Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Not that he can make a deal with Gwen going by what he said to Otto in the recent Superior Spider-Man book or anyone not from 616.

But are we sure that was the real Mephisto? The real one has been deposed from hell during Damnation, and he's now a prisoner in a luxury hotel in Las Vegas (I'm not making this up!). Then, somehow, he made this deal with Superior Spider-Man (and many others). Mephisto has recently been taken out of his cell by Ghost Rider, and in Ghost Rider #5 we can find this.

[up] In Valkyrie, Mephisto also says that being trapped in Vegas isn't stopping him from showing up elsewhere. "What, I'm Mephisto? They think I can't find loopholes?"

Can we talk that no 15-year-old actually looks 15-years-old in the old comics? And by old, I mean from the 60s to somewhere before the new 10s.

Does anyone believe that Matt Franklin and Mayday are 15 when they started?

In Amazing Mary Jane today, it seems keeping her away from Peter is the status quo of the book. Peter makes a cameo appearance in the issue waiting on MJ at a fancy restaurant, but MJ, having witnessed a murder by Oni Mask, decides she doesn't want Peter becoming her personal shield and getting hurt so after she calls the cops, she flies off in a helicopter to Montanna

[up]That's a basic requirement for as long as we'll have a Mary Jane comic book. If we had both of them together, in this comic, Peter would become a Spotlight-Stealing Squad.

Just re-read the issue (I have a bad habit of speed-reading) it's not that MJ wants to keep Peter in the dark, it's just she lost her phone back at the TV Studio and the cops were who shipped her to Montana as part of witness protection...all before she had a chance to phone Peter and let him know she was going into protection

Marvel's June solicitations

Lily Holister returns in Black Cat's pages, MJ's montanna adventure continues, Miles fights a clone, Jessica heads back to the source of her powers, Peter heads over to Ravencroft, and the Empyre Spider-Man tie-in will "change aspects" of his and MJ's relationship...just as this is coming out

Jessica heads back to the source of her powers

Ricocheting off of that, Spider-Woman #1 ended with her spewing bubbling green acid venom out of every orifice in her head, so she seems to be off to a great new start.

No, she's had various origins, though:

  • Originally, she was supposed to be an evolved spider, but they nixed that after the editors nixed Wolverine being an actually evolved wolverine, too. It's weird and nobody really likes it.
  • Then her first origin involved being poisoned by uranium and her father saving her with an experimental serum derived by an irradiated spider. She is also placed in a "genetic accelerator," which, ironically, decelerates her aging, meaning that after a few decades, she's only 17 when she gets out. It's weird and nobody really likes it.
  • Then Brian Michael Bendis wrote Spider-Woman: Origin where this origin was retconned to where Jessica was hit, while in the womb, with a "laser beam containing the DNA traits of several different species of spiders" (whatever that means). It's weird and nobody really likes it, but nobody cared enough to change it, so that's her origin now.

Since Ravencroft is run by Norman at the moment, and the place features in the June issues of Amazing Spider-Man, do you think ASM#850 (legacy) will be another Peter and Goblin showdown?

So Kindred is seemingly more and more likely either Gwen Stacy or Harry.

If it's a three faction match i'd be hyped either way.

[up]x6 Spider-Woman is kinda a strange character in general. She was originally only intended to be a one off, meant to establish a trademark over the name, and when her debut became a surprise hit, they were left with a character no one had any idea what to do with.

Even her first solo book is all over the place, not helped the constantly changing writers. No one really knew what to do with her, so she goes from hydra agent, antihero, and bounty hunter, before eventually settling as a private investigator.

The first 20 or so issues do have Carmine Infantino on pencils, so that’s always a treat, but I’d say that we really only start to see the modern version of the character take shape once Claremont takes over in issue #34. He moves her from LA to San Francisco to become a private detective, and really starts to flesh out her character. (Although Issue #33 by De Mattis is a lot of fun, since it features the amazingness that is “Turner D Century”.)

The first third or so of her series had a kind of weird occult horror-ish vibe that I kind of liked.

Byrne sort of tried to revisit that with Mattie's series.

Amazing Spider-Man#42

...Or should that be Amazing Gog? Outside of a couple of pages, Peter and Boomerang take a back seat entriely so the issue can spend time fleshing out Gog's backstory and how he came to protect the remnants of the Life Stone (or "Tslin" as it's known in his dimension). We see how Gog befriended a small alien boy and was raised by him...until his planet came under attack and the family were forced to evacuate. Gog is seperated from the boy, and winds up on Earth where he's found by Kraven, from there we get flashbacks to his classic apperances, including his stint on the Sinister Six and what happened to him afterwards. He is returned to his dimension by Reed Richards and winds up in the middle of a war, where he reunites with the boy he was raised by,...but he is just as swiftly killed in an explosion. The boy's mother reveals she had thought the Tslin was a gift with which she could use to take the power back to her people, but now believes it has brought nothing but death. She smashes it into pieces and tells Gog to take the fragments back to Earth and look over a vital portion

So... the Loki-A-Rune he got in the issue 504 ASM (1963)...

Did the writers forget about it or it got a cameo? Because I miss that thing, along with the Slingers costumes on Peter.
