teen Titans Go!) who is reprising her role in this new series. Also joining the series this season are guest stars Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) as Miss Mellie, the friendly and silly tour guide at re-created Old West town Tot Springs; Wendie Malick (The Owl House) as Judith, Charlotte’s glamorous yet often condescending mother; Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso) as Nanny Pip, a proficient and encouraging robotic nanny who watches Angelica; and Alia Shawkat (Severance) as Trish, Betty’s new girlfriend who is eager to make friends with everyone.
